As for the reasons one might smoke, they're simple:

It feels good and you look cool while doing it, it's a win win situation if you take lung cancer out of the equation.
If you only smoked one cigarette a day, you probably wouldn't get lung cancer. Or at least, you'd be at extremely low risk for it, compared to other smokers (most smoke like five a day, I think? I know my dad smoked three packs a day.)
When I was talking about lung cancer, I was actually referring to heavy smokers unlike myself.

No.
I loathe the smell of tobacco.
By now everybody knows that it's not good for you, so I'm not going to go on about that.
I just find the stink, the coughing, and the incessant need to have a smoke a total turn off. And ashtrays. Disgusting.

i get through abot 10 a day,. altho i know people who are like 15 and get through 20, as far a teenage smokers go they are a lot worse than most of the adult smokers i know
I'm assuming you mean cigarettes, not packs. If you go through ten packs a day, you should be dead, by all rights.

Anyway, yeah, that's pretty much the point I was trying to make. Thanks for backing it up with faktz.
No problem dude, hey does anyone know how bad america is for teenage smokers? im wondering if they are worse than we are for it, no disrespect intended to the people.

EDIT: what do americans qualify as a pack? 10 or 20 im just curious

I don't smoke but my two older sisters do. I asked them why but they always say the same thing. "I don't know." I've told them to stop but they haven't.

I was thinking about that. I was considering taking up smoking, and only smoking once a day. I really wanted to do it to test how much willpower I had (I have an extremely addictive personality.)
Hey, my friend Eric tried that, he was addicted in 2 weeks. No joke.

I'm assuming you live in the UK? I can't produce any solid numbers, but I am pretty sure smoking and drinking are both worse over there than over here.
yeah i live in suffolk, the south east of Great Britain, to be fair over where i live it aint too bad, you always get the nightclubs (or societys friday night enema) but aside from that it is alright

The longer you smoke the more addicted you become. Thumbs up for everyone who tries to quit!

I've never understood why you would want to pay for shortening your life and I don't smoke myself.

Casual smoking is different but I don't understand that either :p

I was just using "you" in a general sense.
I know that, but I was somehow compelled to right that answer anyway.

Ugh, clubs. Ew.[/quote]

yeah don't remind me, guys in pyjamas (tracksuits) or bright pink polo shirts, women who looked like they stepped on a spade, wondered what it was, and then did it again!! plastered as hell puking on the pavements, its not a pleasent sight to see, now when your mate is driving by them pouring out in the morning hungover as anything and honking his horn, watching them writhe like slugs in a salt bath, it really does the soul good

Not a smoker, I have a couple reasons why not:
1)I have an incredibly addictive personality

2)There's this thing in my family, we tend to have problems with circulation, and smoking doesn't help. My dad had to get two bypass surgeries in his leg over the course of 10 years because he smokes.

Smoked for about 4 years now, I'm 19. I get through a pack and a half a day. Yeah, most of the time I ask myself why I do it, cause it is stupid. I'm £1500 overdrawn and I think, maybe it would be less if I didn't smoke. But I also think it wouldn't be less, all of my friends are pretty much in the same financial situation as me and they don't smoke. I'd just spend more money on food and alcohol if I didn't smoke.

Yeah, their are risks, but they're ones I'm obviously willing to take. Or I wouldn't smoke. A polish chap I used to work with smoked 2 or 3 packs a day, he stopped smoking and had no more money that he did when he was smoking. It was just spent more on alcohol and other things that you do when you're not smoking. I know if I wasn't smoking I'd probably drink 4 or 5 more points in the time I spend outside a pub. Which can be anywhere from £7 to £15 I reckon. Alcohol is just as bad for you in excess.

But again, I'm not trying to make excuses, What I do is stupid and its my own fault. But eh, I'm not looking to stop any time soon.

Yes. It relieves stress. A dumb argument because if I didn't smoke I wouldn't be stressed :) but true nonetheless. Also, my friends smoke; it's about social interaction. Like facebook ;-)

And I started one time when we couldn't get any weed... which incidentally I avoided trying for as long as I could as it involved smoking. I used to think smoking as awful... until I tried it and got hooked.

Only have 1 or 2 cigs per day though. Still worse than 0 but hey.

Hey there, welcome to the Escapist :)

There was thread on the lines of this subject not too long ago, and it turned a bit nasty.

But anyway, i started smoking because of the whole it'll chill you out, de-stress you kinda thing. It's also great for socialising, there seems to be some bond between smokers.

Before anyone goes on about the risks, i'm not ignorant, i know the risks, i know what i'm getting myself into, as do most smokers.
Ill be nice(er)... Actaully I think I will Just leave before I read somthing I will be forced to yell at.

Oh, I believe you. Drug and alcohol addiction run strong in the family, so I understand the risk.
It's one I'm willing to take, though. I'm very curious.

I wish you all the best, it'll be a challenge, that's for sure. Maybe you'll be able to prevent it through force of will. My friend couldn't, he's still trying to quit 3 years later.

I started smoking because I saw most of my immediate family doing it. My father, brother, and sister are all smokers. I smoke about 1/2 a pack a day. I have been smoking for about 10 years now, but I have been trying to quit lately. It's hard and it makes me cranky, but I try none the less.

I smoke cigarettes because I find the taste of tobacco smoke and the feeling of nicotine pleasurable, and that's my goddamn business and not yours.

I have considered quitting many times, and have successfully cut back several times, but truth be told I have never wholly and fully wanted to quit smoking cigarettes, and that's the bottomline. If you're not fully committed to it you will break and smoke another pretty quickly.

Now, mary jane, on the other hand, I have never considered quitting. But it isn't addictive and leaves no withdrawal symptoms. I smoke on a pretty regular basis, almost every day, and if I need to stop for whatever reason for a week, two weeks, etc, I could do it pretty easily. Not only is pot safer and arguably much more pleasurable than cigarettes are, it's also much easier to put it down if you have to.
