I've noticed a lot of threads that point out the bad in anime lately. Lets point out an anime that shows character and meaning.

Gundam wing is a good example of what happens in war.

Edit: lets have videos that give examples please in nice "spoiler/""/spoiler" only with " replaced with []

I like that if you are willing to look for it, there is something for everyone's taste out there somewhere.

Clannad, the first season (I haven't watched the second yet). Oreimo is great if you have siblings. Welcome to the NHK was heartwarming. GinTama is a damn masterpiece, it's hilarious, has great characters, and I love it. It has some of the best comedy I have ever seen. None of that chibi transformation stuff, only pure comedy gold. Here, enjoy

A higher production value than Western cartoons, which is a massive generalisation, I'll admit.

A view into a culture alien to most of us in the West, sometimes.

Any benefit is conditional, unfortunately. I prefer to evaluate series by series.

The Wolf Brigade.
Grave of the Fire Flies.

Yeah, wonderful movies, I loved them. Though I hate most anime.

Spice & Wolf, a better character dynamic I've yet to see. In any medium.

Gankutsuou for putting a fresh spin on an old literary classic, while remaining surprisingly faithful to it.

And as mentioned indeed Grave of Fireflies for being what Schindler's List would have been if it had focused solely on that little girl in red, been even more emotional, and remained just as excellent.

I didnt say there weren't any faults. I said lets say something good about anime.
That is something good about it. It has the capacity to be taken seriously that way.

Thanks, one can never get enough cake! Of all I've seen it's my second favourite animé series so far, 26 episodes (so far) of pure brilliance, so it's an easy recommendation.

Honestly, and someone was going to say it so I'll just announce the elephant in the room here (don't hate me), Light Yagami and L from Death Note. They are both extremely complex and interesting characters (albeit not always likable) with change and evolve well within the series.

So far I have only watched 3 series.

Gundam 00 (apparently its like an updated wing, which I started but lost track off)
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion

But I found something enjoyable in all of them. I guess the hard bit is getting over the "entry hill" The way I see it its hard to know where to start because an entire style is handled like a genre. Its tough to pick out something you might like amid the myriad of over the top stereotypes and (sometimes) elitist fans.

I think the Kira/L relationship in Death Note is pretty damn well characterized.
I'd like to throw Lucky Star out there. The plot is probably the most simple anime plot I've ever seen, and everything that ever happens in that show has everything to do with fleshing out the characters more. I mean they don't have dark interesting complex pasts that you see with most round characters, but you don't really need that, it's just the easy way to do it. I think the characterization in Lucky Star is pretty well done.

Welcome To The NHK is one of the most introspective, character-driven and well thought out series I've ever seen.

And as for action series, It doesn't get much better then Ruroni Kenshin.

Really, that's the thing about anime: No matter what you like, there are at least 2 or 3 series that'll please you.

Cowboy Bebop. I'm getting tired of explaining this. It doesn't just drag on for hundreds of episodes to make more money. There are hidden meanings behind a lot of the episodes, or some of them are just for fun. It's unique. The characters are wonderfully well-made, and the way the story progresses, you find out more and more up until the amazing climax. The music gives it such an interesting and unique feel. It doesn't fall into the rest of the cheesier aspects of popular anime.

I think 9/10 what defines bad anime is marketing and the george lucasing of storylines. Where the whole series is nerfed by the company trying to stretch out episodes and content to sell more stuff to people. If the writing is bad the story is bad, But for right now I can't stop watching soul eater, have to pace my self ran out of gigs on my cable using netflix to watch as much darker than black, and gah the one with the guy who kills things with his camera.
