Another good one would have to be Legend of Legaia. That game could stand on the unique battle system alone.

Tales of Phantasia (SNES) Might as well start with the beginning of the series (and WHAT a beginning!)

Grandia (PSX) always makes me smile, great gameplay.

SaGa Frontier II (PSX) the SaGa series always makes Square's other RPGs look like tricycles. Hard, intricate game, but a very rewarding gameplay system. Plus: Plot!

Lunar SSSC: (PSX) Old-school gameplay, awesomely chatty characters(Kyle!)/plot.

Lufia/Lufia 2: (SNES) Interestingly enough, Lufia 2 is a prequel to the events of Lufia 1 (so you know what's going to happen to these characters (or do you?)) Awesome puzzles, moving plot.

Treasure Hunter G: Awesome gameplay, one heck of a plot twist, and the only game I know of where you get ambushed during a pissing contest (literally). Also: Spell-casting monkey!

Suikoden and Suikoden 2 were good, traditional JRPGs.

Wild Arms and Suikoden for teh PSX.

They came out shortly before FF VII and were over-looked because of all the FF hype. Both of them are outstanding, long, and really involved.
Yeah, those.

I'm in the same mindset at the moment however I'm also trying to go threw a few ps2 games as well

This just about fit the rpg catagory but only just however there both fantastic games
legend of zelda
and espeically illusion of gaia where fantastic
front misson 1 (snes) and 3 (psx) where great games
parasite eve 1&2 where great

and tales of phantasia on the snes is a fantastic rpg its been made countless times on various consoles but i hear that the ps1 version is the best followed by the snes

im currently going through xenogears at the moment (great game so far)
ive played a few of the fire emblem games and they where great

damn so many good games no wonder i have felt disappointed with consoles since the ps2 Jrpgs seriously went down hill after the ps1 :(

Valkyrie Profile. One of the most beautiful and satisfying games ever created - it still gives me shivers down my spine after all these years.

It only gets forgotten about because it's so expensive and hard to find. If you can't find it and you've got a PSP, get it on that instead.

Illusion of Gaia; the spiritual sequel to Soul Blazer, and prequel to Terranigma.

One of my all-time favs growing up in spite of some translation errors.

The only thing bad about that game was the ending, It was one of the most WTF ending I have seen in a video game.

True... And it wasn't really satisfying. It left me wanting more, but not in the good way.

Here's what I think;

- Vagrant Story (Brilliant, and by far the best game set in Ivalice, in my opinion)
- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (It's friggen Persona, get it!)
- Terranigma (Epic and very fun)
- Wild ARMs: The Second Detonator (I think it's better than the original)
- Xenogears (A lot better than what Monolith is doing with Xenosaga, plus this game is actually a game)

That's all I can think of now.

I don't get the hate for Xenosaga though. I played it and loved every second of Episode 1 and 3. Though the religious references near the end made me LOL and say WTF over and over again. Maybe it's because I haven't played Xenogears?

And there won't be any new Xenosaga (as you know it). Monolith ended it at Episode 3. Which is kinda sad, because it was supposed to be six games within a chronological progression, with Xenogears along the timeline of he fifth.

The Lufia games for the Super nintendo I always enjoyed, theres alot of gems in the JRPG category on the SNES. That's pretty much what the system is made for in my opinion. Also, the Dragon Quest games on the PS. I think.....damn I can't remember the number. Dragon Quest VII for the PS1 is just great. If you're looking to lose a large chunk of your life in an engaging RPG, I'd go with Dragon Quest. Although, it's not quite up to par with the storytelling of Final Fantasy and other RPGS, but it's got it's own specialness to it.

I agree to that one. "Transformed by the light of the comet." As if thousands of years of history ceased to exist.

Indeed. While not exactly under-appreciated, people need to know how awesome it is that there's a SNES era RPG that includes beautiful representations of stone age, classical and medieval Europe as well as an engaging, original and fun magic system.

I gotta second Dragon Warrior VII, Suikoden 1 and 2, Star Ocean, and Earthbound. They are all great games well worth the time spent playing them. Illusion of Gaia for SNES is also pretty good, a bit on the action/rpg side of things, but still good. You might also like 7th Saga, Brain Lord, or Arcana on SNES.

As far as PSX goes you can't go wrong with Lunar(Silver Star Story Complete or Eternal Blue), Wild Arms, Thousand Arms, Star Ocean 2, Alundra, Legend of the Dragoon, or Xenogears. The list really goes on and on for both systems, but those are the games that really stand out in my mind as being great.

Also, if you can find proper translations try Dragon Quest I+II Reprise, Dragon Quest V, and Dragon Quest VI all on SNES. There's still not a translation out for Dragon Quest III Reprise, though someone is working on it, but once it's completed you'd want that as well.

Oh yeah I forgot about Thousand Arms. The only RPG (probably) outside of Persona 3 with dating elements that does not devolve into H-game territory.

- Xenogears (A lot better than what Monolith is doing with Xenosaga, plus this game is actually a game)
No, it's not. It's a wangst ridden post-Evangelion mecha anime in RPG clothing with painfully slow text speed and shockingly bad dialogue (I am informed that this is not simply translation artifacting, it was shit in Japanese as well).

Also, the main character, Fei Fong Wong, makes Shinji Ikari look like Kamina he's that much of a whining tossbag.

It's also got the worst ending known to videogame history, when all the things that it did manage to do right on disc 1 completely disappear as soon as you put disc 2 in your playstation, to be replaced by a picture of your main character sitting in a chair telling you (in laboriously slow badly written text) about all sorts of cool shit that you are not getting to do, interspersed with occasional dungeons or boss fights that you don't care about because they are little more than a scavenger hunt for some macguffins (and one fight which throws everything, including any semblance of challenge and tension, out of the window for a Macross 7 reference. Except even Basara is a more tolerable main character than Fei).

Not even Macross references and a cameo of Lucca from Chrono Trigger can save Xenogears from being a steaming pile of wank.

Brave Fencer Musashi (if you can find and pay for it :\)

All of the ones I would have suggested have been posted, but if your going to play a Final Fantasy, get VI, IX and Tactics, because those are the only ones where instead of being the extremely nihilistic undertone, you kill the extremely nihilistic undertone.

Sorry FF8 gets that one for having a game full of idiots who not only not save the future, but celebrate what a post-apocalyptic shit hole it becomes.
