I could recount hundreds of different stories, but there are now too many that I can't remember any single one. Rest assured I now actively avoid providing parental tech support.
It's mainly because my parents used to be in the industry and so magically assume they know anything about modern computers. They don't. They just think they do, and it's really annoying. My dad is especially bad, because he tries to 'help'. His method is radically different to mine, and takes a lot, lot longer. I can quickly identify a problem as impossible to fix within a reasonable timespan, but he'll persevere... God, he'll persevere.
Normally he'll call me down to help 'for a few minutes', which turns into hours, and hours, and hours of me sitting there while he tries the same thing over and over again while I tell him the correct thing to do. He just ignores it, telling me to slow down and be patient. Really, I think it's a power game.
But fuck them. This is genuinely too much to bear doing any more. I'll be leaving home for good in just over a year, so they need to learn now or never. No more help for them unless it's really bad.
