Today, I am going to see just how much all of you know about this medium's history. This question is easy, but there are still some rules. Actually, just one: Don't Google/wiki/look it up. It's either you know it or don't. And if you don't, take a wild guess and discuss it.

The first question is:

What marketing technique prevented the SEGA Saturn from being shut out by the PlayStation in Japan?

Answer: Segata Sanshiro

CURRENT QUESTION:

So, what video game character was inspired by a missing piece of pie?

I will reveal the answer later, till then, keep it honest and even discuss it if you must.

The Shmups, they were a dime a dozen on the Saturn in Japan, and they were very popular.

No net searching here, I just hope I'm right.

EDIT: Actually i didn't read the question right, it's was the kung fu badass Segata Sanshiro's adverts which increased the popularity of the Sega Saturn in Japan.

I did not look this up seriously, I just remembered. Reading so much into videogames really does pay off sometimes.

A significant amount of this medium's history happened before I was born (1992). So by your definition, no, I don't know the medium at all.

Do you live in England, if so you can buy Retro Gamer magazine.

I even have the rare handbooks, which are crammed with all sorts of info with such depth.

With the help of those books, I now know the backlog, and history of obscure consoles, and computers like the Atari Jaguar, or a BBC Micro.

Needless to say, I take my hobby very seriously, and I know a hell of a lot.

History is the most important thing in this medium. Look at Nintendo. Hell, look at SEGA and the glorious Genesis. Amazing things like why SNES soundtracks were generally better than Genesis soundtracks are amazing tidbits that show how deep the console war used to go.

It was a marketing campaign which included huge Lizards!! But then Godzilla saw the advertisement and how it was a generalisation of the lizard people, that's why he attacked Japan and made it the way he wanted.
Seariously I have no idea -.-

I've just re edited my post with Segata Sanshiro's adverts.

Am I correct?

I thought playing the games was to be honest. Leave producers to deal with the past, it doesn't affect me (for gaming at least). My friend would likely know the answer as he knows mostly all the history, but I never got the impression that it's "the most important thing in this medium". He taught me a bit about the video game crash and what not, but for me, it's not important. I'm not saying it's wrong or I disagree with your like of the game's history, just the fundamentally "the most important thing" bit.

Wasn't it that the SNES could use real samples for music while the Genesis could only do Frequency Modulation?

Correct, kind of. With the SNES, you could compose by mixing samples. Where as the Genesis, you actually had to know what to do when composing. Examples can be found when comparing the TMNT games or my favorite one, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVYx0OgWdbE

I'm not sure if either of these is the answer you're looking for, but here's two factors that led to its demise:

When the Saturn was announced at E3 in 1995, the head honchos at Sega made a fuss about how accessible the price was going to be for the new console. Right after their speech Sony's representative came up and simply rattled off the price for the Playstation, which was a full $100 or so cheaper.

Also, Sega rushed the console to market months ahead of schedule in an attempt to beat the Playstation's launch date. Unfortunately they failed to mention this to third-party publishers, and it gave Sony time to fine-tune their own launch and learn from the Saturn's mistakes.

EDIT: Whoops, took too long to compose my post. Oh well.

I like how knowledge of advertising in another country of an almost failure of a system is what supposedly determines our "knowledge of the medium". :p

What now defunct company from California made a living by translating niche RPGs for NA and paved the way for deluxe editions?

This one I don't think you could get even IF you googled it. Still, no googling.

I don't know if either are defunct but I'm guessing NISA or Xseed.

Without using Google, I'm going to say Working Designs. I may have the wrong name, but it was the company that localized the Lunar games.

Correct!

Working Designs was the company to patent the collector's edition by throwing in such gifts as stickers and CD's.
