Skyrim platform choice.

I am in an internal debate about what platform to get Skyrim.

PC argument. I have a good laptop that plays most modern games at medium settings. Though I dont usually use it for gaming. The obvious advantage for Skyrim is the mod community and all the good they do. I have a lot of love for the mod communities. Unfortunately this is not my gaming platform of choice and I will not be able to max settings by any means.

PS3. I do however have a loverly 65in tv and 95% of my gaming is done on PS3. The advantage is use of my awesome TV/surround sound and is my gaming style of choice. But this comes at the cost of the mod community.

So what should I do? My laptop will run it but be a lesser experiance but with mod support.
My Console will be glorious but at the cost of mod support.

Its tricky. Very tricky.

I'd say PS3, because I think I heard that they are releasing some construction kits for consoles, or did I hear wrong?

Due to my being flush with funds, I may get it on PC, for the modding, and on Xbox for general use.

You know you have too much money when that's even a viable option

As for your situation, I say PS3. It'd be better to play it on something genuinely impressive than have the mods.

Well, if Bethesda gets there way, you wont sacrifice MOD support for the console choice. Personally, I am going console, simply because it's there and I don't care to drop my hard earned money on a gaming PC. Plus they are optimizing the game for consoles anyway - win-win

I think they said that you'd be able to create mods with the PC tools and then use them on the PC and the PS3.

OT: most likely i'll be getting it for the PC, i think the controls and the interfaces just work better, but if you mostly game on your ps3 you're probably gonna prefer that

Does your laptop have an HDMI port on it?

If so, you can just output the game onto your giant TV :)

That's how I do it anyway.

Five years down the track, you may have a better computer.

It may not run on the next playstation.
(ok, to be fair, Sony is better about backwards compatibility than Microsoft, but still .. the game itself won't scale up like it will on a PC)

That sounds right. Pretty cool that they're finally getting around to enabling console support for user mods. They'll probably have to figure out something like the Halo Waypoint, or Rockstar Club to get people together in the mod community without going direct through XBL or PSN.

There should be mod support on PS3. I'd go with that one. My laptop is too shit to run Oblivion, so I'm 100% sure to get Skyrim on PS3, myself.

Although for most games I'd argue for getting them on a console because of the ease of use and prioritised development, for Skyrim I will have to say PC because the last Elder Scrolls game on their own were honestly not that great. Its the PC mods that made them the fondly remembered thing they are today.

Holy shit... if that's true then I'm definitely getting the PS3 version... will save me a butt load of cash (from upgrading my PC that is).

That said, I thought skyrim was going to be a Games for Windows Live title on PC... I fear mod support might be console exclusive (which would be a really dick move).

Just a fear though. Time will tell.

I dont understand Bethesda. Making an ageing platform well overdue for replacement the platform for developing a flagship product. I suspect this will loose them loyal pc gamers such as myself and some of those who crossed over out of frustration with Vista etc in the past and then found that all the games are made for 14 year olds with ADHD.

However, trying to look at the bright side, Oblivion 1 was also developed with the Xbox in mind and I bought it and my old xbox at the same time. 2 weeks later I saw oblivion on my friends pc and realised what I was missing. A few grand and a week later and I was also playing it on the PC and was introduced to the sheer volume of free content upgrades and capabilities the mod community bring to these games. (www.tesnexus.com is your friend if your a pc oblivion gamer)

Since then I have been modding and creating mods myself and have oblivion today with SSAO, 4096x4096 textures and it takes my breath away how beautiful it can be.

My point being, It looks like Bethesda are going to dumb this down much further than oblivion. However, if they make it friendly to modders the modding community might actually save this for the PC. Personally after buying brink recently I no longer consider Bethesda a maker of good quality pc games.

PC, it will look nicer, but most importantly - mods. I like the ability to customize my gameplay.

I say get it on the console, they clearly stated consoles are the focus, bet the PC version will just be a shoddy port and Bethesda doesn't hold mush of a quality standard to begin with so god knows what sort of turd they will sell.

I'll get the PC version when it goes cheap and when there are about 20 patches for it.

I'd say PS3. With a TV like that and the surround sound the experience will be much more enjoyable than a game on medium settings only.

I myself don't really have any interest in modding Skyrim, I prefer to just play the game straight out of the box properly. I will get it on the Xbox 360. I would get it on my PS3, but then I wouldn't be able to chat to any of my friends whilst playing it (all my friends have an Xbox 360).

Not on a console thats for sure. Given the age and capability of your average Xbox target market, it could be the most limited mod community ever. If these people owned a decent PC they wouldnt bother playing games on an xbox in the first place I would guess.

I seriously doubt Microsoft would ever allow modded content. Its against everything they stand for. Free, open and replayable. Not likely.

Agree. Oblivion was a very medicore game in itself. With mods, its an epic classic. If you have a decent PC I would say first choice.

Like I said before, it was made for console in the first place and still managed to be a much worse experience. I still remember how long it was taking to go in and out of buildings on the xbox, really annoying. Was one of the things I first noticed on the PC before I even started modding it.

I am in pretty much the same situation, decent laptop, PS3, or Xbox360. With the way microsoft acts, I think PS3 would be my best bet for the console mod support, But my bro at another house only has a 360, so he would be missing out on it, as well as the chance for me to talk to xbox friends about the game/while playing
