Aww, come on now, the show had a lot of stuff going on that you notice as an older viewer. For instance:

* Papa Smurf is a witch doctor/drug chemist.
* Smurfette was used for breeding purposes (hence the appearance of the "kid" Smurfs several seasons after her debut).
* The show was actually set in this huge, sprawling fantasy kingdom with its own heroes and legends and whatnot, but we only ever focused on this tiny patch of mushrooms and the little blue men living in them who could, at any time, be wiped out by a passing turnip cart. Sort of a cool concept, really.

Of course, the movie is going to be about the Smurfs going to New York. So...yeah.
