So is it possible to obtain Grand Master proficiency in unarmed combat if you play a Monk?

This is sounding more like NetHack as we go on. All I need is that hardcore mode, and possibly a procedurally-generated dungeon or three... Come on, Bethesda, I'm begging you! I don't care that you're charging $60; if you add a hardcore mode I will preorder as soon as I can, I promise.

Question: How does unarmed fit in to this?
You start out with sillyslaps then work your way up to Indian burn.

Seems as roughly effective as I've found unarmed to be in vanilla Oblivion.

So now axes won't be blunt weapons?

Good, because the idea of killing people with a blunt axe just sounds... well lets just say it sounds unpleasant.
Axes are considered blunt because you hit someone with it in the same way you would hit them with a mace.

The article said "combat styles like one-handed, two-handed, or archery...". Those were just examples, and I'm guessing unarmed will be it's own.

anc[is]I noticed you made no mention of dual wielding. This makes me a sad panda
Dual wielding has been confirmed I believe.

I'll still only use long swords anyway so meh. No difference.

Silver longswords are sexy with that high resolution blood on them man.

It sounds great to me, the way weapon skills were handled in the previous games made it really easy to exploit the system, hopefully the perk trees will be better balanced and allow more variety :)

Reminds me of Mount&Blade. You level up 1-handed, 2-handed, Bows, Crossbows, and Polearms separately. Leveling up with a 1 handed sword will increase your skill with a 1 handed mace.

My dream of an Elder Scrolls with M&B's combat engine may be getting closer to being a reality.

I'd have it branch between power and finesse, either going balls out and beating the shit out of whatever as fast as possible or having flashy stuff like dodging and disarm. Pure speculation on my part.

I approve of this, it makes sense.

SPEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAARSSS! i miss them so much :(

OT: Sounds interesting, but I too am interested in how unarmed might fit into this. Maybe you can get perks specialising in defense, speed and stuff like that? It's what they did for unarmed classes in NWN for example; give them advantages to outweigh the fact that they had no weapons that did any damage (initially).

I miss the crossbows. :/

OT: This sounds a hell of a lot better than the skill leveling system in Oblivion. Granted, hitting something with a sword a couple hundred times to get better at it makes some sort of sense, but it was just incredibly tedious and boring.

Honestly, if they're going this route, then maybe they'll give you experience like Fallout does, from the creatures you kill and the quests you complete, not how many times to slash your sword at an imp.

Sorry. I just loved Morrowind and was disappointed when Oblivion took all those things out.

Also, I'm still looking for a damn Colovian Fur Helm. I've only been searching for five years, there has to be one out there...

QFT

I play Morrowind for the sole purpose of getting the Daedric spear are level 2 or 3 from the ebony mine quest and then just screwing around, because spears are fucking awesome.

Seriously Bethesda, spears are badass. And remember to include an animation where you impale someone.

Edit: Also I want a perk for spears called 'Harpooner' where you throw your spear at a dragon, get stuck in it, then climb up the spear onto it's back and keep stabbing it. And IT WOULD BE AWESOME.

If they're not going to include them right away, at least put them in DLC or something. Argonian/spear combo was fantastic.
Also did you have Bloodmoon? Because Hircine's spear was the bomb.
