if any person says that "high school is the best years of your life" kick them in the balls!
college is the best years of your life!
Amen to that.

As for my own advice, just try to remember that high school is not the end of the world and won't even matter once you get out of it. Also just be yourself, don't fall into any crowds just because you want to fit in.

Congratulations on escaping from the most vile cesspool of humanity! High school has its own problems, but nothing is as bad as middle school. Chances are, high school will feel like paradise by comparison. As i'm sure has already been stated, don't slack off too hard. I was a total slacker my freshman and sophomore years, and it royally fucked my GPA. 4.0 junior and senior years, plus i scored a 5 on my AP english exam (that's the best score you can get), yet my slacking at the beginning of high school kept my GPA in the "no-scholarships-for-you" range.

Make sure you're 100% positive of what you stick your dick in. Trust me on that one.
I second that motion.

OT: Do your homework, take part in extra curricular activities, and have fun with your friends (in that order). Also never worry about other people getting ahead of you, this is not a race.

You guys seem really helpful about this. Thank you all for the great advice, especially the three I've listed above. Thank you all for the help. I'll remember this. I'll be reading through the advice I get throughout the day.

Btw.. why would you ask this on a gaming web site?
Because, from what I've seen, the largest demographic of this site are mature young adult males who I presumed finished high school. After looking through the responses, I stand by my assumptions.

Everyone who's commented has done me a service, even the jokers, because for the most part, they've made my day.

Rule number one. Never, EVER, EVER date anyone who goes to the same school with you. Ever. Look at it this way, if it doesn't work out, you're stuck looking at that person for kind of a long time. Don't do it.

Rule number two. Be nice to the losers. A bit of civility goes a long way, the uncool kids are usually more fun anyway, and hell, if somebody freaks out and goes Columbine on the joint, them remembering that you always said hi to them in the halls like they were a human being could very well save you life! :)

This must be a cultural thing, but would somebody mind enlightening me as to what the typical age of someone just becoming a 9th grader is? You say high school, which makes me think of when we started high school over here when we were either 12 or 13.

It was also never called a graduation. In the real world, you don't get to officially graduate from anywhere unless you've spent at least 2 years in further education. Usually by slipping your finished coursework under your tutors door an hour after the final deadline and hoping for the best....

High school sucks a major amount of balls - look forward to leaving.

If someone says "these are going to be the best years of your life", and you still think that a decade later, then you didn't study.

my tip: get through middle school and the ninth grade with little attention drawn to yourself as possible since middle school kids are pure evil. the rest of high school should be a breeze.
All the bullying I have every endured, was endured mostly in junior high with some hold over in high school. Don't stand for that shit. Tell authorities. Learn tai chi (Not something offensive that will end up with the bully's nose broken and YOU suspended, something defensive so you can get away without much harm done to you.)

On the subject of classes, take a second language. I don't know about where you're from, but where I'm from a second language is a requirement for getting into most colleges after graduating, and for graduating from said college after. Also, if you're one of those advanced placement/honors class kids, DO EACH AND EVERY PIECE OF HOMEWORK THEY ASSIGN YOU. You'll learn after a few missed assignments exactly how much you can get away with not doing and still retain a safe cushion for doing miserably on tests, but homework, aside from being practically required study time, is practically free points. Generally they'll give you most points for a homework assignment just for trying.

If you're not an advanced placement/honors kid, probably a good idea to drop out and get your GED soon as possible so you can move on to college. College Prep classes have more you'll need to unlearn than will do you any good in the world. Most notably, don't listen to a goddamn thing any College Prep U.S. History teacher tells you.

Also, the work force is saturated with people with college degrees right now, and whatever you want to do when you grow up is probably going to have numerous college educated applicants. In order to compete, you have to plan on going to college. It's not just an option for people who are awesome at school and want to be rich. It's something you pretty much have to have.

Study hard.

Pick friends wisely, 3 at max, I have trouble since I had 6 (some of them bad students, but decent people) and we all wanted to stay in the same group, and a big group is reeeaaaaaally hard to manage, so basically I had to make whole projects by myself since everyone ran away at the first sight of hard work.

Wait for the 10th grade to get a girlfriend (IMO), because then you'll have to make some schedules for school, fun and girlfriend.

Keep a low profile, everyone that you don't know wants you out of their way, or needs a squishy "friend" to release all their hormones on.

Don't do drugs or smoke or drink (obvious reason).

Re: high school advice
Take honors and AP/IB classes. Try to go outside your comfort zone, make new friends, get into new activities, that sort of thing. Get stupid requirements (like, say, Health) out of the way before your senior year. Join a club. Study hard but make time for having fun as well.

Re: the many people saying that college is easy
This is sort of true. You definitely don't spend as much time in class, but much more of your grade is based on tests, so you need to put in a lot of time outside of class to make sure you understand and can apply everything in the textbook and everything that the professor says. Taking honors/AP/IB classes in high school and learning how to study and work efficiently is very important; good preparation is what makes college "easy," not the nature of the school.

Good luck!

Me and everyone I know, barely remember high school. Its not the most important time of you life. Popularity means jack all. Make some true friends you will keep and forget everyone else.

Also, very few people marry their highschool sweetheart and have it end well. Phycologically the personality isnt set till about 25 (and changes throughout life) but you WILL NOT be the same person in Highschool or even College that you are in real life. So date your little heart out, but try to remember your a big ball of hormones.

Not too obvious.

They may look cool to some people, but they'll a) detract from your spending money, b) lessen the amount of time you can fully devote to school, c) potentially ruin your health, d) potentially kill you pretty quickly (in the case of alcohol and some drugs, especially in large quantities. If you black out, you've gone about a mile past too far), e) make things that were NEVER a good idea seem pretty nifty (This can range in severity from kissing an ugly person, to impregnating a woman, to contracting an STD, to leaving someone who just drank themselves under the table to "sleep it off" (That's how people die of alcohol poisoning))

Make friends. (also dur.)
Try to do as much extra-curricular stuff as possible (sports, artistic things like writing or drawing)
Figuring yourself out is gonna be tough but you'll work it out eventually.
Until you're sure of yourself, try to keep it just to the few people that you know you can trust, rather than stereotype yourself in the first few days with a new peer group.

Oh, and give almost everyone a second chance.
Pretty much this. The only thing I'd add is that, the first couple times you think you've figured out who you are and what you're about, you probably haven't, so don't settle on any set ideas... it's likely to change. That really doesn't come until your earlier twenties.

Yeah, a lot of figuring out exactly how much leeway you have in getting stuff done is learned in honors/advanced placement classes. College prep gives way too much busy work to actually require learning your limits, but at some point when you have a full course load of Advanced Placement classes, you'll have to figure out what you can let slide so you don't go insane of sleep deprivation. Your mileage will vary from teacher/teaching style to teacher/teaching style, but the basics of getting by with an A or B will always be there with you.

Also, with a new teacher, it's always best to prepare for the first test/midterm/whathaveyou like you think you're going to fail the class if you don't pass it. It's a good way to gauge how much effort you're going to need, and it's a lot easier to keep a grade acceptable than it is to pull it up from abysmal.
