Does it really need steam...because if so what about modding? Can't add mods to a steam copy can you?

Also It seems my laptop could play it...just about.
Yes, yes you can, just like you could add mods to the steam version of morrowind and oblivion.

OT: I do wonder what the ultra specs are like, would be nice to know if I can handle that also.

You can mod steam games no problem.

Anyways, these specs are no problem at all, 11.11.11 can't come fast enough!

"DirectX 9.0c video card with 512 MB RAM"

Probably a very stupid question, but would a Nvidia 8600 qualify for that? My knowledge on graphics card is minimal at best, but I dont really care that much about graphics to begin with, as long as the gameplay is functional.
sadly it is not

i am not huge on nvidia cards, but your card is merely 256, and you need the next step up at 512 mb

if you are interested in upgrading it is a simple fix honestly, most 512 mb or 1 GB video card's are dirt cheap to get now a days

for nvidia, since that is probably what is most compatible with your system, i'd recommend this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500202

it's a "cheaper" upgrade that will still last you for a couple years probably.

You can add mods to steam copies. At least you're able to on steam copies of Fallout 3/NV, Morrowind and Oblivion. Bethesda's games on PC tend to have a giant modding community and they tend to either come with a modding utility or there is a modding utility on the official game site. So chances are high that mods will be an option.

Thanks for the response, but I think I'll just grab it on the ol' 360, anyway. I was leaning that way to begin with, but I've never been a big fan of mods, so that Pro of the PC is out for me.

The system requirements for the PC version of Skyrim turn out to be surprisingly gentle.

Since when was Bethesda known for making games with high system requirements?

As someone who wished they knew more about specs than they do, I have a couple of questions.

My video card is a Radeon HD 6570M/5700 series, does that mean it counts as a Radeon 6570? Or a Radeon 5700?

Also, I am using an i7 processor (eight cores) at 1.6GHz

I notice that is under the minimum for Ghz, but I am well over the recommended for number of cores, does my high core count compensate for the low Ghz? And if so, by how much? Obviously there isn't some conversion formula I can plug this shit into, but it would be nice to know where I can consider my processor to fall on the scale.

ever have any questions about upgrading or the likes i'd be more than happy to help.

also OT: i can't wait to check out some of the sweet mods that will be in skyrim =]

(such as having your own dragon...silly bethesda, saying they will all be mean ones!)

I'm glad that the system requirements are quite low. The guys with awesome rigs can still download graphics mods, but the vast majority of us can still play a nice looking game with the luxury of a mouse and keyboard.

DX9, really? Man I'm all for wellwritten engines that go a bit easy on your hardware but this seems a little too gentle. Come on, it's an Elder Scrolls game, it's supposed to bend your pc over and skip the lubricant.

Well I think I'll be able to do the minimum requirements I guess...

I think I'll just wait awhile until I can get a better computer, the price will have dropped by then anyway.

I have never played a game on PC but I want to for Skyrim cause I want acess to the console. Would an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD be enough to run it? Everything else meets the specs but I don't know anything about graphics cards and shit.
That sounds like on board graphics if I'm correct. If you could link your specific specs that would be most helpful. I'm guessing you'll be out of luck though, since onboard graphics tend to suck.

OT: Yay! I'll have no problems running this. Especially with the new RAM I'm getting for Christmas.

I wonder how my old-ish crossfire set up with 3.4Gh AMD 965 Black Edition and 3 1gb 4850's will fair? If it can't handle ultra settings and insane mods I'll finally have a reason for an upgrade.

The first gen bulldozers are disappointing... The i7 2600k is nice and affordable now at $300 and the 2GB 6970's score good... I'll wait till the new year but I'll probably build something new in the spring now that my current cards are slightly below the recommended...

Or I buy the Razer Blade... for $2,700... I just need to keep chanting that I don't need it.

This is pretty cool, actually. I'm just missing the quad-core and the beastly card.

Besides, I'm fairly certain the game's going to be aesthetically decent even at low settings. Plus, add to that all the performance-enhancing little tweaks and mods the users are likely to come up with, and a user with the minimum specs probably won't have to make a terribly huge sacrifice.

Then again, I don't much care about graphics - it's the experience that interests me.

Edit: just curious; anyone else have a GeForce 9800 GTX? I can run New Vegas and Fallout 3 with everything cranked up without the least bit of trouble, and Oblivion's a piece of cake, obviously.

Fallout NV could be modded and it connected to Steam.
