How about, as individuals, regardless of our gender, we are free to do or not do any of the OP's suggestions?

Although I dislike the concept that you're somehow less of a man if you don't know certain arbitrary skills, I'll make a checklist. The only one on the list I really agree with is CPR.

-Fire a gun (check)
-Fish (check)
-Hunt (Haven't actually tried it, but I know how to use a shotgun, and can hit 9 out of 10 clay pigeons)
-Gut a fish/skin an animal (can gut fish, never tried to skin an animal)
-Cook a few easy recipes (check)
-Throw a punch (check)
-Take a punch (never tried. Assume I can)
-Read (Check)
-Read a manual (check)
-Build something (There is no guarantee it'll be very nice, but check)
-Drink (check)
-Sing or play some kind of instrument (check)
-Use basic tools (Check)
-Talk to others (Check)
-Talk to someone you're attracted to (Check)
-Play Chess (Check)
-Play poker (Don't know if I still remember the rules, but I remember having to wear only a sock around the place we stayed at football camp after a round of strip-poker)
-Dance (I know the basics of swing and salsa, if I can remember it, that is)
-Know how to grow a decent garden (Nope. I know the names of a few flowers though)
-Ride a horse (check)
-Build a fire (Check)
-Repair your possessions (check. At least for some possesions.)
-Pitch a tent (Check)
-Tie a tie (I forget how between every time I tie one. Prefer bow-ties either way)
-Drive a car (working on it. I'm not old enough to get a license yet)
-Ride a motorcycle (nope)
-Jump start a car (nope)
-Change a tire (check)
-Change the oil (Never tried. Can't be too hard though)
-Perform first aid, including CPR (It's been a long time since I had a course, but I hope I remember it)
-Clean yourself (I prefer to wallow in my own filth, thank you. Just kidding, check)
-Clean your possessions (I give my laptop baths regularly)
-Shave (I can shave what little down I have)
-Know what they're talking about (In certain fields at least)
-Open a can/bottle (How I open bottle, durr?)
-Twist off a lid (Check)
-Sharpen a knife (Only ever sharpened scythes)
-Swim (Check)
-Operate a boat (Basic outboard motor, check)
-Pack a suitcase (Check)
-Pack a car (I do not own a car yet.)

In my opinion humans period require Integrity.
Males especially, Integrity is important. You should know how to keep your word, and you should value your word.

My da always said, "People can take almost anything from you, but they cannot take your integrity"
/request to be added to the list. "Integrity"

I'm totally a fan of conforming to gender stereotypes...

Oh wait, silly me, I actually enjoy being myself. And I much prefer to not pressure other people to conform to gender stereotypes.

As someone earlier mentioned, if this was about women people would be freaking out. But this is exactly the same, gender is a non-issue, forcing/pressuring people to conform to stupid gender stereotypes is stupid.

Grrr this thread makes me angry.

Edit: And split firewood. Every man should split firewood at least once in his life. It's kind of fun, once you learn the trick.
I split like three whole trees worth of firewood this week.

It was super easy. All you need to do is put a piece of wood in front of the splitter and push both the levers forward. :p
Ah, but could you construct that splitter yourself? :p
Oh sure. I just need a garden hose and a tractor engine. I'll make the hydraulic piston out of duct tape and buckets, and use spit instead of hydraulic oil in the hose.

OT: At least one method of killing someone with your bare hands. (Or feet or whatever)
Easy enough. You know that twisting technique they use to break necks in the movies? Incomplete. What you have to keep in mind when doing that is this: lift to separate vertebrae and stretch cartilage... then twist and jerk backwards to sever the spinal cord with the vertebrae.
I'll keep that in mind, though I'm more a fan of choking, seeing how it takes so little practice and there's practically no chance of accidentally paralyzing the victim.
There's the promblem that it exposes you for so long though.

No, it's worth mentioning, but not really something you can "do"

If I include a list of this a man should have/be I'll add it, I probably won't though, I'm already getting enough assholes telling me I'm enforcing unfair gender stereotypes because they can't tell the difference between "should" and "must"

I seriously think you're misunderstanding peoples gripes with this list. Your telling people that men should do something to be proper men and people are taking offence to this, because they feel that the only qualifier to be a man is... feeling that you are a man.

Should know at leasg basic hunting (where to shoot and how to skin and gut) and know how to make at least one rodent or fish trap. Or at least know how seeds dirt and water work. All this is because if you and your family get lost (which happens to thousands of people.) You shouldnt be useless

I know how seeds, dirt and water work! You just get a hoe and scrape at grass until you get seeds. Then scrape at some dirt until its tilled and make sure there is water within four blocks. Then just shove the seeds in the ground, but make sure to only crouch walk over the plants or they die.

Let me just say this first, I love fight club. I have seen that film three times as many times as my next seen movie (I usually watch films once or twice before being bored of them, I have seen fight club 9 times).

With that said something on that list are less "mans role" and more "your not cool unless ...".

Fire a gun? How does that define my role as a man? Nah.

Being Bear grylls, I can understand that a little. Being the provider and all but who enjoys skinning an animal or killing one? Do it if you have to not as a passage to man hood.

If you can't cook chicken curry rice you need serious help! Also kind of the opposite of defining a mans role.

Again throwing and taking a punch aren't defining a role, there just "i'm cool 'cos I can do 'em" things.

Everybody should be able to read! Again, not defining a role.

The one that made me write this. I am not a man or defined as a man 'cos I refuse to drink alcohol? I am not bear swilling teen or sophisticated wine sipper I'm less of a man? If I'm less of a man your more of a sheep.

Again, playing an instrument or singing not defining a role 'cos that was a womans job aswell. It's also a "I'm cool 'cos I can ...." thing.

If you can't smack a nail into a piece of wood you're not human! Babies can do that. Hell, chimps can do that.

I am not social so I am not as much of a man? How the fuck does that work? It makes no sense at all. What about people who lock themselves away to do research or invent, I think the people who invented antibiotics and the hello-phone kept themselves to themselves and there manly to me.

Play chess and poker? 'cos they used to in old films and/or it's a thinking mans game? Geez, this list in crazy. Again, not defining a role just cool 'cos you can do it.

Dance!?! I am not a man 'cos I have no rhythm? It's a long standing joke men can't dance or have no rhythm. Again, not defining a role just cool 'cos you can do it.

Your not a man unless you can garden! WHY!?! Good lord.

It just gets worse the more it goes on, "operate a boat"!? whats next "your not a man unless you can bench 150KG"? What about "unless you have a deep booming voice"? "your IRL peen is 6 inch"?

This is like some people have gone "I can do that and that makes me a man!", how about "have a full sleeve tattoo" 'cos I have one, what about "solve a megaminx" 'cos Ican do that in 10 minutes.

I am all for gaining back some of our identity, but some thing on this list aren't even close to that.

You sir deserve all the cookies in the jar!

Non of this "operate a boat" crap, integrity should be on that list! Along with things like honesty 'cos it what makes you a better person, how does driving a boat prove anything?

Others I think should be on there; respect, humility, manners etc.

To be honest unless your saying what by sterotyping what a man should know our if your trying to be humourous and write a list of manly man things the real mans man should know I fail to see the need of making a list of things a man, or anyone should need to know.

In reference to the list:

Fire a gun - I cannot fathom why every man or person should need to know how to use a gun
Fish - Again unnecessary as most people buy food nowadays and most people who fish use it as a past-time.
Hunt - same as above
Gut a fish/skin an animal - again pretty much the same as above
Cook a few easy recipes - okay I do think it's a good thing that everyone should be able to know how to cook a few basic recipes
Throw a punch - As unnecessary as the gun, people should talk through there problems and never fight them
Take a punch - not really something anyone can even learn as it depends entirely on who's throwing the punch
Read - Okay yea I think it'd be better if everyone could read in this sense.
Read a manual - I'm pretty sure everyone can read a manual, well every literate person, they just often choose not to
Build something - I suppose it would be a handy skill to have, though not necessary
Drink - No, people don't need to be able to drink and shouldn't feel obliged to
Sing or play some kind of instrument - I dont see the need for everyone to be musical on some level, we each have our own hobbies and for many people music isn't one of them
Use basic tools - kinda the same as the build catagory
Talk to others - Yea people should definatly be able to be sociable
Talk to someone you're attracted to - Again I would say this is true
Play Chess - Only people who are interested in playing/watching chess need to know anything anything about it
Play poker - same as above
Dance - considering there is no right way to dance everyone really know's how to dance
Know how to grow a decent garden - kinda pointless if you live in an apartment no?
Ride a horse - buh..why??
Build a fire - kinda falls into the hunting/fishing category again
Repair your possessions - well depends on the variation of your possessions and the extent of their damage?
Pitch a tent - again only if you intend on hiking/camping.
Tie a tie - Yea pretty necessary, almost as much as being able to dress/feed yourself.
Drive a car - not really, plenty of people can live fine without a car.
Ride a motorcycle - same as above
Jump start a car - if you have a car you should know how to do this
Change a tire - same as above
Change the oil - same as above
Perform first aid, including CPR - okay it would be great for everyone to know these, though sometimes they're used improperly and cause more damage than they fix.
Clean yourself - yea everyone should know how to do this
Clean your possessions - same as above
Shave - kinda the same as above i guess
Know what they're talking about - i'd assume everyone already knows this
Open a can/bottle - well it's something that you generally pick up with ease
Twist off a lid - again same as above
Sharpen a knife - okay no i dont see the need to know this
Swim - while i often think it's a good thing for everyone to know how to swim it's not really necessary
Operate a boat - why?
Pack a suitcase - im pretty sure anyone can pack a suitcase.
Pack a car - im pretty sure everyone knows this

Not sure if this fits on the list, but I think the most important skill/trait/ability for any man to have is Resourcefulness. Being able to make use of whatever means are available to accomplish whatever task. But its also the ability to learn and teach yourself new things, the ability to find answers and solutions to problems...

For example... Lets say you need to do some renovations around your house, or your car starts acting up... You don't have to know how to fix it right then and there. You don't need to be an expert - nobody knows everything. But as a man, you should know where to find the answers. You should know where to find the information you need, to help diagnose a problem and where to find the right tools for the job.

Being Resourceful is the most important thing, I'd say. As long as a man can use his head, he'll never be helpless.
