The sad thing is is even the people in the ER here are touchy about that. For example, they won't do tests generally unless you have some kind of insurance and just going in and seeing a doctor is like $400 (that's ridiculous)
Agreed. However, if you are in the US, ERs are required by law to stabilize and treat. So if nothing else they will be able to establish that your ailment is not immediate or life threatening by ruling out things such as infarction, Stroke, ect. They may end up giving you a breathing treatment via nebulizer and if you show signs of improvement from that it would help to narrow down your issue, and make it easier to endure until you can see a gen practitioner who can do the more extensive testing.

Suggestion: If you cannot afford the visits, and have no insurance, Doctors, Urgent care, ERs all have sliding fee scales, and Charity cases that are evaluated by social workers. you simply need to ask for the paperwork to submit, which will generally make the cost infinitely more affordable.

And as for everyone talking about 15 days being unheard of? Seriously? have you been to a doctor in the US within the last decade? I cant speak for major metropolitan areas, but I know in smaller towns and cities this can easily be relatively normal. To see a dentist I had to wait 3 weeks, My last doctor appt I had to schedule a week and a half in advance because there were no open slots. It might not be the case everywhere, but it is far more common in the US than to liken it to a third world country.

Dentists waiting times are understandable. In my part of the UK 3 weeks to a month is the standard wait for a check up.

Doctor appointments however are next day (if you are fast enough, if not then within 2-3 days. They've learned here that if they try to make you wait longer they *WILL* get bitched out (politely) over the phone and if its a case of difficulty breathing/lots of pain, we WILL go to the papers and have nosey journalists crawling up their ass about it.

I had the samething you did and it turned out I had Acid Reflux Disease. Next time when it hurts try drinking some soda or taking antacids and see if you feel better.

I have similar, Hyperacidity, they called it. Lansoprazol is now my life partner. It is however a tempermental sob and sometimes doesn't work properly.

The answer is simple, increase the severity of your condition so that they see you immediately, I suggest cutting off a toe, not too major, but enough to get you in ASAP.

Thats a bit harsh. He could just stab himself in the foot with the same result and say he dropped a carving knife in it.

Yeah, but nothing says "front of the line" like an "accidental" amputation.

Go to the ER before you die. Waiting may save you money, but it could also do more damage to your body. And I am very sorry about your insurance situation.

man when did this forum turn into webmd?

Well it has signs and symptoms of CHF, stroke, Heart attack from the text description, However other things would need to be considered. Factors such as age, weight, habits like drinking and smoking.
Another factor to consider: have you recently fallen off a motorcycle and slid into the kerb at 60mph or been hit in the chest with a sledgehammer?

Also: we need a pain rating [http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/02/boyfriend-doesnt-have-ebola-probably.html], please.

Maybe some of you guys can help me out to figure out what's going on and if I should be really worried about what's going on with my body.

About 4 days ago I started having really bad chest pains on the right side of my body. It hurts from my neck to about 2/3s of my stomach.
Sounds like a collapsed lung, they can heal themselves, but i reccomend going to the ER

It could as well be emphysema or bronchitis if smokings involved.

Given that its been going on for 4 days and youve not turned blue or dropped dead yet, Im guessing its something a little less severe. So perhaps you should look at an inbetween route and locate a local urgent care office. Less expensive than an ER, has longer hours than a doctors office and usually able to handle walkins.

Im no doctor, but I do have a minor background in EMS, to which separating and prioritizing cases was a required skill. Get the best care, as soon as possible, but look at the facts and dont overreact.
Excuse me? Please explain how an ER is expensive.

I'd say get your ass over to the ER. Also, sorry about your insurance situation, sounds like a nightmare and makes me REALLY glad I don't live in the US.

Best not to take chances. Abdominal pains like that aren't good. I've occasionally gotten sharp pains in my abdomen myself, but they are very rare, and my doctor told me not to worry, but for you it seems to be a consistent thing, therefore a more serious issue.

I'd suggest going to the ER.

You pay.... to go to public hospital?

Didn't the US government recently try to reform the health system there?

Wow, Australia really rules.

If I'm sick I can go to a public hospital for free, I'm given money to help support me as I'm a full time student, I can get better health care for $2.00 a day, I don't have to pay up front to go to uni, I just payt more tax later in life and only if I'm earning a certain amount, it's really hard for people to get guns here.

I'm like a million times happy. I think I might sing.

I hope your not going to read this, because it means you still didn't go to the ER,if you do read it,GO TO THE ER!

As for the 15 day waiting period to see a doctor,I'm reall surprised.I mean,I know getting an appointement with a specialist doctor(for non-life threatening problems of course)can take months, and that's in pretty much every country, but 2 weeks for a doctor? That's insane.

I'm sorry USA,but your healthcare system is deplorable.Last time I checked,it took $100 just for a check up and little cleaning at the dentist.

I've already set up a doctor's appt but I have to wait for another 15 days before they can see me. Should I just wait till my scheduled appt or should I go see an ER Dr?
I'd go see ER, better safe than sorry right? Not being a pessimist but what if it's serious? 15 days might be 15 days too long.

Sounds like a chest infection, I had one a few weeks ago. Go to the ER if it will stop you worrying.
