Spoiler: The videogames aren't hurting the kids, the fast moving pieces of metal coming from the barrels of your guns are.

Oh they do a good job of banning a lot of people from that.
Methinks they did this not because they view videogames as bad, but they know with nothing else to do, there will be a lot of kids signing up to fight. It's just a sad place when people can make up things as they go along in the name of religion. Oh right, the Vatican does that, too.
Although it's worth pointing out that if you're seriously directly comparing fundamentalist Islam and the Vatican, then you've seriously lost all sense of perspective.

I wouldn't call it a comparison, each has their sinners and their saints. My point was more that muslim fundamentalists aren't the first to commit such hipocrisy. People are still too eager to single out muslims and act like they shouldn't even exist because of the actions of a minority faction.
Either case, the efforts of this one branch of the church to try to ban videogames is really futility, considering Somalia has about a thousand separate rulers and/or governments, as well as probably well over a hundred separate muslim and even other religious churches trying to play the big advisor. Frankly how this bit of news made it to the AFP is pure luck.

It's probably already been said.... but can't we like reach some kind of compromise with Mr. Atkinson.... we get our R18 and he gets to become 'El Presidente Supremo' of Somalia... by the sounds of things he'll fit right in....

Obvious attempt to get more recruits is obvious, the youth have only two options left to them now, crime or warfare.

Good ol' Islamic extremists, they always portray humanity in such a brilliant way.

On a side note, did Onmi's post really constitute a ban? It was a bit harsh, but it's like Asimov didn't even read the news article, let alone simply not fully comprehend it.
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. A warning was probably deserved though.

Still, Asimov's post was pretty stupid. He should've got a warning as well for being an ignorant tool.

I like the way that they are saying video games hurt the culture and youth...
Somehow I think making them become child soldiers hurts culture and youth a lot more.
Poor people, not they have even that banned...

Somebody may have already said it at this point, but...

Are these the same Islamist warlords who think child soldiers and maritime piracy are perfectly ethical means to impose their inconsistent, largely inexplicable religious views on everyone around them? I guess this is just another example of the inconsistency.

Honestly, this isn't that big of a deal. The children of Somalia are already growing up illiterate in a country where the average life expectancy is something like 45. With all that's a disaster over there, this is barely shrug-worthy.

Stories like this really make me wonder why on earth people on these forums even bother to complain about Christianity... Islam is so much worse...
Perhaps you have not heard about such wonderful people as Pat Robertson, the Spanish inquisition, the people who protest at soldiers funerals, the KKK, Jesus camp, Jerry Falwell and the Crusades.
Islam is not worse, just different. Any belief, any, can turn really nasty when taken to the extremes. Take communism, a system where people should love trust and look after each other, and then look at Stalin.
To say that one religion is worse than another, or better than another, is prejudiced and very ignorant. It all depends on how it is used and who uses it.

You're right. I guess my choice of words was poor.

It's just that I have not seen Christianity fall to a level of corruption akin to the crusades anytime recently, and there will always be idiots in any group that make the rest look bad. I've seen and heard much worse from Islam in recent years. More brutality, more control, etc.

But you're right: anything, when taken to its extreme, can turn very ugly.

Crap, people on my friends list keep getting permabanned over threads like this. Some posters shoulda left well enough alone when they saw that controversy steamroller heading towards them.

Anyway, it sucks that folks in the Middle East are getting the short end of the stick, AGAIN. I wonder what it would be like to be a decent, hard-working guy living in Iraq or Somalia. Bet it would suck hard. I mean, you've got a bunch of strangers running tanks all over your stuff on the one hand, and beardy dudes with rifles yelling about all the things you aren't allowed to do on the other. And there's sand everywhere, too.

"Sand! It's everywhere... Get used to it!"

This is a sad, sad excuse of a draft. oh sure, to the fifte- no, no, lets say there younger than that, after all, if these sick, militant groups can get their hands on them younger, then they will have just that much more of a tighter grip on them. To the 10 year olds, who are living in a wartorn, dirt poor, and now, thanks to these guys, who have managed to take away any rewarding form of entertainment in their already dangerous society, these ten year old kids are literally either too poor, or too scared to do anything. so now we have a large population of young people, who are literally bored too death. think about kids man, there nothing but balls of energy, juts waiting to do something! anything! and yet, thanks to these hateful, militant assholes, these kids are just gonna sit there, filled with energy. and you know what happens where your a kid when your bored? you get restless, you get angry, which is exactly what these extremists want. once the kids are drowned in debt, boredom, and depression, they see these religious, militant extremists as the only thing they can do. and then, there gone. the problem is, these people, these extremists, are old. and they need to infect their hate to a younger generation. but people, kids especially, aren't born violent. And so, due to Somalia's lack of any social structure, these kids are left with no options. no baseball, no books, no movies...just pick up that aka, and kill the guy who has a bigger nose than you, that HEATHEN!.

Somalia is another Tutsi-Hutuu massacre just waiting to happen.

You know what this means, according to Dick Cheney's Law of Association?:

A terrorist group banned video games (yeah, I know, armed Islamist, terrorist, six of one, half dozen of the other, it's semantics.) Therefore anyone who wants to ban video games has adopted the methods of the terrorists and must therefore be a terrorist himself.

Jack Thompson and Michael Atkinson want to ban video games. Therefore, they are terrorists. Well then. Off to Gitmo with 'em!

Not surprised. The point is to take away alternatives to join the militias. Now all the kids CAN do is fight and kill. It's wrong.
