So my third 360 has died...

And yet people still call it better than the PS3. Anyway, rivalries aside I have a slight problem in the matter. A couple of days ago my Xbox began freezing randomly, so like a good little boy I began to google the problem to find clues. Turns out it's either:

(a) A problem with the hard drive, which it isn't...
or
(b) The RROD... but my console isn't displaying the dreaded light of shame.

So now I'm faced with a problem, it's out of warranty by a few months, (up yours Microsoft on that one) but I have a friend who recently got the RROD for the third time as well and Microsoft replaced it for him free of charge despite his also being out of warranty. I've heard that wrapping the Xbox in towles and leaving it on can temporaily fix the RROD, but does it cause it as well? And if so, would it leave any trace for Microsoft that it had been forced?

Before anyone tries to raise the point that it is dishonest I would like to counter that by saying that the problem IS the RROD, but as many know Microsoft made it more difficult for the problem to trigger in order to save the money they were losing. Plus they deserve it for making such terrible hardware, and this is the third Xbox I've bought. I don't intend on buying another.

I used the towel method and it worked but over using it will just destory your system. So i say send it to Microsoft they did extend the warranty for 3 years and if you have passed that then who knows

Maybe you shouldn't leave it on for 15 hours at a time, then...

We get about ten of these threads a month. We don't care that your 360 had a hardware malfunction. People's PS3's get hardware malfunctions as well. Honestly, I'm just waiting for someone to show up with a malfunctioning Wii hardware thread.

The towel trick is really a hit-and-miss. It might work, it might not. You have no way of knowing.

Here is a tip, sell it while it still works. Sell it, your controllers, and all your games nad add-on junk. Then buy a PS3 and not have to worry about it breaking. Use any excess cash on games and hookers.
Most of the games are the same and the PS3 has (in my opinion, last bit added to avoid fanbois flaming me like a Tank in L4D) a better line-up of exclusives. You don't get quite as many games, but that is because the PS3 was late in the game and most of the games you can get for 360 and not PS3 are also on PS2.

This unit is just over a year old, but didn't Microsoft only extend the warranty for the RROD? That's my problem, although it is an RROD problem the console isn't actually showing the ring.

My 360 worked well on for a few years, it got one E:74, and a week later the disc tray stopped reading CD's, DVD's, and game discs all together, they fixed it all together and everything was gravy.

EDIT:

Actually there are plenty of errors a 360 can get, my brother had something similar and it wasn't the RROD.

No for any malfunctions that the 360 has and either way from the sounds of it your 360 is about to get RROD

Or you could just send it in and pay $50 bucks or whatever to fix it.

The cheap and best alternative.

Do what my friend did.

Keep sending it in, and rack up those free months of XBOX LIVE! ^^

He has 12 months from his ventures with Microsoft Support.

Already have a PS3, and a Wii to boot.

well, I'm afraid I have you beat on breaking 360s, I actually managed to go through 3 "microsoft refurbished" 360s in a single night... I think it's obvious why I own a ps3.

Then just sell it and spend the money on better hookers then :p.
Or purposefully RROD it so you can get a new one for free. Turn it on and leave it on for a few nights and see it if survives.

If I ever bought a console the first thing I'd do is take it apart and upgrade the cooler and clean/reseat all the heatsinks with arctic silver. You void the warranty, sure- but you'll never have to worry about over-heating and RROD if you know what you're doing.

as a heart attack. went to gamestop last year just after christmas, they had 3 microsoft refurbished 360s, I picked one up and a copy of bioshock: went home, plugged it in, loaded it up and it froze right after I got through the bathysphere, tried turning it back on, it ran fine for a second and froze again.

took bioshock back thinking it might be the disc, got a new copy... same thing...

went through all 3 systems, finally got my money back and said "hey, at least I tested em for ya, right?"

I know what it is, it could be the power brick, my RROD was a problem with the power brick, any xbox hooked into it would get the RROD and when my xbox was hooked into a friends brick it worked fine.

Why the hell doesn't Microsoft tell people about the possibility of a power brick problem anyway? that's probably where half of these serial failures are coming from.
