This is probably the greatest mod ever made. It's everything I dared hope for and more. I was so afraid it would suck.
Try playing around with the graphics settings. I have been getting shadows from NPCs with the flashlight. I was messing around with it while waiting on dialog before getting into the test chamber and there were most definitely shadows.LoathsomePete said:There are a few nitpicks though, like I wish the shadowing was a bit better, the immersion is broken a bit when you shine a flashlight on a scientist or security guard and there's no shadow on the wall.
Uuh... why?KingTiger said:I doubt even Valve can compete with what these guys did.
Well Half-Life was supposed be the first FPS that was half way grounded in reality, so it makes sense to treat the destruction and invasion as a little more macabre than most other games would.Woodsey said:Uuh... why?KingTiger said:I doubt even Valve can compete with what these guys did.
OT: It's good. Very good. Some of the additional music is oddly melancholy, however.
It's been added for the mod though, hasn't it? Doesn't really fit, especially with the other tracks. Nor does it occur at natural times. It started playing it when I was creeping past the three tentacled fucker that smacks the walkways in the silo.Triforceformer said:Well Half-Life was supposed be the first FPS that was half way grounded in reality, so it makes sense to treat the destruction and invasion as a little more macabre than most other games would.Woodsey said:Uuh... why?KingTiger said:I doubt even Valve can compete with what these guys did.

Edit: that's the thing about Black Mesa. I don't see it as a mod. I see it as a full fucking game.
Well the other tracks are supposed to serve background to large fight scenes with Marines and Tanks. So naturally they'd be more uptempo.Woodsey said:It's been added for the mod though, hasn't it? It's still jarring and out of pace with the tone. I don't think that stuff works great either , but it's better than the attempts to try and make things poignant. The series has always been more unnerving and slightly creepy than it ever has sad or melancholy.Triforceformer said:Well the other tracks are supposed to serve background to large fight scenes with Marines and Tanks. Wish I could find the video, but in HL1, the Black Ops had some supreme jiggle physics.Mr.Tea said:What did you have while you were playing HL1 and where can I get some?

I mean, I've only completed three chapters, but WOW! That mod is atmospheric as hell! Like, in Half-Life, you just kind of plod through the trashed facility in Unforeseen Consequences, like "Huh, so yeah, this sucks." But now... I mean, you really start to feel sad and scared for all your fellow employees! Like, your really want to save them! Especially that woman in the elevator, and kudos to the voice actress, because that just hit me like a sack of bricks.
The atmosphere is really terrifying as well. The first time I heard a zombie breathing, I almost shit myself. I could gush about this thing for hours, and I've only played three chapters!
Hey everybody! These guys are gamers and they have Macs! Let's point and laugh!Evil Smurf said:Me too, only I don't have a friend with it.Amgeo said:Mac. Sad times. A friend of mine will be downloading it soon, so I plan on joining him on this journey.
