Oh, us gamers and our nit-pickiness never ceases to amaze me.

Seriously, one slight detail wrong these days sparks boycott and whatever else. Um, you know, if you don't like the concept, how about, you know, not buying the game? I heard that helps. But a mass purchase of Sonic 1 will solve NOTHING.
Sure it will. It will give Sega more money to work on Sonic 4.
Er.. if they buy Sonic 1 the day Sonic 4 comes out, that isn't putting a lot into Sonic 4 development costs, given that its episodic nature will require it to have the same graphics and engine across the boards, so even the money from Sonic 1 won't be able to fix Sonic 4 when that game has already shipped.

That's like saying we're going to donate to the Sinking Boat Repair Foundation after the damn thing's set sail with a gaping hole in it, when it's too late to do anything to help it.

Also, someone needs to tell them that Sega's only publishing the game; they're not actually the ones developing it. If they've really got an issue, they should be taking it up with Dimps.
Dimps is doing it? And these people are complaining?

I'm sorry, the Rush and Advance games were at their worst moments still decent, and at their best some of the best games in the blue blur's line-up, 2D or otherwise. They treat the franchise better than Sonic Team proper!

Have some faith, silly petition people, and quit saying what Sonic fans want like we all want the same thing. .-.

First of all, I agree with the general consensus: Don't boycott based on the first few seconds. That's a bit...premature.

However, I do see what they're trying to do here. By simply buying an older game, they're symbolically showing that they are willing to purchase Sega products IF they remove all the recent gimmicks from the Sonic games, which, as evidenced by recent games, the gimmicks make things suck.

The money they'll get from downloaded or even (if they still make them) physical copies of Sonic 1 will not cover the money lost from a potential ~1100 copies of a next-gen (why do we still call it next-gen, btw?), so they're not filling the coffers-they're still losing money.

The problem isn't always the gimmicks, really. The werehog bits in Unleashed may not have floated most peoples' boats, but I didn't find anything about it particularly offensive, especially on the next-gen version everyone complained about. The Wii one was a waggle-fest where each day stage was five minutes followed by sometimes an hour or more of the werehog levels, where as the PS3/360 version at least struck some balance and made the day stages more than running forward with the occassional power slide or hop thrown in.

Then again, I never really got that into the Sonic games until the Adventure series. Always liked them, but didn't go out of my way to get my hands on them. I'm still left with the opinion, though, that a large bulk of the Sonic's fanbase seems stuck on saying they still adore the franchise, but only when it does exactly what they want, which seems to be the day stages on Wii's Unleashed that bored the crap out of me. The 2D Sonics are all well and good, but these people gripe about the Rush games, even, so I really don't think they want Sonic anymore, they want something where they can just go completely unhindered in pressing the forward button. I know there are people who could blaze through the original sonic games pretty much just doing that, but I was never one of them and actually feel that the old games are a much slower affair than anything that's come out in the series for the last decade. :/ At least in 3D you can see the walls coming from more than half a screen away...

"true successor to sonic 1/2"? So Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles weren't? A lot of Sonic fans would say those are the best ones, and I would still say that Sonic & Knuckles is still one of the best platformer to date, next to games like James Pond III and Donald Duck in Maui Mallard (Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow for you Americans).

I may be subjective though, as those are the games I grew up with. James Pond III was my first game, Sonic & Knuckles my third, and I know them like my pockets. But to be honest, I still enjoy them not solely for the nostalgia, but for the superb gameplay and music. Still, I can somewhat understand the Sonic fans' sentiment. I would like a charming 2D look as well, but there's nothing that says Sonic 4 will suck just because it looks a bit... commercial.

Can't say I can protest to them buying the old games though... go you, I guess. Heh.

*facepalms*

These are the idiots that I have to deal with...

Yes, that's a Sega logo for my avatar. Yes, I am a long-time fan and support of the company. But THESE morons... are the reason why logical, sensible fans like myself often go unheard.

Fucking... AHHH!! I don't even want to call them fanboys, they're just stupid! Get over it! You're not going to get a 2D Sonic game, you fucks! They can't sell that to a major audience! You're the only fuckers that'll buy it! They can't recoup development costs on you!

If you really, REALLY want to deliver your input to the company, go and sign up on their forums and post a LOGICAL, WELL WRITTEN, and WELL THOUGHT OUT message to them. Yes, they DO read their forums. If you don't get an answer, keep trying. If more Sega fans shoot you down and put you back in your place then YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.

I don't know if you noticed this, but all of you 20-somethings that are bitching about having old-fashioned Sonic games ARE NOT THE TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC HERE. Remember when you were six and you got a Genesis with Sonic 1 for a gift? Guess what... who do you think is asking for these games at Christmas time now? The kiddies want Sonic and the Black Knight... or Sonic Colors when that comes out. It's flashy, it catches their eye, and their parents will cough up the dough.

Basically, Sonic 4 is to placate you whiny motherfuckers in an attempt to save face and go on with business as usual, making money from the easiest audience to sell it to: children.
