I bought the game yesterday, and I'm telling you that the minepedia website is going to be your best friend. Specifically, the Crafting page is a big help.

Edit: Hey, has anyone heard odd noises in caves and such? It shouldn't be monsters, I have the game set to peaceful right now while I'm getting resources and such.

I'm thinking about buying it.

If I loved the classic version, will I like the full version?
Yes, I think you'd love it. And it costs much less now than it will when it's finished. Buy now and save the cash.
I was saving up for a gun, but if it's gonna be $30 soon I guess it's better to get it now than later. I'll most likely be buying it today.

Get coal.

Coal is VERY important. You can make torches with coal, and if you don't have torches in your house to light it up, mobs might spawn in there.

You could also start a mine to get some stone. Go looking for caves so you can get some iron, gold, diamond, redstone, etc.

Remember, Creepers only want a hug!

Yeah, what ^this^ guy said.
I'm currently finding it pretty damn hard to find coal. It's getting annoying now. May just make a few wooden axes, a wooden sword and go on a massive search, don't want to lose my cabin again though...
Coal is the easiest ore to find. You can find it in the side of mountains, caves, almost anywhere!

Basic tutorial.

Explains most of the stuff you need.

I for inventory, check the Minecraft Wiki, for stuff ~ recipes.

You can make much more in Alpha, Doors, Minecarts, Tutorials, and I'd advise to get a texture pack.

I really hope that's fake. It's this kind of thing that freaks me out! :p
That sent shivers down my spine. It's only a matter of time before this thread is deleted now...

Ahh, thanks for the advice! I'm not sure a texture pack is advisable, currently playing on my iMac with a Nvidia 9400m. Not exactly the best.

I never thought it looked buying worthy. But having bought it, I am very glad I did. It seems so open.

Castles are a lot harder to build than i thought.
Does anyone have any actual castle schematics?

I read somewhere that the maximum size of the Minecraft 'level' is about 3x the surface area of the Earth...

When is the price likely to go up?

At the moment my god-awful laptop wont run minecraft, but I've played Alpha at a friends and loved it. I don't really want to buy it now though, as I have no idea when I'm going to have the money to upgrade to a half decent desktop.
You can run it in a browser, so it's pretty simple to run it on any comp you want without having to download the game to every machine you use.
