Can't stand them personally, but if you look through shit long enough you may just find a diamond. They have a very small group of very solid songs. Pity all the rest is garbage.

Slipknot and Rise Against are big and mainstream bands.
Are you in America?
'Cause RA certainly aren't mainstream over here.

EDIT: @ Assclown, can't you recognise sarcasm?
Perhaps it was a bit of a bad use of sarcasm, but I really don't care what people think of my music, and if anything I laugh at them for listening to talentless scrubs like Lady GaGa.
I think Lady Gaga has talent in her singing, and her dress sence.
I think Corey Taylor has a nice voice.

But their music output in my opinion is in the same boat(as in their both bad).

Apologies, Assclown.
Even if you aren't a fan, you must like Snuff, or Vermillion Pt.2, or even Before I Forget?
I remember I used to hate them, but that was like 5 years ago when I was still listening to Pop music. Since then my eyes have opened :)
Because moving onto rock from pop is really broadening?
What is precisely wrong with Slipknot in comparison to Cynic, or whatever, yeah Cynic is much more complicated but I'm gonna go ahead and say Slipknot's music is gonna work more with dynamics as popular music often does. Just because Cynic or whatever bands you like are better in some areas doesn't mean they are indisputably better.

Having said that, I don't even like Slipknot, so I'm not entirely sure why I'm arguing against you, I guess I just don't particularly like musical snobbery.
Well i did say my opinion didnt i?

Well for example, Slipknot has boring predictable structures, its riffs are extremely simplistic tremolo picking and chugging, so how are they innovative is beyond me.

And like someone said, you cant brush off Cynic for just being technical and complicated, thats what just about every Death Metal band is.

The special thing about Cynic, is that no other band sounds like them, their great amount of experimentation, their interesting dreamy atmospheres, their amazing structures, compleatly unpredictable.

This is ofcourse my opinion, i can be wrong, but i dont know why you argue against me, i only stated that i thought Cynic were musical genius, i never said they were better.

Like I said before, Slipknot is not meant to be complex or atmospheric (though when I want atmospheric music I don't turn to freakin' Death Metal), Slipknot is fun, thats all it is, their music, even if it's not good by whatever standards you have, is enjoyable to listen to, while I would like Rolo Tomassi or Between the Buried and Me to be more popular than them, it's not gonna happen because those two bands aren't, for the most part enjoyable to listen to. What annoys me is when people claim this band or other is the cancer of music because it's not creative or whatever, because funnily enough, Slipknot are not stopping Cynic or BTBAM from making music, in fact, they're most likely helping more people to get into metal and get onto better things, so this musical snobbery around Metalcore being a cancer is just plain dumb.
And besides, Cynic will pale in comparison to other bands and then what? Are Cynic the cancer that is killing metal once there is something more creative? It just doesn't make any sense to me. (If you want a band I consider more creative than Cynic try a bit of Animals As Leaders, or just listen to a Guthrie Govan song)

[sub]by the way, despite my love for them, I never have and never will call myself a "maggot".[/sub]
You might not call yourself one.But that doesn't change the fact that owning all their albums, and loving them makes you a maggot. You have no say in the matter.
ummm no, I am not a maggot.
I love Slipknot.
I will never EVER refer to myself as a maggot.
So I think you will find, I have a say in the matter.

Nope, it does not.

Most people who call themselves "maggots" are 14 year old kids.

Please refrain from attempting to tell me what YOU think I am.

I will never fucking call myself a maggot and if anyone else does I will set them straight and tell that I am absolutely not one. I just like Slipknot. It is not a lifestyle choice. Thanks very much.

I listen to a few of their songs considering that Joey Jordison is pretty damn good. However, they don't really have what I would call, high quality guitar solos. At first they sound great until they get to the point where they want to spam as many notes as possible in as few seconds as possible.

I think the only few songs that have really stood out on me would be "Snuff" and "Opium of the People."

I will give them respect as their bass player died recently and couping over the death of anyone close to you is hard.

I'll start not hating them like the depths of hell filled with Sadam Hussiens, when Justin Bieber admits hes gay.

Ok then, please explain to me what you consider musical genious?
Lady GaGa? JLS? Lil Wayne? What?
King Crimson.

EDIT: Gorguts,Neurosis,Cynic.
Ok I'm going to level with you, I have never even heard of them, so yeah they must be awesome!
Not to say that whatever I haven't heard of isn't good.

My idea of genious would be Matt Bellamy, Tim Mcilrath, Corey Taylor and Mike Shinoda most of all!
And I've never heard of any of the guys you just listed. Therefore by your logic they can't be geniuses either. After looking up those names though I just have to say, I hope you enjoy your pop-metal. Those guys have done nothing that truly defines them as genius as far as I'm concerned. I'm not saying they're all bad, just not quite on the level you seem to be placing them.

Tony Iommi owns all those fools with just his severed finger.

A resounding mehhhhh. They're a moderately talented bunch with the ability to play halfway-decent consumer-oriented metal, hampered by an apparently compulsive need to be "dark" and a handful of useless gimmicks. (STOP TRYING TO MAKE THE MASKS SCARIER! THEY'RE NOT SCARY! THEY'RE FUNNY!) There are better metal bands, both old and new, to be found without much difficulty.

Slipknot is not creative, but its also commercial and pretty souless, it gives a terrible representation and impression of metal. Even though it might be a gateway band, although i dont see how it is, considering its lack of atmosphere, commercialism and simplcity, when alot of Metal is non-commercial,atmospheric, and quite a few bands write complex material, and least we forget, its mostly extreme.

Metalcore is a cancer, they bring in a lack of creativity, commercialism into metal, while blocking out actual bands. There are exceptions, but Metalcore is bad for metal, like Lamb of God, Pantera, Bullet For My Valentine,Trivium and all that horrible lot that just take the worse of metal, and turn it into a commercial turd.

Ive heard of Guthrie Govan, but was never interested, i suppose he is a good guitarist.

Right, I got into Good Charlotte, and then Slipknot and now bands like Rolo Tomassi and BTBAM, whichever way you look at it they are a gateway band, and as I said already, they do not stop whatever bands you like from making music they can't kill it unless they literally go and kill the bands that you like. Which ... would be interesting to say the least.
And the idea that Pantera aren't real metal is quite frankly ridiculous when they created a whole freakin' genre, and the only band you listed which is commercial is Bullet, because frankly, neither of the other three were ever popular. And they all put out relatively interesting music, the harmonies in the solos on Ascendancy were all good and saying they have no creativity is purely subjective, I could say Cynic have no merit because all they do is write ridiculously complex music and scream over the top of it, and that would be my subjective opinion, it's not wrong or right, but you can't claim a band has no creativity just because you can't see the creativity.
Oh, and "i suppose he is a good guitarist"???

ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

You're having a go at Slipknot for a lack of creativity and you haven't heard the best guitarist in the world at the moment. Well, I suggest you listen to Ner Ner and Waves and then reply back.

Their songs are a bit up and down with me. I love most but others just bore me to death. Overall I would say I do like them quite a lot.

Am I the only one that finds the phrase "Apologies, Assclown" hilarious?

OT: Funny, but I don't think I ever heard one of their songs.
