Three games got my attention recently and I'm a bit of a bind as to which one of the three deserve my hard earn money

-Fallout: New Vegas (although I didn't play fallout 3)
-Red Dead Redemption
-Prototype

Usually am a RPG fan (mostly of the bioware variety, oblivion was meh to the point of frustration), storyline a pretty big thing but an action filled and fun gameplay is pretty important, but sandox come second in my library

... Don't get prototype.

Red Dead Redemption is Grand Theft Horse. Very very nice (GOTY award after all)

Don't get prototype

Fallout: New Vegas is good (never played it), buggy, like any other Bethesda game, not really the kind of guy you should ask.

Don't get prototype. The story sucks, the challenges are fucking impossible (If you have OCD, you will die). The game itself is pretty good, nice gameplay, nice bosses, but just too damn hard. Absolutely no replay value, unless you want the trophies/cheevos (Took me 2 playthroughs, 10 rage quits and 2 months to get all the trophies, and I've never touched the game ever since).
If you like killing senselessly and getting your balls ripped off by the final boss, go get it, the game is a challenge.

EDIT: If you're getting the PC version of Prototype, controls sucks, and it takes a while to get used to. I got it for the PS3, and it was smooth.

New Vegas is a complete game. It also has a self contained story. How did you reach that conclusion?
OP: Get New Vegas. It is a lot more story/faction oriented than Oblivion or FO3.

Prototype's story is rather average, though with some nice touches, like the 'web of intrigue' feature which explains most of the back story. However the gameplay is good - very fast and fluid and awesome in the scale of destruction unleashed. I liked it a lot.

Not Prototype. Maybe flip a coin between the other two (unless you plan on getting New Vegas for console. If so, just get Red Dead.)

Red Dead is probably my favourite of these, apart the kinda sleepy Mexico chapter.

Prototype was a bit meh, neither great nor especially bad.

I couldn't get into NV but many consider it a great game, if you can avoid the bugs that is.

So, if you prefer RPGs go for NV, I Guess.

As I said, I've never played it, and the little bits I got from the reviews I've read is that the game is "complete" to some extent, but they actually took part of the sandbox just to sell it like a DLC. If this is not correct, I'll erase my bit on my previous post.

I've never heard that. I also never noticed gaps in the map or missions that might be missing. Honestly, I wouldn't be that surprised. But it is a full game that has a story that wraps up.

New Vegas.

You don't need to play Fallout 3 (completely unrelated plot and setting, except for the apocalypse), and NV was developed by Obsidian (not Bethesda).

Now, on one hand that means the game will be pretty buggy (I only hit a few bugs on my 77 hour PC playthrough, so your mileage may vary). On the other hand, they can actually write. Obsidian has a lot of people from Black Isle, the developer behind the original Fallout games as well as Planescape: Torment. The plot, the characters and the factions are actually good, which sets it apart from FO3 and Oblivion.

Prototype is kind of meh.

[sub]As for Red Dead Redemption, well, I haven't played it. GTA-style games don't interest me much.[/sub]

Red Dead was one of the best stories in a game I have ever played. Prototype was amazingly fun, if only because I got to pretend I was the Tick.

This fellow is... embellishing Prototypes low quality. It is actually a decent game but Red Dead and New Vegas will give you a lot more bang for your buck. I would personally go with Red Dead if I were you as it is the highest quality game on the list and all the bugs are either very minor or absolutely hilarious. New Vegas on the other hand will crash on you every now and again. Let me rank them for you in three categories according to my experience.

Most Stable:
1)Prototype
2)Red Dead Redemption
3)Fallout: New Vegas

Hours of Gameplay:
1)Fallout: New Vegas
2)Red Dead Redemption
3)Prototype

Overall Quality:
1)Red Dead Redemption
2)Fallout: New Vegas
3)Prototype

New Vegas seems to have the most you are looking for. RDR is pretty linear.

Red Dead Redemption. Or save up a bit more and get L.A. Noire in two weeks.
Feel a bit wee bit too divided to make a good descision(except not taking prototype), but I do enjoy the 30's more than western.

Late 40s. 1947 to be exact. The main character, Cole Phelps, is a World War II vet.

Get Fallout: Prototype Redemption. It was nominated for a couple GOTYs last year.

i enjoyed prototype for what it was, just stupid and mindless killing. i liked the game overall but i would make one change to what you said. i wouldnt say prototype is hard. hard is often good. demon's souls was hard and it was an amazing game. prototype is just plain frustrating. some of the missions toward the end of the game made me want to snap my controller in half and im surprised my neighbors werent filing complaints against me, because of me shouting at my game every night. the end boss was strangely easy though
