In general I treat cops with respect for the same reason I do so for firemen, paramedics, doctors, etc. These are the people who I might need to save my life or my property one day. They do dangerous, tedious, mostly thankless jobs. They have to deal with people when they're at their very worst, and be ready at a moment's notice to do shit the rest of us can't think of doing.

Sure, some cops are assholes. The ones I've met have been, well, people; sometimes petty, or surly, or bigoted, but basically people.

This. As someone that has studied with cops and is currently studying to be a lawyer I can tell you that 9 times out of 10 it isn't the cop's fault that its taking so long. It is the department regulations that require they do certain things, like not let you in your house. Sure it may be stupid but the officers on the scene have no control over it.

Police earn my respect. I have an overweight police officer that patrols my little town. NOW WHAT GOOD IS HE GOING TO BE IN A FOOTCHASE?! I have a few others who like to hide. IMO presence is the most important job of an officer, not hiding in the bush waiting for a crime to happen instead of preventing it. Oh wait, the state doesn't get any money for prevented crimes. Hmmm...

Dude, seriously, this is why the Portland police are so edgy around people. Why does everyone here have to be a colossal asshat to them? They were doing their job and trying to keep you safe. If they had let you in, and that guy had shimmied into your place with a gun, everyone would have been on them for not doing their job and preventing a dangerous situation.

As to how I treat them, it's with respect. I've only met one cop who was an ass and she was a Highway Patrol Officer who pulled over the driver for going two miles over the speed limit. She was really rude and mean because two people had been killed recently by speeders. Despite this, she still let us go without a ticket.

The other cops were wonderfully professional. I had to call them once when I thought there were intruders breaking into the house (turns out it was unannounced roofers). Three cops, one of which was SWAT came to my rescue and made sure the house was safe before having me come out from my hiding place in case someone was inside.

So they're not jerks who do convoluted things just to piss you off, they're just trying to prevent whatever bad situation they can think of.

I like this story, but without an age range I'm a little confused about the context. It may be far funnier depending on your age.

Anyway, I support smart-ass answers to retarded orders, just be careful, lest you be attacked by a cop who then arrests YOU for "disrupting the peace" or "assaulting an officer." Judges can't be trusted to not side with dicks that abuse their power, so just be careful or make sure to film altercations if your state/country allows it.
I'm 25, and there was way to many people standing around with cameras hoping something would happen for them to do anything to me.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I've been lucky enough to not really have to deal with them, the local cops here are fine but I've heard stories bout how the rangers will fuck you up if they don't like you so.... if I had to deal with them I would probably be... respectful.

Having a cousin who is a police officer, I have nothing but the utmost respect for them because they risk their live just about everyday so you stay safe. You're just being a complete asshole because you couldn't go in your house. You could have gone anywhere else like a bar or a Starbucks and just relaxed. Instead you heckled the police for doing their job because you're an idiot. Oh and just so you know, cops tend to remember people who aren't cooperative, or who are just douchebags in general to them when they are doing their jobs. So if you ever need a cop to come to your house, you might be waiting a little bit longer than most people.

Wow... I feel embarassed that I am complimented your jackassery by responding to this forum, but I'm bored and you have a complete lack of authority.

If I was in their shoes, I would take my time responding to ANY event involving you.

They didn't block it for every one, they blocked off 1.5 houses on the left and right of the suspects place only on our street, not the other side of the block, not the other side of my duplex.

The cops know my address, as a school employee I'm a mandatory reporter of child abuse, I see a kid get spanked and they had it coming I have to file a report, and the cop has to take the report. Why because those are our jobs.

When dealing with the authorities I say as little as possible and keep my answers short and specific to the questions.
I like to choose my battles, not just randomly mouth my way into them.

I don't really think what you've done is something to be proud of. Your response to a potentially fatal standoff is to whine about how you can't get into your house and then make things difficult for the people trying to resolve the situation?

You have more in common with the kids jacked up on candy than you'd probably like to think. Entitled, spoiled, petty, possessed of horribly skewed priorities, and just plain unpleasant.

Just go do something else for a while. 3 hours out of the house isn't going to hurt you.
Actually the kids doesn't know better, as an adult he should.

What you need to understand is that cops are doing their job and they have to follow protocol. In cases where they contact SWAT they can't come around it, breaking the rule and endangering a civilian at this point could cause them to lose their job. Pissing them off just because you are bored just makes you an ass. Do not brag about this.

I don't like the police. No one in NYC likes the police. Not even the police.

I especially don't like the ones that beat the shit out of unarmed protesters as if this were a third world country having a revolt. And my police force is doing this to a lot of people, everyday, down at wall street.

And the police hardly even show up for where real crime is a problem up north, in the Bronx, where street crime is insane compared to the rest of the city. Yet I almost never see them or their cars, with the exception of a few auxiliary ones or traffic officers. The project buildings, which are owned by the city, get no protection.

Now I won't bother a cop nor treat him any worse than anyone else by default, but I don't hold him at a higher regard because of his job, because ether of those things go ageist my personal philosophies.

Funnily enough, no. I am a smart ass, but not to someone carrying a 9mm handgun. Either way, I never really have trouble with them, so no. I do have to say, it seems like the majority of the cops in my area are total dicks. However, I went downtown recently, and got into a conversation with a cop who works downtown (different police force), and this turned into me talking with a bunch of other cops, his friends. The downtown cops are much friendlier than the ones in my town.

Then they were simply creating a quarantined perimeter around the suspect's location. Standard procedure as usual. Letting you in would have created a liability and a worst case situation they couldn't afford to risk. Let them do their job. It's stressful enough already.

I'm anything but random, I may be loud but it's not like I'm shouting obscenities whenever I see a cop. I yelled something maybe once every 20-30 minutes for the three hours.

The officer in my afternoon building, Officer Savage (I know his name rocks), just stopped by my office during lunch and said his boss didn't know what he was doing. Procedurally when he called SWAT he should have had the street cleared and he didn't. Also they apparently didn't have any reason to believe he was armed. The guy just didn't show up for court so they came to arrest him and then it blew out of proportion.

He gave me a contact in the department to file a complaint for situations handling. The guy in charge apparently called in a bunch of off duty people that ended up just standing around and they are not happy about it.

I don't mind police when they are not impeding my day. And I love kids, kind of why I work in the schools, only thing I said about the kids was how jacked up on Halloween candy they were, actually most still are.

Oh hey look, for their concern for your safety and following of standard procedures and -not- treating you like crap as has so often happened in some highly publicized cases, you treated a bunch of people who have some of the hardest jobs around like crap, made their nights hell, impeded their efforts and tried to sound like a complete know it all.

People like you are why we have abusive cops.

As a cashier, I often just do what I'm told to do, and am heaped with abuse about how slow things are going and how they wanted to be out of the store thirty seconds ago, and get my share of smartasses.

I despise them all. I've been at the point where I had a stapler in one hand, a job application in the other, and a death wish, trying to figure out the most painful place on someone's forehead to get a staple. You would have been the guy who pushed me over the edge.

You're "that c**t" that the police mock endlessly on their coffee breaks. You're the guy they have Mortal Kombat fantasies about. And if you're ever in trouble, don't be stunned if one of the police recognizes you and the priority for your safety drops.

Because, as professional as they're supposed to be, they still hate the shit out of you.
