So.... Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, thoughts?

Forgot to mention...my favorite part of any game ever was when in the second mission. Raiden has a sombrero with a little cape thing because that's how he 'blends in' in Mexico. He then claims that he is an expert in stealth ops and gets out of the car, where two actual Mexicans wearing cowbow hats see him and are like "...The fuck is that?" in Spanish.

With the wire guided Sais. I parry one, the other hits me and does like 35% damage before I can recover. Plus he starts dodging EM grenades.

Well, I knew what a Zeong was, I just didn't know what you were referring to. But now I know, the Sai thing.

For the record Revengeance is not a made up word. It is just an obsolete word (Or word form.) meaning vengeance. Wish they would have just said vengeance or taken the subtitle out entirely though.

For a longer answer: Platinum makes great games in this genre, it doesn't affect Metal Gear Solid canon in any way, and the gameplay thus far has been really fun. Those are the three reasons I hear most.

Yeah hasn't ruined the canon in any way except totally missing the point about how Raiden is supposed to be a metaphorical representation of the player in the game. It's like, Raiden sucks, because you the person playing the game sucks. That was kinda the whole sub text of MGS 2. Then in MGS 4 he was metaphorical of the most bland superficial elements of the series that people like while totally missing the sub text.

You do know the story is Hideo Kojimas own? He wrote rising and just left platinum with the gameplay.
Raiden is just as Hideo wants him to be, and his "evil side" is actually brought up in MGS2 if I recall.

Okay, no it isn't. I'm sick of people fucking saying that like it excuses anything, because it isn't fucking true, and it doesn't fucking matter. Etsu Tamari wrote this game, not Kojima. He may have signed off on it, but that doesn't make it ok, we all remember Max Payne 3; it had approval from Sam Lake, but that didn't fix the fact the story was dog shit.

And furthermore, even if Kojima did write it, I fail to see how that'd excuse the stupid shit on display in this story. George Lucas wrote the prequel trilogies, we don't give those slack just because it was directly made by the 'father' of the franchise. When I see stupid shit, I don't care what asshole it sprang from, I'm still not eating it.

The "evil side" you're saying was brought up is a delusion you're creating to justify the garbage in this game. I'm not saying MGS 2 was perfect, in fact I think the game is unredeemable and not worth playing for many reasons, but the whole Raiden thing was awesome on a pure troll level. His past as a child soldier is brought up with the references and implications of child soliders in real life who are drugged to be pavlovianly conditioned to find pleasure in killing, associating the high of the drugs with the reward of killing an enemy. Raiden didn't have a bullshit "evil side", he enjoyed killing because he was trained to, because he still felt the rush of crack hitting his brain when he spilled an enemys blood, his mind no longer needing the actual substance of whatever they used to get that same high. Does this ever get brought up in Revengaence? No. Instead we get "JACK THE RIPPER!." Inexcusable, brainless, fanfic levels of idiocy.

So the story sucks, and whatever excuse you might bring up to justify it doesn't change that. And the gameplay is nothing god damn special, just because it's P* people give it a free pass, but compared to Bayonetta, Anarchy Reigns, hell even Veautiful Joe, there's nothing substantial for this game to offer us. I don't get why fans like this game considering it's such a betrayal - story wise, and I don't get why people who don't care like it for the gameplay when the gameplay is sub par and utterly fails to hold up against its forebears and competitors.

Man, If I could marry a game, It would be this one. Hell I pre-ordered this thing before I even played the Demo, I've been waiting for this game since it was still called Metal Gear Solid: Rising, and I've been waiting to play as Raiden again since.. well, MGS2. Ugh, I could go on about how much I love Raiden all day... but dont worry, I wont... but he has just been through so much shit you know?? and its like, I wanna give him a hug...oops getting Off topic.

But yeah love this game. Though haven't beaten it yet due to BP grinding to buy Gray Fox's blade...and having my ass handed to me by Sam, well up until last night when I finally won.

What's the 'sweet spot' to parry, just before they strike? And can you parry any attack?

I don't think you can parry everything, might be wrong there. That boss fight was a pain until I started picking up how to dodge and sometimes managed to parry.

You can parry pretty much fuckin' everything. Aside from the obvious things like giant laser beams, you can even block attacks like RAY's stomp, charge; Blade Wolf's grab, and Sundowner's explosive bitchslap.

And yeah. Parry like 0.5 seconds before the attack would have landed for a perfect parry.

Blade Wolf. You sort of cut him up into a billion pieces and then make him explode. He does get repurposed and joins you as a recon unit in chapters 2+ though.

I also had problems with bladewolf at first until i figured out the basics:

Use lock on (R2/Right trigger), he won't be able to blindside you anymore

You can't parry while moving or running. If you want to parry, first move your left analog stick to neutral position, then into the direction of the attack while pressing the light attack button.

I finished this game last night and as a huge disciple of Metal Gear and Kojima productions in general I have to say I was very impressed at Platinium Games's ability to capture the essentials of the series while taking it in a new direction. I plan to actually write up a review on it in the near future schoolwork willing. But If you are a Metal Gear fan/hack and slash fan it is definitely worth picking up.
