i have a cousin that smokes and i have always asked to stop and ask her why she does it. she always shrugs and says she doesnt know. i want to know how and why people decide to take up smoking.

EDIT: also can i ask the smokers if they have tried quitting or ex-smokers about their experiences with quitting.

Hey there, welcome to the Escapist :)

There was thread on the lines of this subject not too long ago, and it turned a bit nasty.

But anyway, i started smoking because of the whole it'll chill you out, de-stress you kinda thing. It's also great for socialising, there seems to be some bond between smokers.

Before anyone goes on about the risks, i'm not ignorant, i know the risks, i know what i'm getting myself into, as do most smokers.

I don't. It's expensive.

I'll buy some for my friends if they pay me (we're underage y'see)

I'd rather drink & drugs destroy me, not smoke.

No, for many reasons. Cancer and prices being two of them.

I'm currently trying to help my friend quit, and soon my girlfriend too.

I have been known to have the occasional smoke whenever it was offered to me.
Never went out and bought a packet on my own though.

As for the reasons one might smoke, they're simple:

It feels good and you look cool while doing it, it's a win win situation if you take lung cancer out of the equation.

I can't afford to, I take the occasional drag off one of my friends, but I don't see what people like about it. It's the biggest turn off ever.

I don't. If I want to ruin my health and pay for it, I'll go to McDonald's or KFC. At least I'll enjoy it.

Besides, I hate smoke.

I can't stand the smell, I don't want it in my clothes, I don't want it as my breath and I don't want any nasty side effects either.

Smoking is feh.

Don't worry, this thread is quite different from the other one.
The last one we had was a bit of a hate thread towards smokers.

no, never appealed. some friends do and when they smoked the smell was bad, they coughed like buggery, it ruled over them and is really expensive.

I grew up around smoking, so the smell doesn't bother me, I'm underage, so I don't smoke at the moment (I also have no money). But I'm not rigidly opposed to the idea... As long as I'm not paying for it...

Do I smoke? Weed: yes. Cigarettes: no. Cigars: occasionally.

Weed is the most obvious. You smoke it to get high. Cigars, on the other hand, I smoke mainly at parties as a socializing thing, and even then only once every two months or so. Never smoked a cigarette, and I don't really plan on it.

If you only smoked one cigarette a day, you probably wouldn't get lung cancer. Or at least, you'd be at extremely low risk for it, compared to other smokers (most smoke like five a day, I think? I know my dad smoked three packs a day.)
i get through abot 10 a day,. altho i know people who are like 15 and get through 20, as far a teenage smokers go they are a lot worse than most of the adult smokers i know

I don't and I don't see any reason why you would. I mean, it can potentiality kill you or give you cancer, it is addictive and you have to go out every 10 minutes for a smoke break, you always have to buy more and they're not cheap, and it doesn't help you in any way. Sure, maybe it can "chill you out" for a while, but so can listening to music or watching a movie. Those things can't hurt you. Also, I think it makes you, your house, and your clothes smell awful and you can always tell when you're around a smoker. I think it's just a useless thing to do.

If you smoke, you don't look any cooler to me. In fact, I think it makes you look less cool. But that's just me. And like I said, there's way more, less damaging things to do that feel better.
