No Chrono Trigger?

And I second Lunar. Lunar for the PSX was one of the best RPGs in a while.
Hes already played Chronotrigger hasnt he? I would go for Secret of Evermore that game was awesome, really funny as well espicially that forest where you get lost in the third world.

Terrenigma as well, one of the most touching stories ever in an RPG, a bittersweet gem

Vagrant Story. Awesome, awesome game and I'm shocked nobody has mentioned it.
Tried playing that a while ago, i just couldn't set into the groove that you get when you play an RPG like that.

There is a little obscure game on the SNES called Dragon View, try to get that one; It's a really cool game (you'll have to get over the choppyness of the overworld though).

Two good rpg games i can remember from my childhood vaguely:
Wild Arms
and
Jade Coccoon

I can't remember exactly what they were about but i remember liking them and them taking up a good lengthy amount of time.
On a side note its not an rpg, but recomment playing Hogs of War, bit like worms, but 3D with pigs, great fun!

Star ocean, the second story...

I've said it a million times in the past, but that game is still the best time I had with my PSX

Wild Arms and Suikoden for teh PSX.

They came out shortly before FF VII and were over-looked because of all the FF hype. Both of them are outstanding, long, and really involved.

Vangaurd Bandits if you like Strat-RPG's (PS). Or Final Fantasy Tactics (but you said you didn't want final fantasy) (PS)

A big hell yeah for Terranigma, that games cool for so many reasons. Your character fights with a SPEAR! Woot! (SNES)

Threads of Fate- not exactly an RPG but an action game with some RPG elements.(PS)

Blood Omen- back when Silicon Knights made fly shit. Blood Omen spawned the Legacy of Kain series and was the most RPGy of them. Great story. (PS)

Lunar Silver Star Story Complete/Lunar Eternal Blue Complete: Good traditional RPG's, alot of charm, funny characters.(PS)

Wait, what the hell am I thinking? XENOGEARS! YOU HAVE TO PLAY XENOGEARS! Don't worry, it's not like that shit Xenosaga.(PS)

Vandel Hearts! Some of these games mentioned push the definitions of "RPG" a little but with storylines executed as good as "Vagrant Story" (even if the gameplay is a little baffling) these are so chocked full of awesome incarnate that you'll soil yourself in a fun way!

And whats the point in playing a game, good sir,
if one does not end up defecating in ones draws due to over exposure to awesome?

Good sir you have opened my eyes to a new philosophy! I must away to the underwear store for I wish to do nothing but bathe myself in copious amounts of "awesome"

The Breath of fire and Shin Megami Tensei series.
Also, Brave Fencer Musashi and Alundra, but those are more Zelda like.
