I hate smoking so i endorse it. However i heard if you have you bar listed as a smoking clinic or something, you can legally do it.

EDIT: What i just wrote sounds like a load of balls, il try and find the link to the article.

Smoking bans are stupid. Especially in bars, where it's understood that there are things there that are bad for you.

What was the matter with the way things used to be done? A room for smoking and a room for non-smokers. That worked fine.

I'm not a smoker myself, I just don't think it's right that people's rights are being trodden on. They'll start curbing drinking next...
Maybe they won't though, now I think about it. They'll never ban it outright, even though they'll tell us its bad for us, because the taxes gained from tobacco helps the government a lot...

A lot of bars I know have actually gained custom since the bad. Several people I know (including myself) avoided going out much when the bars were full of fags (brit usage) but get out a lot more now, usually dragging many of the folks who don't normally get out.
I wouldn't object to some bars continuing to maintain a smoke-free environment, but a government mandate that forces business to ignore what is economically viable to them is a little silly. I work with a guy that used to manage a pub in Britain, and he said that the fellow that took over the post from him has laid off half the staff, due to lost business.

Really, this boils down to letting adults CHOOSE to expose themselves to smoking, and since studies show that smoking is a declining habit, I'd say we could have left off banning it for 20 years, and solved the problem through the eventual inertia. Mind you, this would assume that the governments involved were actually spending the tax money they get from the various sin taxes on the related illnesses, rather than dumping it into general revenue.

That's a different argument, though.

Smoking bans are fucking stupid. It should be up to the owner of the property as to whether or not people can smoke inside.
Agreed.

Also, when you go to a nightclub and are surrounded by about 1000 sweaty drunk people you will reminesce of the times when the smell of cigarettes was the only gross scent aound you.

If its a cigar bar, in that its purpose is for smoking, then it should be allowed to have smoking. If the business doesn't have to do with smoking as its chief source of revenue, sure, I guess ban it. If smoking IS its biggest income, and it is an official smoking bar, then there it should be allowed to have smoking. If you don't like inhaling smoke- don't go to a fucking cigar bar.

I don't smoke and I can even die from being around smoke for more than about 15 minutes, so smoking bans are good for me.

They really just need to ban cigarettes.

Really? I could die within seconds from a drunk man playing with a gun...

Now do you want to ban drinks too? Or guns?

I think there's just as much reason to ban them as well.

Edit:

I agree with the ban, it's better for health reasons which no sane person will argue with.

But I don't like the fact that smokers and people who run bars have been stripped of the choice to do so. If it was declared that alcohol was banned everywhere except your own home how would you feel. Especially if you were a polite and considerate drinker who always chose to drink at home anyway.

As a former smoker who used to be considerate of other people I'm dissappointed with the smug attitude non-smokers give smokers after being forced outside. Is it not enough to just have your cake and eat it?

That was quite the awesome post, and sums up my feelings very well. On one hand I don't care about the smoking bans, since I have always gone outside to smoke even when I didn't need to. On the other hand is my outrage over people Hypocriticizing - and yes, I just made up that word - and saying how bad smoking is for other people, while having no problem with the fact that roughly HALF of homicides in my city are alcohol fueled, similarly with rapes, bashings, and vandalism.

To look at this and say that smokers are hurting everyone else, so kick 'em out - screw their feelings. But drinkers are just hurting themselves, let 'em stay.... is quite moronic.

If anything, the drinkers should be kicked out, and the bars left for the peacful, and unaggressive smokers =P

There has been a smoking ban in my state for over 6 years now. I can't smoke anywhere indoors except in my own house. What's really funny is, the bars and restaurants are losing tons of money from it, which means the state is losing tax revenue. That will show them.

Q: Do I want to ban drinks too? Yeah. yeah, I do. Nothing good ever comes from that, and the same goes for heroine and cocaine. Guns? Why not? You already need a license to own one, so why not just ban them? See where I'm going with this?

My point is that no matter if items are banned or considered illegal, people are still going to get them. Heroine's illegal, you say? Then why am I able to get it so easily from the addict in the alley? Guns only legal to have if you own a license? Then how do criminals get them so easily? It doesn't matter what the law says, if people are going to do drugs, drink, smoke, get guns or whatever, they're going to do it no matter what the law says.

And I see your point about the rights being taken away, but when it directly can cause harm/ kill one or multiple other lives, the rights sorta go out the window.

But, what you said could become a law rather than just ban them all together. Just keep it in your house so no one gets hurt.
