For me it's not a matter of how good I would feel, it's how I come across to other people. Alcohol does not make for good conversation and drunk people are not fun to be around. Ever.
Some of the best (albeit least-focussed and somewhat rambling) conversations I've had have been conducted over a few cans of beer, and slightly merry, uninhibited people are often a complete blast to be around. A little alcohol can be a great social lubricant - but yeah, obnoxiously drunk people are generally a chore to be around, especially if they're significantly drunker than you are. Everything in moderation.

And for the record, either the OP is exaggerating for comic effect or should consider cutting back on the booze a bit.

Think it sucks the most when your at party. I have a friend who doesn't drink and he just stays in the corner and glares at people. We get really drunk and get our pictures taken with the saddest man in the world.
Yeah - conversely, being sober doesn't mean you have to be the fuckin' Grinch. I was teetotal for a full year, and when I went clubbing or to parties I just drank cola or Red Bull and pretty much acted drunk. I still had a great time (and got to remember the whole night, didn't throw up on the way home, and got to remind my friends of the silly things they did while drunk after the event).

Hell no. You're obviously biased and so am I, but I don't like being drunk unless... well, no.. even in social situations it generally only helps me creep people out, get loud, and be more stupid. I'd much rather be sober even then. All the rest of the time, SOBER PLEASE. I can't stand not having all my motor functions. I've been drunk a few times and generally thought it was just... odd. Curious. Silly, maybe. But it improved nothing.

Same with being high, energized (caffeinated) or any other alternate state of mind. No, thanks, I'll keep my stability.

Edit: perhaps I should mention before someone rips me a new asshole or something, I'm NOT a social guy. I hate going out to bars. I think my generation's idea of a "party" (get drunk and talk/flirt or whatever) is the most boring and obnoxious thing ever. If I had to choose between going out to a bar and wasting tons of money on nasty alcohol (seriously, beer is flavored like piss. Piss IS the flavor of beer. How does ANYONE like that?), forcing myself to socialize, or to stay at home and play some games or get some work done, I'd much rather do the latter.
I'm... not entirely against socializing, especially with people I share experiences and likes/dislikes with. My gamer friends are almost entirely non-drinking people, though. We get together and talk and play nerdy stuff. That's MY form of socializing, and it's both fun and completely devoid of alcohol. I see no need to make myself stupid in the head to make conversations more interesting...

No. I like being able to think, recall, talk and otherwise act like a reasonable person.
Other than these things, I don't like being dizzy. Having my equilibrium messed with hugely annoys me. That and the fact that I've never encountered an alcoholic beverage that tasted good has kept me sober in terms of drink. As for the other stuff...I've never seen the appeal in smoking, I dislike popping pills (especially since the ones I take for medicinal reasons don't seem to do anything anyway) and, I hate needles. I fucking hate needles. The worst part of all though are the people. The only people I've known who are into that sort of escapism are the kinds of people I would...avoid...to put it as nicely as possible.

Lotto whinin in this thread. Getting drunk is fun. Sobriety is overrated, and the most irritating thing about teetotalers is there self important 'i'm better than you because I don't drink' mentality. Stop taking life so seriously.

I have one hell of a hangover. I'm gonna watch shit tv, and smoke.
What I don't like is the people who depend on mind-altering drugs to enjoy life telling me I'm missing out on some magical train ride to Charlie's Chocolate Factory or something. I've given drinking a try. I've been drunk on multiple occasions. It's NEVER fun, and I'm not the kind of guy who enjoys that stuff. I was in a fraternity for a year and they partied all the time and it annoyed the ever-loving hell out of me. The only reason I subjected myself to that was so many people like yourself telling me what is and isn't right, that there can't possibly be a person who has a differing opinion from theirs and honestly doesn't enjoy getting drunk, rowdy and "partying," to where I thought that was just the truth and I just needed to learn to like it/live with it.

Drunkness is what is overrated. You stumble over things, vomit and make a massive fool of yourself everywhere you go. You seem to need to throw money at an overpriced, nasty beverage to enjoy yourself.

That said, I generally just let drunks be drunks and get on with life. I don't get why you do what you do, but who gives a damn what you do, as long as you don't keep me up at 3 AM blasting music at your apartment because WHO CARES LOL UR DRUNK!!! I'm otherwise a pretty tolerant guy. It's just that you need to show some tolerance of your own. People like different things. It's a fact of life.

Being drunk and sober are both good.

I remember spending '07 NYE drunk as a fucking fart, a good bloody night it was and all. I then spend '08 NYE completely sober, this was also a bloody good night.

Basically, I love being drunk, it is fun, but I can also get a good night from being sober too. I don't really care that OP wants to be a piss head.

I dont really drink, last time I had a drink was at a wedding last year. Guess I'm no fun and think I'm better than other people? :p
What I hate about drinkers is them thinking people who DON'T drink are doing it because they want to kill people's buzz. I don't enjoy drinking, both my parents are alcoholics, but that doesn't mean I look down on people who do drink.

Why get drunk when I can watch OTHER people make asses out of themselves?

That's so much more fun.

After seeing how some people act while drunk, I have very little desire to drink. I'm practically sober at this point. I really only drink socially and even then rarely get more than tipsy. Honestly, I never really enjoyed being drunk all that much. Not any more than I enjoyed being sober, anyway.

Yeh, see...this is the problem with discussing alcohol consumption on a youth orientated forum.

I'll happily have a drink with older people, I won't drink with the 18-25 crowd. You don't have a "cool and relaxed" attitude to life, no matter how much you insist that you do. "Keep up", "don't be a party pooper", "down it!", "what are you drinking red-wine for? You gay?".

What's with the rules? Fuck you! I'm trying to relax here.

As long as you have a ritualistic attitude towards drinking, you'll irritate the shit out of me. I don't want to compete to see who can get the most drunk, or do Sambuca shots, or vodka mixed with energy drink so that I can fight my natural urge to sleep.

A night out drinking is entirely predictable. It's not wild and crazy, it's organised and has obvious outcomes.

At 25, I don't drink much anymore, because I don't want to...I get tired of justifying this to the "cool and relaxed" drinkers. You know, those people who are completely about free-choice yet somehow get arsey when anyone doesn't do what they do.

... I have enough trouble self-censoring myself to the point where people find me palatable without intoxication being a factor. Since I've abstained from drinking, my relationships are less complicated and more rewarding, and my wallet is considerably fatter.

I'm just waiting for my friends to get as thoroughly bored of it as I am.

True.
I can see few situations in my daily life (aside from school and serious events) that would be made worse by some kind of drug.
I'm generally not very sociable sober.

Of course, that's only true in some sort of hypothetical world where you don't get used to things and alcohol is dirt cheap.
Intoxication is only great because you've got sobriety to compare it to. If you were constantly intoxicated, it'd lose the novelty pretty fast.

I have come to the conclusion that sobriety sucks. Not just the Straight Edge notion of absolute sobriety that some of you here know I used to subscribe to. Being sober in any situation that does not absolutely require it sucks. There is never a situation where I think "damn, I wish I was sober right now" but there are plenty where I think "damn, I wish I wasn't sober right now".

Does anybody here feel the same way?

Also, it feels appropriate to post this here:

I on the other hand, prefer my liver fully intact and my license clean.

Hey genius, look up the definition of 'teetotal'. Also, where did I say teetotalers are no fun? Oh wait I didn't, and that is just pure hyperbole.
I guess I got `no fun` from `stop taking life so seriously`, as in, if you take life so seriously, you're no fun.
I'm not quite sure where you got the idea that people who don't drink do so because they take life too seriously.
I would consider myself practically teetotal, I dont ever get drunk. I sometimes drink WKD because I like the taste.

Couldn't disagree with you more, parties and the like bore me, I just don't find any kind of fulfilling enjoyment in drink since I hit twenty. Though I could be wrong I assume I've just grown up. Now I do enjoy a casual drink with friends, but I just don't get the appeal of drunkenness.
I see it all too much in university, people seem to pass life in a drunken haze, never getting anything out of it. It's a mindless waste of time.
That's not to say I don't enjoy a good time, but I'd much prefer watching a movie, or going places, seeing things, actually experiencing life.

Your pulling all kind of bullshit interpretations out of your ass now. Jesus. 'Stop taking life so seriously' is nothing more than a statement to that effect. Just chill out and do whatever you damn well please, if you don't wanna drink, cool, but don't pretend your better than me because you don't drink.

I am too hungover to play with kids, go back to nursery.
Oh, lol. My whole point is that I never said I was better than you at all, and I dont care if people drink or not. What's your deal with that?

Just a small note; you can't be "practically teetotal". Either you don't drink any alcohol whatsoever, or you're not a teetotaller. There isn't really anything inbetween.
Well, I have about 2 WKD's a year. Perhaps teetotal isn't the right word, but if people ask me if I drink, I generally say no.

If you have a good dose of self-distance then making an arse out of yourself is just as fun!
Trust me, I don't need alcohol for that ;D

I'm fine with sobriety. I'm constantly having fun without extra chemicals in my system.

I think my distaste for alcohol makes me the worst Canadian ever.

Bah, anyone who thinks sobriety is overrated has obviously never had flat/house/room mates who are drunk far more frequently than they are.

EDIT: I just realised I should actually add more; yes, being drunk can be fun, but I've never seen the appeal in going clubbing or whatever else once drunk. I just prefer doing stuff that I'd enjoy anyway while drunk, like having rambling conversations or watching hilariously bad films with my friends. Not standing in a cramped, overheated, noisy, expensive nightclub with music that all sounds the same.

I will concede that going to ironic 80's clubs is weirdly fun when drunk... But that's a matter I'd rather not go into. XP

Ha ha, it's funny because you're an addict. But seriously that could lead to some unhealthy habits.
