I think the first Diablo is better. There, I've said it. Deal with it.
They were both better than D3.

I loved Diablo 1, and the reason I think D2 is better is because they really didn't change too much, or remove too much, and the added variety, story and boarder gameplay.

I think it's a no-brainer that D2 is better than D1, I mean a cheeseburger is better with cheese than without cheese - despite being a burger, either way.

I loved Diablo 1, but going back after D2 it just strikes me as being a bit of a basic, arcade'y level-descent game which, although amazing, is not as entertaining as D2.

I adore D2. I loved every inch of every map, I loved every line of dialogue, I loved every enemy, every ally, every mercenary, every spell and all the weapon models apart from the crystal swords - which just looked sissy.

I loved the cinematics, i loved the themes, I loved the zones and their music, I loved the atmosphere, I loved it all.

I loved ALL of those things in Diablo 1 just as much, only difference is there were more things about D2 that I *could* love.
What if I don't like cheese? More doesn't mean better.

A tip for you OP. Don't get confused by the 5s and 6s. They look almost the same with the way the font works.

The first Diablo did have its warts, but it certainly had an atmosphere that had never been recaptured by its sequels, or from practically any "dark fantasy" game. Diablo II had greatly improved mechanics, but it was missing that dread and steady slip into insanity, not to mention that WTF ending that surprised damn near everybody. While I prefer D2, I still have to nod that Diablo certainly still has something over its successors.

Diablo III. Yeah. What could be the "greatest game evar." That explains why I'm still playing this season's ladder.

EDIT: The forums still have regulars who will give straight answers to straight questions. I happen to be one, although the forums have been quite quiet since D3's release. Just don't forget that while the game is awesome fun in multiplayer, it is supposed to be a single player game.

I think you are a radical hip dude, man, broseph, yo yo.

(...This IS a bit of an equivalent to going up to your Mum with a picture you drew and asking her to compliment it y'know.)

Google opinions will say, Good game, will play lots and lost my soul to it.

Enjoy the game. D2 is my favorite in the series and was a great improvement over D1 (IMO). Reasons:

Skill Trees
Classes more varied
Lots more loot, monsters and locations
Plot was simple but well told in the cut-scenes (and unobtrusive to the game)
Graphics were better and easier to tell what was going on (D1 is too dark especially in levels 5-8)

the only thing I preferred in D1 was the overall atmosphere with the music/graphics combination. But this would not be easy to achieve in the bigger game of D2.

D3 is not terrible by any stretch - but it didn't feel like it improved greatly on D2 in the way D2 did on D1. I prefer D2's skill tree system and loot - it felt like D3 replaced it, not because they had a better system, but just to be different.

Also; if you like D2 then Torchlight 2 is very similar (in a good way) and worth checking out.

... I just had a brief look through this thread and at no point is the OP in any way associated with a 5 or a 6 >.>
He means in-game.

Since OP just started playing.

'Tis alright, I suppose. I burned out on D2, so I doubt I'll play it again (also, the reason why I didn't get D3). I certainly wouldn't stop others from playing it, though - whatever floats your boat.

I don't think that strategy guide will help you, though - if it's for the vanilla version it certainly wouldn't - the patches rejigged everything - the 1.10 one in particular was a large game changer (pun intended). Well, it mostly made the many builds obsolete and the rest turned more boring but practical. Last patch I heard about was 1.12, I believe but I had stopped playing at that point, they may be up to 1.14-1.15 or something nowadays. Just look up builds/guides online, I remember using the ones on GameFAQs quite a lot. Or I dunno, if the Blizzard forums are inhabited and aren't a hellhole, you might try them, alternatively other specialised forums.
Yeah, unfortunately you can't summon 20 skeletons anymore :( that was what made the necro so f'ing awesome. my army vs your army Diablo. What you got *****?

generic EA/Blizzard template
I always think it's funny that EA hatred seeps into topics that have nothing to do with EA.

OT: Never played either of the first two Diablo games, and I doubt I'd be able to after playing Diablo III and Torchlight II, I think they'd just be too dated for me at this point.

D1 is great but something more(kinda like Sacred it was crazy) D2 is a tiny bit hollow and D3 wants to be Guild wars but can't get out of the shallow end of the short bus.....

Is there any website like Steam or Gog that lets you buy Diablo 1 and 2?
You can buy the battlechest off battle.net, it has Diablo 1 and 2 plus the expansion pack for 2 for 20$.

Diablo II is a lot more flexible than D3, but D3 is great for pick-up-and-play moments with close friends. The grind seems more important in the third than in the second, and the third cuts back on a lot of the second game's neat features. I was more than a little pissed when I realized the Witch Doctor wouldn't allow me to replicate the Necromancer's General build.

Just walking behind my Golem and a few Skeletal Mages in Nightmare, hoovering up items as I pass by? Good times, man. Good times.

I have a D3 Monk who's somewhere between Level 53 and 55, I just don't remember, and I haven't touched him since June. I think I'm burnt out for the time being.

Does it work on Win7? I have considered getting it.
Yes but you need to mess with the visual settings so it looks acceptable (otherwise pixel rainbows everywhere).

Also you can't use widescreen with the most recent patch because apparently it's considered "hacking" and borks up. I'm fine with 4:3, though I rarely play it anymore. I'm happy with the Torchlights, Titan Quest is still awesome, and when Grim Dawn finally comes out everything before will stand obsolete. I'm hoping.
