Give yourself 9 intelligence in 101, then immediately go to Rivet City in the bottom right corner of the map and pick up the bobble head in the science lab. This gives you the maximum 10 intelligence early in the game, and means you will get more points to increase your stats with every time you level up. Helps a great deal.

OT: Just play it as you would if it were real life. At least for the first time through. Make decisions that you would make in real life. It makes it feel a little more personal as you inject your own morals and stuff into your character.
Do the main quest first because about the time you're done with all the sidequests you will have been bored by the game.

Stealth (the Sneak skill) is your best friend. Make sure you're not spotted, and get the first blow, and you can defeat just about any single enemy, regardless of your level (note: the 9mm pistol is pretty weak, look out for hunting rifles, they're common and very decent weapons).

Child at Heart makes all the kids go from aggressively hostile to you to a more neutral state. This means you can explore the area, get cool factoids from the kids, learn about their surprisingly awesome culture, and the kids are MUCH more tolerable. Plus, you get access to a special shortcut in one of the story missions, can strike "item A for item B" trades with some kids, and you can also use the local store (I'm fairly sure that you can't unless you're a Child at Heart).
You might still hate the kids if that's your predisposition, but you certainly won't go insane.
Dont go into it thinking its like any other shooter. Other than the engine it is NOTHING like oblivion, so dont let preconceptions fool you.
When hacking, if you find a set of brackets on the same line facing each other (i.e. (), [#%@] or ), select the whole thing and it will remove a dud password or replenish your allowance of guesses. Somehow I made it through 2 tutorials without learning that, then I looked at the manual one day and discovered it, but that trick helps immensely with higher level hacking.
