For using the Terms Casual and Hardcore games. Am I unaware of the fact that these distinctions do not exist? Are Peggle Deluxe and Gears of war going to appeal to the same people? Actually, they do, now that I think about it.

Am I the only person that would call Bioshock more casual than Operation Flashpoint?

Is the Wii not selling high for making casual games?

What I really want to know is what brought this on. It seems to me that games that target hardcore or casual gamers, might fall into these categories themselves.

It also seems to me that an entire industry built on gaming might know what they are talking about.

So we are back to generalizing games now, after they sought to distinguish them from one another? Is Wii bowling the same as Gears of War?

The words 'casual' and 'hardcore' have no set meaning. People change it all the time. In reality, there is no such distinction. Games are games are games. Play what you enjoy.

I wouldn't say you are a douche for using those terms unless you were insulting a game for being 'casual'.

he's saying the title that someone called him a douche then in the first line of the subject he is saying why "for using the terms casual and hardcore gamer."

OT: games are games, like megatron said, but its even worse when people youre talking to lose sight of that fact. i say fuck the whole classification and let everyone play any type of game

Peggle would probably not fall in the same category as Resident Evil 5, but I guess he might have called you a douche because... he has typing Tourettes?

Using casual and hardcore to compare people makes you a douche. I don't know if you did, and truthfully, I don't care. Get over it.
And yes, I know tons of people that play Peggle and Gears of War. And like both of them.

Wait, Wait. It seems the dictionary places fairly set meanings for these words.
Hardcore
1. unswervingly committed; uncompromising; dedicated: a hard-core segregationist.
2. pruriently explicit; graphically depicted: hard-core pornography.
3. being so without apparent change or remedy; chronic: hard-core inflation; hard-core unemployment.

Casual
1. happening by chance; fortuitous: a casual meeting.
2. without definite or serious intention; careless or offhand; passing: a casual remark.
3. seeming or tending to be indifferent to what is happening; apathetic; unconcerned: a casual, nonchalant air.
4. appropriate for wear or use on informal occasions; not dressy: casual clothes; casual wear.
5. irregular; occasional: a casual visitor.
6. accidental: a casual mishap.

As for games, it is up to the person to distinguish them. A hardcore game for one may be a casual game for another.

The reason I dislike the terms is because it mean that I'm this designated pigeon hole depending on whether I like 'serious' and 'hardcore' games. Am I a hardcore gamer if I like to play half an hour of Super Metroid between classes because I have some time to kill? Am I still 'casual' if I compete in tournaments of Peggle for money? I'd say that's pretty 'hardcore'. I just think the terms are generic, ambiguous and ludicrously over-used. I also just hate the term 'hardcore gamer' it makes me think of angry, elitist, Mountain Dew saturated guys who call me a 'fag' over mic chat.

Well i cant refute whether or not you are a douche...but games are games. They might not involve the same amount of dedication but its still a program played via a computer/console and therefore a video game.
True but the programs themselves aren't the same. There are distinctions on a gamer level, video game level, and coding level

While I agree with making the distinction between casual and hardcore, you've got the wrong idea.

1) Casual and hardcore don't mean Peggle and Gears. It means "Persons who just games for fun" and "Person who games for fun, gets into it, reads reviews, is up to date on the news, is interested in game design, producing, developing, etc"

2) By your definition, Flashpoint is more "casual" than Bioshock. Look past the gameplay and delve into the philosophy and story of the game. That would fly right over a casual (by your definition) gamer's head.

You got compared to a women's hygiene product? You struck someone as being a item used to clean out a womans vagina with a squirt of water?

How did you get called that?

I guess I should have specified 'in gaming'. Although since we're in the Gaming forum, I thought that was understood.

And if we are trying to accept 'casual' and 'hardcore' games as genres, as many are trying to do, then there must be a set definition. Since there isn't one and, as you said, it varies from gamer to gamer, then the words are moot.

There is and has always been a distinction between casual and hardcore games. Hardcore games are generally online multiplayer games that are played at a competitive level and require dedication to do well in. Casual games are games that do not require a large amount of skill or dedication to enjoy and provide an immediate source of entertainment.

I'm not quite sure how any of this has anything to do with you being a douche though.

Meet the man who was raised on PC games, and considers himself a hardcore gamer. In the sense that I love playing games, and speaks full sentences when talking into a mike. Please note that there are several types of us, and most are pleasent, well groomed, and will help newbies.

It seems the hatred for these terms does not come from the games themselves, but the industry surrounding them. In this case, I do agree that they can be obscured and overused.
