The half-life of an atom is where...

Oh, you were talking about something else.

Well, your "half-life effect" is basically where you realise you are just about to die, and thus do everything in your power to ensure you don't. That would include focus.

This isn't a new discovery, but I like the name "Half-Life" Effect better then any of the others that have been coined for it.

A self-aware organism, recognizing the nearness of his own mortality, will enivitably fight hardest to save his life.

The Vikings had a saying: "The Hanged Man kicks hardest when the floor drops out."

Yeah Iv'e noticed this in FPS's especially in Half-Life to be honest but then that might be because if i'm playing half life 2 and i have like full health and suit charge etc I tend to put barely any effort into any kind of strategy so yeah basicly what everyone else said, now RTS games are a completly different matter , If the orcs overrun your fort, wipe out almost everything you have including your actual main base but you manage to sneak a builder to the other side of the fort and set up a second camp and then go on to win the game. That. Is. Skill. [Or luck or stupid A.I.]

The Half-Life Effect eh? Is that what kids are calling it nowadays?

I'll have to agree with geldonyetich on this one. Its more about you just got your ass whooped, and if you fuck up now, its game over, so get your head in the game.
Lol. The Sonic Effect is what it would be for me i guess lol.
You mean you constantly need to collect rings for some purpose that was never really explained?

well you find it in real life too. it's called adrenaline. it allows the bodies' senses to be hightened. it is caused by fear, exitement or enviromental factors such as noice or smell.

this is a bit exagarated in games but then again who of us can actually take 15 bullets to the chest and still be able to snipe somebody 1500 metres away

In other news, I agree. The original Call of Duty was notorious for this.
I can attenst to this. I remember at one point in CoD 2 surviving like 5 minutes of fighting bad guys on a scrap of health. That was quite awesome.

Edit: I mean CoD 2 Big Red One

Something like this happened to me while playing uncharted, ( I have no recollection of why I was playing this game) I was behind cover and about five guys were shooting at me, my pistol had 5 bullets left. Somehow one of the guys shot me and I got super pissed and felt the adrenaline rise in me, 3 seconds later they were all dead and my adrenaline level was so high I took their weapons and started shooting walls.

In ArmA 2.
me and my buddies were on a 4 hour long missions, all shot to shit by the end of it.

A T-90 had us pinned down in a backyard, all we had was one satchel charge, three grenades and our nearly out of ammo rifles.

needless to say after 4 hours, we didn't want to fail.

we blew the t-90 up.

I know what your talking about, but it seems like some games even make this a feature. In [Prototype], there is a skill that makes you invulnerable for a moment and gives you a free devastator attack (basically a "kill all enemies in the vicinity" card) when you are about to die. Funny thing is, I ended up using that skill to beat the final boss about five seconds before the time limit on the fight was up.
