So I was playing fallout for the first time I noticed a little something. Something odd. After choosing your race your father becomes that race, this is reasonable. The members of the vault are of many different racial backgrounds and have been around for a few centuries. At this point they should all be a mix of all races or horribly inbred.
So gimme your two cents on this subject.

You don't see everyone in Vault 101. The people who show up at your birthday party etc. are recurring characters, but there's definitely more people than that.

Why do they change the father ? Why not just do the smart thing and if for example you choose asian features then have your father stay white instead of magically changing and just let you think that your mother must have been asian.
Because it's cooler that way. I can't tell for sure, but I'm pretty sure that his features change a bit (skin tone, face shape, etc.) depending on what you pick.

Being of Caucasian(ness) I always make the typical white american character. But now that you have me thinking.

It's only 200 years...which at most is 4-5 generations...::Spoiler(ish):: unless one of the vaults was specifically made to have that done...

A grand change of something like that. Would take several hundred years...

Well like searanox said there's more people in the vault that we're not seeing. Though I think it's also because
the fact that the vault never opens is a lie and they let out and bring in new people every now and again.

They had been there for 200 years supposedly so inbreeding would have been rampant no matter how many people you squeeze in. I wont spoil anything but it does give you a half assed explanation for foreign genetic material in the vault after you leave but still. Im just hoping they keep this shit up and take fallout as far from oblivion as possible.

they don't. his only change is his ethnicity.

From the previous games. Most vaults held 200-300 people and few held 100-
Apparently they were designed to hold 1000, and according to the Fallout bible, there were plenty of Vaults that housed 1000.. in fact, I think there was even a vault that was overcrowded on purpose and housed 2000?

Later Quest Spoiler:

If you come back to the vault after you leave, you will have a quest where Amata and the rest of the kids want to open the vault. You can convince the Overseer that there is not enough genetic material in the vault to survive another 2-3 generations, and that they're basically doomed if they don't open the vault..

Or you can kill him with a railway spike and stick him to the wall.

Was mad disappointed with the results of not murdering the Overseer. He stands down and makes Amata the new Overseer, but then she's all like "You can't stay here anymore, we're kicking you out." And she says she feels bad about it, but I think she was just scared I'd be too fucking awesome in bed and in the Vault for her to contain.

Also, how the hell do they recognise me when I'm head to toe in top of the line Tesla Armour? :S

You're wrong for the reasons Yassen and Rinrick put forward. But on an kinda related note. why can you open vaults from the outside? all the ones i've been to open up easy as. Does seem to secure to me.

They're password protected, and the ones which you can open all the time I guess have the passwords disabled.

They don't bring in new people (except that one case), but they have lost lots of people on exploration and trading expeditions. I think at the beginning of the game, you can find records in one computer terminal of them inventing causes of death for certain individuals after they didn't come back.

Just as to what I have read so far ((YAY!))

The vaults held to what the exxperiment required...if that was 2000 to 50...
