I think Adventure and DX were pretty good. Heroes was playable but not much else

Not really, I think the Adventure games (DX/Battle) worked damn well, just need to drop the gimmicks. Treasure hunting/mechs in Battle, which led to tag teams in Heroes, Guns in Shadow, Wereho-you get the point. Can the tacky USP's and we'd have a good Sonic game...hard as it is to believe.

You don't honestly think the reason the 3D games have been terrible is because Sonic's too fast, right?

Right?

The terrible platforming sections, the horrific voice acting, the underdeveloped characters, the gimmicks, and the fact that it is clearly for children don't quite fit into the 'this game is not good-like' equation?

srsly?

Sonic Adventure = Sonic DX

Sonic Adventure 2 = Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Everything since = Not worth the port.

The Sammy takeover ruined Sonic. (Sonic Heroes)
But I still like them. Except Sonic 06 and Heroes.

Ironically, in the old Sonic games he was never actually all that fast.

What Sonic used to be about was momentum, you didn't run fast, but what speed you had you retained by using your attacks cannily and the level design supporting you in staying on the move.

There was also a good deal of technical platforming in there, especially if you wanted to get all the shiny things, but that's been rendered impossible by the 3D sonic games catering to the "lolgofaster" crowd, they don't have the attention span to do platforming, so they get the shitty sonic games they deserve.

OKay, that obviously factors into the sucking of current Sonic games. For me, everything past sonic 2 has sucked. For me the WHOLE point of sonic is to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, with a one hit kill on every villain accept Dr. Robotnic, that takes 8 hits. they have been getting two complex and mazy.

Truly, Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were great. Everything after that: absolute crap.

And like others have said, speed isn't the only thing that made the old Sonic games great. Excellent level design, a great soundtrack, overall fun gameplay, and no annoying gimmicks were what made the originals awesome in my opinion. Hell, as long as a new Sonic game nailed those four factors, I could truly care less about how fast he goes.

I mean, Sonic Unleashed nailed the speed factor, yet it still sucked, and that's enough evidence for me to say that how fast Sonic runs isn't a factor in what makes a good Sonic game.

i'm not going ONLY on his speed. YES all those elements are what made it awesome. and yes all the other gimmic etc are what screws it up?!

I think the voice acting and characters definitely add to it. But I DO think that sonic's speed has made it difficult for him to transition to 3D. If you'll remember, Mario had to be practically reinvented in Super Mario 64, and I can't see Sonic as ever having gone through that "scrap it all" sort of redesigning.

My idea for a Sonic game would probably have him move at the normal platformer character speed, and for sections where he needs to go fast, treat it like one of those low-G racing games.

I'd agree, although didn't care for DX. Sonic's face was oddly loose.

I hope your next topic has a little more discussion, rather than trying to spur a flame war.

Oh for the love of sane Gamers...

NO. MODERN SONIC HAS NOT MISSED THE POINT. MODERN SONIC IS NOT SHIT. NOW PLEASE GO BACK TO YOUR HOLES AND STOP SPEWING THE BULLSHIT YOU READ ON IGN.
QFT. Yes, some of the games messed up a bit, but it's not as bad as people like to make it out to be. Not every game after Sonic 3 was completely BS horrible.

I hadn't played a sonic game since the mega drive until I got my Wii, and while they weren't great (secret rings and unleashed), I thought a lot of the speed sections were done very well - it was probably the gimmicks that put me off mainly.

Having said that, I've played throught the Mega drive sonics countless times, but if you asked me why I like them I couldn't give you straight answer. My point is that it doesn't surprise me that sega is having difficulty making another good sonic game. How can they knw what I like about sonic when I'm not really sure what I like about it? As such, I'm willing to give them another chance to impress me (again)

Wow, actually I did have another sonic game (Shadow for PS2). I must have a mental block from the trauma lol. Actually, despite the fact it was pretty much universally slated I didn't think it was that bad (I think I'm just too easy to please).

Maybe the games suck due to the fact that he's an old school character that has no deep motivation, explanation, or compelling reason. He just runs fast. It used to be that running fast was enogth to sell a game, it isn't anymore. Other old school characters who lived *cough*Mario*cough* either fleshed out and became more then just a cardboard thin avatar or expanded and improved on their gameplay enough that that alone made the games good. Sonic didn't make it's gameplay good enough to pull the games along. Perhaps running fast is just not enough. Run little hedgehog... run.
