When a game's entire reason for being is online multiplayer and you wanna play a game with your friends and their friends but don't actually care that much about games specifically and care more for doing something with your friends in general, something like CoD which is spread out enough that the most people possible will have some experience with it becomes the best bet.

So, it's not exactly peer pressure but it is sorta due to your friends and their friends all having it.

I'm not getting either. While Battlefield's environmental destruction is interesting, I'm not gonna pay $60 for a game that I can't access half the content of. With games all going online, I'm left with slow 3G and can't do much of anything anymore. I'm waiting for Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and Skyward Sword.

Me! I don't really dig the whole realistic thing most popular shooters are these days. It's unappealing to me. I'm more of an action/RPG kind of person, though I do have a few FPSes in my library that I do enjoy. They just involve colorful environments and aliens.
Yep, same here. I don't see the big deal behind "realistic" stuff. I play games. I want as mad as you can get.

For Further discussion value: What would you like to see added to/ Changed in FPS's
I don't play FPSs due to social pressure. Granted, that's how it started - but that was with Counter Strike a long time ago. Once I had discovered Battlefield however, a gaming love was born. It's one of my top franchises of all time and definitely the favourite FPSs ever made. The vehicles, the team work, I've always loved all of it.

Battlefield 3 returned a lot of what I loved about the franchise that was missing from BFBC2, but also came back with a number of fantastic improvements. I really have to hand it to DICE on making a brilliant game. I ain't gonna sugarcoat it, it came out with some bugs and laggy servers, but then again, I expect that of most titles these days and frankly, I've seen faster fixes and improvements than on any other game I've ever got. Only a few days into it and most of my main issues are gone, nothing gamebreaking is still there and the servers are starting to be stable 95% of the time (easy enough to hop on another server when they're not).

That said, what would I liked to see added to/changed? Well, I'd like to see larger maps still, preferably, once the technology advances a bit, offering room for even more players (although having 64 player servers back is great for now). I'd like to see the return of invasion maps (like the Operation Irving in BF: Vietnam), especially those where one side is completely separated from the other and must gain foothold (I miss beachhead maps too, but I guess war just isn't really waged that way anymore) and naval combat maps like Iwo Jima in the original BF1942.

What I'd like to see more than anything though is a Battlefield-esque game with an MMO-like PvE. Might as well be an MMO actually (though we're a long way from a real, fully fledged MMOFPS [I know some are in the making - I just don't think any of them will qualify for the 'real' part just yet]). What I mainly want to see though is a large scale co-op, where a number of players team up and work together for a common objective, like they would in MMO raids. It's not like it'd be too hard to realise either, invasion of a city with NPCs defending is pretty much it, with the main objectives being taking out the key strategical points.

He was more pointing out that that isn't the only reason people buy these games. If it were, I wouldn't have BF3 as only I and one other friend plays it, everyone else is a CoD fanboy that follows the mentality you just described.

What I would like to see in FPS is BF3 engine in a 2142 setting. An amazing looking futuristic environment that can fall apart all around you and a nice sound engine alongside - as well as a constantly active multiplayer and some good balance (BF3 here, not 2142. There were a few discrepancies I had with that game...).
That or a medieval one with Swords and Trebuchets and bows... With the BF3 engine so things will fall apart, it will look absolutely stunning, it will sound amazing... Oh, that would be something I'd buy without a second thought. Oooh, and if done, let us have the 256 player limit instead of the 64. That would be amazing. Unfortunately, I foresee this never happening as the player limit requires good hardware, and that is something consoles don't have. And of course, every game these days has to cater to consoles somewhat, and they can't do that sidebrush thing BF3 did where it gave them the same game with reduced graphics and a 28 player limit, as 28 players wouldn't be NEAR entertaining when attacking a massive castle. It'd just feel empty.

But yeah, I think FPSs have well and truly got their gameplay styles downpat, now try for some different themes, not just Modern Warfare and WW2, and it would be a lot more entertaining.

I bought BF3, well it's been ages since BF2... BF3 is overdue, and deserves a lot of recognition for being awesome. I got sick of BadCompany1 and 2 pretty quickly, BF3 is more like BF2 than bad company I think. Put this way, my BFP4F(Battlefield Play4Free) stopped working last week, which annoyed me up until Friday when I got BF3, now I don't miss it, BF3 is filling that SVD-sniping-douchebag void.

I will be buying Skyrim as well, and more - I like to mix it up when I buy games, BF3 is a great online shooter, it plays just how I like, with some strategy and decent sniping and great game mechanics. People these days are hypercritical, its tiring, and lets be honest here - we've all had some pretty damn great games this year and with more on their way, we should cut the developers some slack.

I'm not. I'm not a huge fan of the whole ultra-realistic warfare thing really; if they had the same gameplay with a different setting, I'd consider it.

I'm not, but it's because I loathe "realistic shooters". Give me Halo (without the fanbase, though) anyday.
And going back to Quake-style with healthpacks and multiple weapons would be nice too.

Me. Those kind of games leave me cold. I'll be having much more fun sinking my time in to Forza 4, Skyrim and Skywards Sword thank you very much.

He's not saying that the only reason people buy these games is peer pressure. He's saying that some people on the fence who would be perfectly happy to continue playing last year's iterations of the series will buy the new ones because all of their friends they play with move onto CoD2011 and BF2011. Incidentally, I fall into this group when I have time to play.

I won't be buying either one or Skyrim because I don't have enough free-time to devote to it and if I'm only going to have a couple hours a week to play, then I might as well wait until the price drops before I spend any money at all. Don't get me wrong, CoD2011 looks to have some neat new features for multiplayer and I'm sure BF2011 has something (I'm not a huge fan of the BF series, I had fun sometimes and other times got spawn-trapped by eight snipers who are effectively invisible because they're in all tan on a tan backdrop). Skyrim looks pretty cool, I'm intrigued by the Radiant Story thing, and it's the definition on an open-world fantasy RPG.

I might have picked BF3 up if a) it ever goes on a significant sale (it won't), or b) There wasn't a ton of amazing games coming out this month anyway.

Who knows, I might pick it up if I get some friends playing, but I'm not too fussed.

Already did the redbox thing to play through Battlefield 3's single player and unless someone gets MW3 for me as a gift or something I forsee the same scenario for it. I'm not big on playing multiplayer (co-op or competitive) with people I don't know, and the friends I do have who play MW3 are.....pretty annoying when they're playing. Not really the most compelling reason for me to join them and all that.

Besides. Today is Uncharted, Skyrim is next week, Assassin's Creed and Halo Anniversary the week after, Skyward Sword after that. Plenty of equally good titles to choose from that I'm actually interested in.

Well to use an old post:
Most fps titles are pretty bland to me, so I don't play them. I especially don't like the big boys of the fps genre (COD and BF), because they are masterfully bland (imo)and I hate military shooters. I stick with my action/adventure genre and RPG genre to and I enjoy games from these genres tremendously so I don't need to ***** about what I don't like. I say screw you to both COD:MW3 and BF3 because I'm getting Uncharted 3! Adventure games like uncharted have much better story, writing, and gameplay (imo) and while some people hate it, I love it because it has a great single player story. Multiplayer for Uncharted 2 was fun also, way more fun to me than any COD of BF game so I buy what I enjoy. Also AC:revelations, AC; Brotherhood multiplayer was a blast so I get that to. You COD and/or BF payers should keep playing your war shooter if that's what you like, and continue to have fun with it and I sincerely hope you do since you spent money on it.

simply refuses to bow to social pressure
How do you get socially pressured into buying a game? why am I reminded of those old videos they played in early high school saying "just say no, peer pressure's not a joke".

As for your question.. well, I will actually be getting Battlefield 3, but it's low on my priority list under saints row the third for just one example.

I find games like that fun because I enjoy them, not because "it's the in thing" or "because all my mates want me to play with them" and if you really feel that way.. idk what to say mate.

As for improving the genre, idk I wouldn't say Battlefield and CoD encompass the FPS genre, they're just a sub genre within the FPS genre.
But if your question is actually "what would I like to see changed in realistic military FPS's" which would make more sense, my answer would honestly be "Battlefield 3 is pretty much all I want from that kind of game, there isn't really anything I can think of to improve it beyond making the single player more of a tutorial for the multiplayer rather than just a filler to make the game worth more.

Ok, so it's equal season and half of my XBL and PSN friends list is playing BF3. I have no doubt that the other half will be playing MW3 when that's released. I just wanted to know who else isn't really that keen on either and simply refuses to bow to social pressure. While I like my FPS as much as the next guy/girl I'm just a little tired of the modern iteration.

For Further discussion value: What would you like to see added to/ Changed in FPS's
bow to social preasure? who the hell actually buys a game because of social preasure? has that ever happened?

.....its funny though I finf alot of FPS's bland (especially ones with a realistic setting) and Im not a fan of multi

but O got battlefeils 3...on a whim, just to see if I could get into a true multiplayer game....so yeah..Ive become on of THEM (mabye thats what your talking about.."this game is aparently huge, mabye Ill check it out")

anyway FPS with a creative setting a good story (bioshock abd half life..there you go)

I'll probably get BF3 6 months to a year from now when it's being sold at half price or cheaper. Maybe this Christmas if Steam has it at a good discount for the holiday sale.

I have nothing against the big FPS franchises but I only pay top dollar for games I feel are worth it such as Arkham City (pre-ordered), Diablo 3 CE (pre-ordered), Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Inifite and Guild Wars 2.

I'd love to pre-order Skyrim but Bethesda releases tend to be quite buggy the first month or two. I think I might wait for a GOTY that includes all the horse armors they release :p. On a more serious note, I'd also like to give the modding community time to build up some content. The best Oblivion dungeons and quest lines I've played came from the community, not the devs.

I'm not either. After I realized that I can't have fun playing online multiplayer in an FPS. I get too competitive and angry and then I have to shut the game off. I'm supposed to be playing games for fun.

I'm not planning on buying either. But that's 'cos I'm not a huge FPS fan to begin with. I need some kind of hook (like horror elements, being a jedi, part of a verse i like the lore of etc) to be persuaded to buy one.

Plus I play games more for the single than the multiplayer. Yes I am aware this makes me some kind of freak. :p and no, I don't care.
