I find my words are usually all I need to carry a point.

No, I know exactly what you mean. Constant use can become incredibly annoying.

Incidentally, I just want to call that one of the first 5 posts will have a bunch of smiley faces in it, trying to get a laugh.

When people do this to me it drives me batshit insane. I use smileys for sarcasm and can't remember the last time I actually expressed emotion from it.

I use smiley faces to indicate when I'm kidding or being playful, otherwise some of my posts could be misinterpreted as malicious. Basically, when I use :p it means that I'm being silly.

Plus, everybody knows that I send that ***** a smiley face. Bitches love smiley faces

I like eccentuating my sentences with a descriptive smily every now and then, though I usually only do this too much in TF2, when I often reply with only a smily, the main culprits being: :D, :3, T-T, T_T, and ><

I use smiley faces because I'm always worried that someone might think I'm serious when I'm messing and think I'm a dick

Something i fogot to add is the text ones are slightly bearable but the msn ones are so much worse beacuse they gat changed into actual faces making it even harder to ignore them.

Is your friend a pre-teen girl?

That was mean of me, apologies to all pre-teen girls who visit... this.. video-game website.

Anyway, I use them occasionally to prove when I am joking, but other than that, not so much.

I never use smileys. Ever. I hate them. I loathe them. Every time I see one, I get this urge to punch them in the.. er... font. I check under my bed for them every night before going to slee... Wait, what?

I don't know why, but for some reason a smiley or emoticon at the end of an intelligent post somehow seems to break the whole post for me. I just stare at it, wondering how to respond. There you have the perfect response... and this weird attachment dragging it down. It's almost as bad as ending a powerful phrase with "I guess....".

Haha no, he's a guy about 16.
And thats the use i would find fine because without it they would prob just think i was being a dick.

Well since I've had several people get pissed off over something I've said when I'm only joking and they couldn't tell, I kinda have to use smilies just to avoid confusion or unwanted confrontation.

It drives me mad as well. I think emoticons in general are aggressively unnecessary but what really irritates me is when blokes use it. I dunno, smiley faces (winking or otherwise) just look highly effeminate in most cases.

As with most things, Moderation is key.

Careful usage of Smiley Faces (A form of Emoticon[footnote]A text based image usually showing a person, item, or action. In some places, an Emoticon is a small image, usually a Yellow ball[/footnote]) can make them alright, and sometimes help to bring a point across, but overindulgence can lead to problems, including problems with friends and family around you.
