Woo, my first unoriginal topic! And I apologize in advance as I've seen this topic before, and I'm sure some of you are already sick of it, or not as it'll give you another chance to lather me with your love of your favorite Survival Horror titles.

Anyway, a little bit of (rather embarrassing) backstory.

Other than Eternal Darkness, and Resident Evil 4, which I'm not even sure counts, as it wasn't that scary once you got out of the village square (or you got the shotgun in some cases), I have never played a survival horror game.

I have never played Silent Hill, I have never played Clocktower, I have never played System Shock, for fucks sake, other than 4, I have never even played Resident Evil. Well lately I've been aching for some horror, so I invite you all to recommend me some titles, but before you do here's a list of what I plan on getting. Is there something I should also get, is there something I shouldn't waste my time on, and do I have to play them in order? For example I only plan on getting System Shock 2, do I need 1 to understand it, and if I don't, is 1 still really good, and should I get it anyway?

Well, without further... ah fuck it, here's the revised list:

Silent Hill
Silent Hill 2
Resident Evil Remake
Resident Evil 2
Clocktower
Fatal Frame
Fatal Frame 2
Fatal Frame 3
Condemned
Dead Space
The Suffering
System Shock 2
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Penumbra
Alone in The Dark (The first one)

List of games to pick up only if found cheap:

Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
Resident Evil: Zero
Clocktower 2
Clocktower 3
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4
Clive Barker's Undying
Clive Barker's Jericho

Side Note: My biggest in-game fear is deep water. Some of the biggest, most "fuck you" monsters in gaming, have come out of the water. So if you guys know of any underwater Survival Horror titles, I'd be very appreciative.

Underwater survival horror: that level in Dino Crisis 2. It's pretty terrifying, but then you replay it and get the infinite ammo card. Also, whilst not survival horror per se, Half-Life: Opposing Force has an underwater-based segment.

EDIT for more relevance: System Shock 2 doesn't require knowledge of SS1 (which has dated so much that there's no point, really). Same with the Silent Hill games - jump in where you feel like it. Also, the Siren games on PS2/3 are pretty good.

I for one think that the Resident Evil games for gamecube (zero and the remake of the original) were pretty dark, gritty, and fun to play over and over again.

If you want really really old-school survival horror try either the Alone in the Dark series, or Alone in the Dark 4: The New Nightmare. I like both (although I'm probably the only one)

Heh, I would, but really not interested in buying games for single segments, and I played all the Half-Life's so far, and yes, the underwater parts are especially terrifying. In fact, I think it was that damn fish that started it.

Ah, ok, thanks for that, and yes, I have heard about the Siren series, they completely slipped my mind. However, I haven't heard much about what they're about, all I hear is that they're "not bad", or "pretty good". I'll have to look 'em up.

I keep hearing about that series, but I get mixed answers wherever I mention it. Some say it's awesome, some say it's horrendous. They also give different answers on where to start and which ones to play, so I've just been ignoring it. (<- Referring to Alone in the Dark)

Not the only one: I'm a big fan of Alone in the Dark 4.

It seems as though every other post of mine is about it but Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is awesome and scary.

I best tactic for Resident Evil is empty all your bullets at a zombie then run to the corner and spin round in circles on the spot until he eats you.

Penumbra!

Penumbra!

Penumbra!

Did I mention Penumbra?

It's the best horror this side of Eternal Darkness.

Bring multiple pairs of underwear perhaps?

Unfortuantly, The Suffering is no longer Freeware, so I suggest to try Fatal Frame first. Some of the games on your list can be hard to track down and are worth a decent some of money. I know the Fatal Frames are usually around $40 still, with the cheapest I've seen being $20.

Yeah, that's gonna be my biggest problem with this little binge. Hopefully I can get most of the big ones without too much trouble.

This is another that people kept giving me mixed answers about, but the majority informed me that System Shock was better so I put that down. If I find Bioshock cheap though, I'll pick it up aswell.

I only planned on playing 1 and 2, but if I find 3 cheap, I'll get that too.

Don't ignore it. The first game (the one from 1992 or 93, i forget) is brilliant and more than a little scary. The second and third ones are OK, if not that scary. And New Nightmare is good too, although by that point all scariness went down the drain. The reason you get mixed answers is probably because the latest game is also called simply Alone in the Dark, just like the very first one, and most people say it's shit (haven't played much of it myself).

From your list, I would start with Silent Hill 1 (The best horror game of all time, I even like it better than the second game, especially because of the puzzling story), System Shock 2, Clock Tower, Penumbra and Dark Corners of the Earth.

Hmmm, okay then. I guess I will give AitD a look. *Added*
