SON!! I broke the computer!!

My father is pretty retarded with computers, but he's too proud to admit that I'm better. When something is wrong with his comp he will never ever get anyone for help and destroy it even more, and start blaming me for it. However I got my own gaming comp so I don't see how I could do it for I never use his comp. Only thing he's good at is establashing entworks through the house, but for the rest, never ask him for help.

My mom's even worse, she doesn't even know how to copy paste a link.

My brother is very savvy himself, prob more than I am, my sis is pretty good 2, however she doesn't give it much attention for that won't be 'cool'

Second I saw this topic I knew the feeling instantly. This first one was three days ago:

"Error must confirm your password"
Dad: "I FUCKING HATE COMPUTERS!! I DID TYPE MY PASSWORD!! SCOTT WHAT'S WRONG"
Me: "Did you type your password in again to confirm it?"
Dad: "What where do you do that?!"
Me: "...right underneath where you typed the password first time, where it says confirm password. "
Dad: "I've never had to do that before is it new??"

I reformated my sister's laptop because she managed to mess it up and first thing I said to her was to install anti-virus software and don't use the internet till she had. Two days later "It's filled with viruses already!!" "...Did you install anti virus like I said or did you just look up episodes of Hollyoaks?" "...Was I meant to?"

Better was when I said to my parents "don't do anything with the virus filled computer I will deal with it when I get back in a few hours". My mum bought an unknown anti-virus software because "the screen told her to". It was fake, cost her £45 and brought even more viruses which they refused to let me reformat to remove them all (there was close to 100 different trojans and viruses on that thing) because they didn't want to trust a backup, they'd rather just deal with the computer which had >80% of it's memory used up at all times (it wasn't a great computer)

It gets to the stage now where if a problem doesn't interest me or is caused by their stupidity I just refuse to do anything about it.

i have the same by most my family,me and my uncle *who teached me evrything i know about computers when i was 5* are pretty much the once to call if the internet doesent work or you cant do shit

OP: Thankfully, my parents are just as tech savvy as I am. My dad started working with computers back in the late 70's, so he's a long termer.

ah i love me some IT crowwd. luckily my entire family are computer whizz'z (my dads and engeineer, my borther a programmer and my other brother is an erm, architect.)

i often need to help my mom, my dad, my brother, my sister, my mother friends, my fathers friends....... still there was one who was working at ISP support and couldent find out how to get wireless internet... she screamed for me to help and a i took a look and switched on a laptob the small wireless lever... else its a true nightmare what happens,with my family being facebook wiitards unable to do the simplest computer tasks im instantly called for help.
and evry time someoene in my family has a proplem, like slow internet, computer a bit slow, they instantly scream to me ''VIRUS GET IT OUT PLEASE'' since i now have vowen only to use computers i buy myself i will not be blaimed no more

My grandfather used computers a hell of a lot in his work before he retired and still uses his computer quite a lot for ancestry websites. My mum, while she has some kind of computer qualification, tends to stay away from computers as much as she can (as do my Grandmother and my Nana), my brother also uses computers quite a lot at school and uses it for Photoshop and for walking routes (he's part of some kind of rambling society thing.) So by and large my family usually don't have too many problems with computers. As far as I know, no-one in my family that uses a computer double clicks on anything.

Completely unimportant, but in my mind, grandmother and nana are the same thing, what does it mean to you?

I used to have that kind of problem. I'd be working on something for a site I worked for.

"I'm doing something for work. It'll have to wait."
"I just need to check my emails real quick."
"Okay, but just don't close anything. I've been working for a few hours on all this and haven't had a chance to set it yet."
Cut to 3 fucking hours later.
"Your labtop (yes, she says labtop) just shut off an hour ago. What did you do to it?"
"I didn't do anything. You know when it says that the battery is dying and has all that stuff come up on the screen to tell you? It's trying to tell you the battery is dying."

And, of course, I had to redo all the stuff I was working on.

Years ago, there was this problem where my dad wasn't getting E-Mail from family members. He was also complaining quite regularly of, "Stupid porno E-Mails". After a while, I started piecing it together, and watched him as he logged on to his E-Mail account. He went to delete a fresh E-Mail from my uncle. Finally, I figured out what was going on. "Dad, why are you deleting that?" "Its more of those porn E-Mails Ive been getting" "And why do you think that?" "I delete all of those porn E-Mails, stuff from such-and-such at Hotmail." "I think I see the problem".

On the upside, my family generally puts their trust in me, and though they make every stupid mistake imaginable, they usually only do it once, and don't assume they know better then me. On the downside, I presently only have enough computer knowledge to generally BS my way through most problems, and when I was a younger go to IT guy, I had next to no knowledge, just the capacity to not be intimidated by a computer, think logically, be patient, and not break it even more.

When my step-dad is around everyone always goes to him for there computer problems. But what happens when he's not around? They come crying to me.

And like their ***** I do it. One day I will say no! One day!

This thread is great. Both may parents work on computers all day and my dad used to be a programer (about 25 or so years ago) so i don't get too much if this. Because my parents own their own business i get payed t write all their websites and applications though.

I was once talking to a guy in my old physics class who used to work in a computer repair shop. He was telling me some guy brought in his PC saying that it had suddenly stopped working, he asked the man where he had bought it from and he proudly said that he had built it himself. Anyway the guy opened it up to have a look inside and found that he had attached the motherboard to the case by screwing a wood screw right through the middle.

I never mess up. I always watch over people who use this PC to make sure they don't mess up.

But one time, I took a screenshot of my desktop to post somewhere. I wasn't thinking, so I set the picture of my desktop (not the actual wallpaper) as my wallpaper. I was using it, and I tried clicking one of my icons.

Oh god where to begin. I have probably forgotten more stupid remarks/assumptions my family's made about the computer than I can remember.

Still, for the fun of it, I'll try to list a few, though most variations are already represented:

"The computer has a virus because it takes forever to boot up/perform a task!" - Yeah, or it might be because everyone just installs crap onto it without using any form of de-fragmentation once in a while, or puts all their programs on auto-boot up.

"Here's the computer back. Don't know where your stuff went though, I just closed the pages I was working on." - Along with all my goddamn tabs, MOTHER!

And then there's the standard situations of:

-Parents assuming the internet has memory
-Parents deleting Firefox because it's new and strange and probably a virus.
-Sister downloading all sorts of free to play crap and whatever which always comes with some kind of retarded toolbar and a few Trojans.
-Me consequently getting blamed for all the junk that's on there, which most likely is causing the computer's receding performance, because I clearly use the thing the most (I should slap my parents around the head with my psychology text book covering false causality)

We had a family computer as fast as the damn wind itself when we first got it, and although I know it's impossible to prevent it from slowing down eventually, I'm more than certain it didn't have to be this slow already. Sisters are the curse of computers.

Oh, and my mom doesn't know where the Escape key is located. Even when I say top left -which I have done now on numerous occasions- she still takes about 5 seconds to find it.

Inspired by many things, among my parents as one of them, I decided to make this thread. Being the "expert" on computers in the family, pretty much anything that happens I get barked at for help. So I thought it would make a great thread to say some "annoying/dumb" things your parents or whomever, do with computers.

"Hey can I borrow your computer for a second?"

Also claiming firefox was too hard to use and IE was faster and easier.

in fact Wireless can be used everywhere if you construct your own high-distance antenna, but that's not easy...although the result can allow you to get wireless even on the other side of the country !
