Tekkaman Blade is a series that was YEARS ahead of its time.

An older Anime from the Anime Giant Tatsunoko Productions, it actually started and solidified MANY of the tropes you see in Mecha Anime now.

With a cast of good characters that develop well over the course of the series, some stunning animation for its age, a great plot with a good mix of Humor, Action, and some serious Drama, and some really great fights made it an excellent series.

Aoi Hana: a low-key romance drama with complex and realistic characters. Who are also lesbians. You'll never see a show like this made in the US. Fumi is one of the most believable, relatable characters I've seen in any medium. There's also Sasameki Koto, which has a slightly less mature story but has a similarly likeable protagonist (also the only anime to make me tear up on the first episode).

Dennou Coil: deviously well-written sci-fi. It's like Ghost in the Shell crossed with a Ghibli movie (in a good way). A rare example of everything making perfect sense despite having a very complex story. It's original, has round characters and some really fantastic scenes.

K-On!: the newest of the (good) slice-of-life comedy animes. It contains a lot of moemoe and has no plot, but does it so well that it becomes more entertaining because of it. And some really, really catchy songs.

Ichigo Mashimaro: very clever comedy disguised as an ultra-cute slice-of-life show. Full of deadpan, non-sequiturs and excellent comedic timing. Unusual for anime in that it's actually pretty dry humor, similar to British comedy.

Aria: slow, almost meditative sci-fi anime about gondoliers on Mars. It makes sense in context. The characters all develop over the course of the series, showing more and more of the utopian philosophy of the show. Very much a feel-good anime.

Serial Experiments Lain: surreal, disturbing horror/sci-fi. One of very few horror animes that actually has some creepiness (off the top of my head, I can only remember Boogiepop Phantom and the first arc of Higurashi coming close).

I could go on, but I think I'll cut it short here.
