As the title might indicate, I have a serious issue with getting angry while gaming. While this might seem a bit general, I can trace it directly back to Modern Warfare 2. That's all I'm going to say about that game, because I bet the majority of you just sighed with a kind of "Oh god, not that game again" type of sadness.

Anyway, frustration levels rose after my experiences with it, and due to that it's transferred to other games. I now find Team Fortress 2, Halo and other such normally non-frustrating games rage-inducing.

Has anyone got any tips as to how to reduce anger levels? I mean, there's no instant rage-reducing solution, but if anyone has any type of advice it would be appreciated. Raging at the game makes me play worse and as a result rage harder, which in turn makes me play even worse, etc.

Just as a reference point: I've broken two controllers, a keyboard and my current keyboard's missing a few keys.

Remember that it's a game, and that by losing you're not less of a person, and by winning, you're no more of a person. Don't take it so seriously. something like MW2 (Or any game, really) can only make you angry if you take it too seriously (Or more seriously then it should be taken).

You aren't some MLG douche trying to win a paycheck.
Yo're a guy, sitting in his living-room (Or bed-room, or den, or wherever), playing games to have fun.
So have fun.
Screw around.
Don't do what you're supposed to.
Do something silly in game.
Just have fun.

Shut it you! RAAAAAAAAGE!

Basically this.
I understand what your going through though. Only one type of game angers me, and that's beat 'em ups. The amount of times I've raged playing SSF4 because some douchebag using Ryu beat me, even though I know I'm better (stupid, broken, overpowered character), I just sit back, take a few moments to collect myself then hunt that bastard down and kill him, his friends and his dog's mother in law!

I honestly don't think that getting angry at a video game is such a bad thing. At least you're not getting angry at an actual person right?

Personally, I try to use video games to vent my anger.

Try 10 deep breaths, and if the person you're playing against is a douche, laugh at him being a douche and rise above it.
Don't rage quit if you're losing, I can guarantee that will annoy you if they did it.

Well could you tell us how old you are? I know for me, when I was younger (13-16) I got very angry at games. But now I don't get nearly as frustrated or angry when I play online.

Just try to remember that it really is just a game. And if you start to get to aggravated, just back out for a couple rounds and regain your composure before making an ass of yourself.

1. are you keeping your blood sugar levels normal?
2. are you getting enough sleep?
3. are you playing video games more than you used to?
4. are you insisting on playing video games after the initial fun is gone?
5. are you under general stress?
6. are you experiencing frustration in things beyond video games?

If you're noticing a sudden increase in irritation, it may well be a health issue. And trust me, seemingly insignificant things can vary from person to person. I'm extremely sensitive to apparently normal hormone levels, so unless they're closely regulated, I'm a mess emotionally and physically. Typically, I just avoid things that easily aggravate me if moods are predictable.

Certain video games give me rage issues. The latest bout of rage for me was induced by NHL 11 online. The game ranks you on your record. Somehow I went like 7-2 to start when I bought it and got into a bracket I wasnt supposed to be in. The next 7 games I lost and needless to say, was fucking pissed. I just wanted to win a game after each loss to calm down but the rage kept building because I couldn't win. Finally I won a game but at that point it didn't help much.

I had to put down the game for a while. The only thing that really helped was just time away from the game. It is probably the best solution. Just take a break.

Take a deep breath, relax... continue shooting people, just take it slow.
You'll be surprised how much more easy it is to kill someone when you walk around calmly.

The solution is simple: buy a baseball bat and cheap pottery. Let the smashing commence.

But really, I'm not sure people understand what induces rage. It's not the game, it's not the people (well, sometimes it is. Stupid douchebag kids...). What makes you rage is how well you're doing. If you win several matches in a row, then by god, you're the happiest man in the game. If you LOSE several matches in a row, then you are grouchy as hell, and unless you are completely emotionless, there's no way you can calm down without venting severly. so I stand by my first sentence, untested as it is. God, I want to test it...

So, basically, use a strategy you're best with (camping, claymores, shield, etc. or just run around like a madman), find a class/weapon you rock with (and fuck those people who call you a noob. They're the ones dying, aren't they?) and win, win, win.

And if you want to try a new class, then expect to lose, and lose a lot. Because that's part of life: losing, losing some more, and then finding the winner's house and beating the shit out of them...

How about playing some offline multiplayer with some friends? I get a bit of rage with some games when I'm alone, but when I play with friends, it all just evaporates away. In fact, I have a laugh whenever I lose.

TF2 does that for me. Not (only/mainly) because my team loses, but why it loses. Because it's full of idiots. I once single-handedly held off the entire other team for a good minute or two (and I'm not even very good) and yet my team did not manage to cap a point.

Last day I played TF2. For now. I "quit" twice before. I love the game in theory. I just hate all the people playing it.

So it's not even rage at the game, rather at people through the game. And boy do I hate people anyway.

I'll get upset at games sometimes, but I know it's a game. I find my "rage" comes from the game losing it's fun value, but I get "angry" when the game get challenging and I want to beat it.

I've rage quitted many single player games, Bioshock especially after dying time after time, and Metroid Other M has me quit with some rage after a death because the game felt like making things too challenging.

I just turn the game off and play a new one or find something else to do to calm down...getting angry is fine, getting enraged is bad, yes I find there is a difference

This. You're playing it to enjoy yourself, if you enjoy winning, and you despise loosing, ask yourself why. I used to play always to win, now I don't give a fuck if I win, loose, go 30/0 or 0/30, as long as I'm having fun.

Try messing around in your games, even if it means you fail. Instead of shooting that guy with an M16, run across the rooftops, jump down in front of him, go prone and knife his shins. If you fail, just laugh it off. That's how I play, plus I think I'm actually a lot better at games for it. I do some freakishly retarded kills on COD and TF2, I sometimes fail, but I succeed a lot more than I used to.

Take a deep breath?

It's what I do when really frustrated. Then I swear. Yes, resort to swearing. It's harmless and effective.

Go play this small list of games to completion

Ninja Gaiden
Contra
Battletoads
Silver Surfer

You'll vent all possible rage, and MW2(and games in general) won't seem that hard by comparison!

Try to laugh.
Or try taking yourself out of the moment, imagine your doing something else somewhere else.
