I'm sick and tired of people saying they're softcore gamers when they're not. Softcore gamers have these qualifications:

1. You only play games that other softcore gamers recommend you.
2. You play for a few minutes, in between doing chores or homework.
3. When you buy your children games for their XBox 360, you wonder why they're upset when you buy them Cooking Mama for the Wii.
4. Sudoku online is what you consider a pretty hardcore game.

When I game, I go soft or go home. I'm always soft. Or limp. Either way, when it comes to gaming, the games are never satisfied with my performance. Half the time, they ask me to invert my controller but I tell them thats the only way it goes. Down is down baby, down is down.

I've never heard the term "softcore gamers" before. It seems like it would be a pretty obvious jump to make from hardcore gamers, but I never made the connection. How weird.

Yeah... softcore is a porn term, not a gaming term (hardcore being both)... casual is the word you're looking for.

...yeah, that's pretty much me. I was pretty hardcore up until about 2002. Now I guess post-hardcore would be the best way to describe me...

Tell me about it. Those games on the PC are real freaks. Such high maintenance too.

Seriously though I think that softcore gamers are more hardcore than what the OP describes. From the sound of things what you're talking about is someone who wouldn't even self-identify as a gamer. I.e. A middle aged, middle class parent who plays sudoku or the occasional Iphone app on the train.

Someone who would go to the trouble of calling themselves a softcore gamer probably means that while gaming is a part of their lives they don't put hours of their time into it or have a particularly large emotional investment in the pastime. They'd most likely not have any links to the community online and maybe play with friends.

I'm fluffy pillow softcore. When I play I take things slow, real slow. I start at the feet of the game and gently work my way up, teasing the good parts for just a moment, before moving tenderly up towards the face. After getting real close and friendly I begin to work my way back down to the good parts.....then I grab those parts and go insane on em.

On Topic: you could consider any gamer who plays for fun, lols, or to be social with friends to be softcore, because the definitions of hard core i've been exposed to are someone who plays for gamescore/trophies, or someone who would rather game than do anything else

I've read a lot of your posts, I don't always agree with you, but I've always respect your opinion. Though this post has me a bit puzzled.

Are you referring to the Farmville phenomenon or something else? My mom plays bejewelled and things of that nature and I would barely consider her a 'softcore' gamer by my standards.

In my experience I've always viewed softcore gaming as a means to game without caring. In other words, someone who can get onto CoD and not care about their K ratio or if they win or lose, just as long as they have fun.

The thing I see happening with gaming between people, like us, who game constantly, is that our industry has grown much more quickly than our definitions of what has been happening. In other words, your definition of "softcore" gaming fits your structure, but not necessarily mine.

I vote we petition Webster dictionary to get definitive definitions of just what we're talking about.

I'm such a softcore gamer. When I'm supposed to hit the buttons I just hit riiiight beside them and hope nobody noticed what I did because I make a lot of gaming noises when I do.
