This game is buggy as all hell.
When this game is patched by the developers, it is inadvertantly broken as well.
This game's players are relying on modders to fix the glitches before Bethesda do.

And yet this game has a HUGE fan base.

WHY?! Why do we still play your games Bethesda?! Seriously, only Bethesda can get away with something like this. Then again, their games are SO good that people are willing to overlook transgressions so serious that they would otherwise cripple any other dev studio.
I have a better question: why is Bethesda given free reign on this while Obsidian gets blasted for it?
Because Obsidian is fun to beat up on. Also NWN2 (trollface.jpeg)

I see your point though. From a personal standpoint, I thought KOTOR2 and Fallout: NV were far superior products to the Bioware and Bethesda originals, and even Alpha Protocol wasn't particularly buggy for me when I played it.

I wonder if Todd Howard bathes in the tears of those who play a Bethesda game and suddenly something went wacky or bugged and then they cry on the internet or to forums and such..............prolly good for the skin...

OnTopic: Creation Kit? Sweet means the wikia wont be so halfass and they can find all the amusing stuff like removed dialogue and perhaps a hint towards a DLC? Can dream.

Ugh! Typical Bethesda! Promising it will be released just after game release, then saying it's a week after, then saying's it's around Thanks Giving, now saying sometime in January!! Next it will be "Some time in 2013".

I put faith in Bethesda not to do this again, I trusted them to be honest here! I'm sorry, I was foolish to believe Bethesda could keep their word.

If they were smart, they'd work entirely on releasing the Creation Kit! Once it comes out, they will NEVER have to worry about fixing PC glitches EVER again! On top of that, the Mod Community would fix things a hundred times faster than they would.

At this point, I'm not holding my breath. We'll be lucky if we get the Creation Kit by July at this rate.

So this will make it easy to download and implement mods? I have a good pc but I've stayed away from them because of all the computer tech stuff I'd have to do to use them, usually involving save files and stuff.

looks like January is when i get the game when modders start to make it a PC game and not a console port
if the only reason you've been abstaining from buying Skyrim is because it's a console port, then you should really reconsider and get it. It's not as bad as some people have been saying. Yes the UI is very console optimized, but it does still work fine on PC once you get used to it, and IMO doesn't detract from the gameplay very much IMO. Also there's already a mod that replaces the inventory with a better, more detailed one. It's still a WIP and has some kinks, but it takes away from that console port feel quite a bit.

Link to said mod: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=667

Skyrim really is a great game, despite its flaws.

I'm in the same boat, but modding is surprisingly easy. Google Nexus Mod Manager, download, set the folder as where your skyrim folder is, then using Skyrimnexus.com, just click on download with manager and you can mod no problem.

Once you try it, to put it down is a crime against humanity.

They better not limit modders to publishing through this Steam-arse - I grudgingly accept Steam on my system because of the value they offer, and because I often don't have a choice, but I install my games where I choose, and whenever possible I run them without booting up Steam itself.
Steam is very good to modders. You can still distribute the mod elsewhere, but you can also choose to do so through Steam. They've done this for Half-Life 1 and 2 mods, and it works rather well.

In the past six months they haven't said anything about releasing the Creation Kit within a week of launch. They've stated that there will be one. They then made an announcement on the forums on release day that it is indeed coming, without giving us a date.

This is the FIRST time they've given us an actual timeframe on the Creation Kit, so I really don't see the problem here.

We bash Bethesda for the bugs just as much as we do Obsidian. Many (most) games today don't even let you mod it, so if it's a buggy mess, then you HAVE to rely on the developers to fix it. Bethesda has ALWAYS allowed us to mod the game to our liking. Beyond that, Bethesda still releases patches to correct any major bugs... OH NOES DRAGONS FLYING BACKWARDS, it's the end of the world! Oh wait, no it isn't, since a hotfix has been released.

Furthermore, you have absolutely no idea how ridiculously huge the game is in terms of content. I'm 80 hours in, and I've maybe done just over half the quests available (not counting the dynamically generated quests). It would take a ridiculous amount of time and money to iron out all the bugs in games of this scope. It's so incredibly rare to see large scale games get released in a bugless state. Sure, maybe they could do more to release a more stable game, but no developer is perfect. Blizzard makes a few decisions that a lot of us don't like (Lack of LAN play, Real-Money auction house, etc...). Valve takes a long time to release their games.

I've had a few buggy moments in Skyrim, so I'll list a few.

-Killing one dragon didn't give me a soul for some reason, big whoop. I have too many souls to spend at this point. (Fixed in patch)
-Game title crashes to desktop after extended periods of play (usually around 4-5 hours). This isn't that big an issue for me since the game's save system ensures you never lose more than ~15 minutes worth of gameplay.
-Ragdolls go crazy sometimes. Who fucking cares!
-You might have to position yourself in a weird way to loot some corpses. I think it happened only once where a corpse was completely unlootable.

There's that thieves guild issue on 360, doesn't affect me but whatever. One or two questlines might be broken, at this point it doesn't matter because there's so much other shit to do in the game. Bethesda does fix these major issues.

To conclude I'd like to say that yes, we look past most of these issues because the game is simply that good. We will go back and play it come patch time to check out any fixed issues and enjoy more of Skyrim. I sensed some sarcasm in your post, though but hey you did actually answer your on question anyways.

Mod's aren't that tough to figure out, and this is coming from a mainly console gamer who generally sucks at computers. It usually just involves finding a certain folder (which is often the same for every Mod of the same game) and just pasting the stuff in there. But I definitely agree, the Steam Mod implementation will take away some potential headache.

Too bad I can't actually play Skyrim on PC.

Well it is a well known fact that most of the big modders for Bethesda games hang out at the Nexus anyways, and considering that Skyrim Nexus has been up for god knows how fucking long I suspect most files will end up there anyways.

i was reading a an article wrote by a modder that one of the earliest mods released that made the game more stable and allowed more ram usage was not only broken and unfixable by a patch. its still not officially implemented yet in one
No, you can still fix it through a loader/injector. The original .exe patch doesn't work anymore. They just need to make tweaks to the game's memory management to fix that issue, though.

I won't have a problem with Steam distribution of my mods so long as there is no censoring of the mods. Period. If I make a mod where you can literally rape, pillage and plunder all of Skyrim, then flag it as "Inappropriate content" or something, don't get rid of it. Otherwise, PES is where my mods will stay, because it's too much trouble for me to put my mods on 2 sites.

The post also outlined the plan for future bug fixes and kinda-sort explains/apologizes for the bugs in Patch 1.2. "We'll be releasing an incremental update next week. We anticipate it will be up on PC first, and then hit PS3 and Xbox 360 later in the week. Among other things, the update will fix issues like magic resistance not calculating properly and the rare, amazing backwards flying dragon," the post read. "We've also realized that with the millions upon millions of people playing Skyrim, we need to treat our updates with greater care. If we get too aggressive trying to fix a minor issue, we run a risk of breaking something larger in a game like this."

PC players take heart, Bethesda will be rolling updates out to you much faster than your console brethren. "We'll be releasing an incremental update next week. We anticipate it will be up on PC first, and then hit PS3 and Xbox 360 later in the week. Overall, you should expect updates to be hitting the PC and Steam earlier and more often, as that's a process we control. Console updates will follow, as they must be certified and processed by those manufacturers."
Erm, repeating yourself a bit there Greg :p

Anyway, I'm definitely liking the sound of that steam integration.

"Additionally, the PC interface was a stop-gap intended to ensure a simultaneous release on all platforms, and will be completely replaced with a coming patch."

Right, Bethesda? Right?

It actually sounds like a really good way to combat piracy. One of the main boons of the PC releases of Beth's games is the modding scene; if a clean, easy system of mod distribution is available only through the paid product, I think it'd go a long way toward getting people to buy. I don't know whether it's intentional or not, but if it is, this is exactly the sort of anti-piracy measure companies ought to be using.

On one hand it seems damn nifty to get mods directly through Steam.

On the other hand...
THROUGH STEAM.

I'm just afraid that there will be no 'inappropriate content' allowed. This really doesn't affect me all that much since I unfortunately had to get Skyrim for the Xbox360 and I'm not interested in nude mods etc. But here's the thing. Look at mod sites such as Elder Scrolls Nexus and you can see that there is a lot of nude mods, sex mods and whatever. Is that going to be allowed on steamworks? Or will they be prohibited? Then you gotta use other sites and might just as well stick with that.
