Wow, song overload. I'll make sure to look at every one of these tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for the contributions.

In my English class, students are allowed to bring in songs for everyone to listen to every Tuesday. We recently received a Smartboard, so people have been bringing in videos as well.
Well that seems like a waste of class time. Our class wrote a paper on our own "theme song" earlier this year, and we had to present it and play the song, but every Tuesday sounds dumb.

Oh, and I've always found Smartboards to be pretty useless. For what they cost I'd rather see the money go to something that's of more use. They were neat at first, but there's nothing that teachers use them for that can't be done in a much easier and better fashion. I mean, just look at what you're doing with your's, watching music videos once a week. Fuckle-doodle-doo.

For meaningful lyrics that you can actually do some fucking analysis on (I'm with Shivari on 'waste of class time'), try the Weakerthans. Don't know what songs of theirs have music videos. Pretty sure Aside does, but really you want something from Reconstruction Site, my personal favourite album EVER. Literally ever. I'm listening to it right now and I didn't even see this, think of it, and put it on.

OK, The Reasons has a video. Not the most meaningful song. How old are you, out of interest? If you've done Foucault they've got a song about him, with a video, Our Retired Explorer. Civil Twilight's good. So's Tournament of Hearts. Aside is a great song. Ah, hell, pick what ya like from here http://www.theweakerthans.org/audiovisual. Unless you follow that link and don't like them. But, if it strikes a chord (ha) the lyrics are among the best you're going to find.

If you don't like, try some of the folk stuff by Springsteen. I'm sure you can find something to analyse in there. 'Devils & Dust' (the song) is about the Iraq War, and I'm sure that has a video.

Alternately Subterranean Homesick Blues. I love that song and video.

Ah, hell, wish my school had been that fun.

Hot for Teacher Van Halen
The Audience is Listening Steve Vai.
Don't know whether either of them has a music video though... you could probably find something on YouTube.

I Am The Walrus

If it weren't for number 3, I'd have said Exo Politics by Muse.

With 3 in mind, however...I have no idea. I don't think I've ever seen a music video that was particularly effective, appropriate to the song, nor have I seen one that actually adds to the song. Just my opinion, of course, but I've never seen a 'good' music video.

That said, I've always found the video to Bad Day by R.E.M. entertaining.

Yes, I contradicted myself a little. Okay, so I've only seen one music video that adds to the entertainment video of the song.

Watch the allentown video. I thought it was pretty conveyed the point really well. Expect for that somewhat of a shower scene of some sort in it.

Dream Theater
The Glass Prison

I. REFLECTION

Cunning, Baffling, Powerful
Been beaten to a pulp
Vigorous, Irresistable
Sick and tired and laid low
Dominating, Invincible
Black-out, loss of control
Overwhelming, Unquenchable
I'm powerless, have to let go

I can't escape it
It leaves me frail and worn
Can no longer take it
Senses tattered and torn

Hopeless surrender
Obsession's got me beat
Losing the will to live
Admitting complete defeat

Fatal Descent
Spinning around
I've gone too far
To turn back round

Desperate attempt
Stop the progression
At any length
Lift this obsession

Crawling to my glass prison
A place where no one knows
My secret lonely world begins

So much safer here
A place where I can go
To forget about my daily sins

Life here in my glass prison
A place I once called home
Fall in nocturnal bliss again

Chasing a long lost friend
I no longer can control
Just waiting for this hopelessness to end

II. RESTORATION

Run - fast from the wreckage of the past
A shattered glass prison wall behind me
Fight - past walking through the ashes
A distant oasis before me

Cry - desperate crawling on my knees
Begging God to please stop the insanity
Help me - I'm trying to believe
Stop wallowing in my self pity

"We've been waiting for you my friend
The writing's been on the wall
All it takes is a little faith
You know you're the same as us all"

Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone
Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own
Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone

Enter the door
Desperate
Fighting no more
Help me restore
To my sanity
At this temple of hope

I need to learn
Teach me how
Sorrow to burn
Help me return
To humanity
I'll be fearless and thorough
To enter this temple of hope

Believe
Transcend the pain
Living the life
Humility
Opened my eyes
This new odyssey
Of rigorous honesty

Serenity
That I never knew
Soundness of mind
Helped me to find
Courage to change
All the things that I can

"We'll help you perform this miracle
But you must set your past free
You dug the hole, but you can't bury your soul
Open your mind and you'll see"

Help me - I can't break out this prison all alone
Save me - I'm drowning and I'm hopeless on my own
Heal me - I can't restore my sanity alone

III. REVELATION

Way off in the distance I saw a door
I tried to open
I tried forcing with all of my will but still
The door wouldn't open

Unable to trust in my faith
I turned and walked away
I looked around, felt a chill in the air
Took my will and turned it over

The glass prison which once held me is gone
A long lost fortress
Armed only with liberty
And the key of my willingness

Fell down on my knees and prayed
"Thy will be done"
I turned around, saw a light shining through
The door was wide open

Pretty solid recap of 1950-1990/2000(i forget exactly) is We Didn't Light The Fire-Billy Joel. Then you can challenge everyone to a contest on who can write down the most items in the song. (did it in calss, was really hilarious what some people got). Music video is amazing and classroom safe.

Another is That's Life, sung by Frank Sinatra. Most def doesn't have a video (too old), but the lyrics are really solidly inspirational. Except the last line.

And anything in english by josh groban. He's just awesome. Dunno about music videos for any of them, haven't checked, but any of his lyrics are decent, deep, and meaningful.

call me eccentric.

My taste for music is rather slimming, and peaceful. I have the perfect song for you that in my opinion will sell out all the rest. The song that I have for you does indeed have a great music video with it, and the song itself is quite magnificent. I know that when you start listening to it you will want to turn it off, but please I beg of you to just give it a try and see if you like it. I am going to stop rambling, and so without further ado I present to you Vitas - Lucia Di Lammermoorr (il dolce suono)

Enjoy!
P.S. - Tell me what you think about it!
