I'm sure this thread is asking for trouble but which does everyone like better? Sonic or Mario. I was a sonic man up until sonic heroes...then I reverted to Mario. Needless to say, they are both amazing. Mario Kart Wii Rocks. Sonic trumps it for me for the earlier stuff, but the later stuff goes to Mario (except sonic generations)

What you you guys think?

With Sonic Heroes being my third favorite game of all time I am easily going to say Sonic.
Because Sonic games are more fun.

I used to play both depending on which friend I visited.
And it's quite simple, Mario is by far superior in mechanics while Sonic had a visual feast that trumped them all.

Sonic. Easily.
I know people say Sonic 06 "killed him" but those same people forget that Colours, Generations and Unleashed exist.
Mario games follow the same formula, same story (most of the time) and the same sort of gameplay, which is dull a lot of the time.
But hey, that's just me.

Thwa, that's a tough one.

I've enjoyed more Mario games, especially if we're including the RPG's as well. However, I reckon Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 beat any side scrolling Mario game, and Sonic Adventure & SA2 I found generally more entertaining than all the 3D Mario games. No, the graphics don't bother me.

I can't pick one. Metroid beats them all.

I tend to gravitate towards Sonic more, if we're discussing gameplay and fun-factor. As for characters, I can't really choose one over the other. Both are iconic.

Spyro is the only correct answer.

BUUUUUUUT if I had to choose between Mario and Sonic, probably Sonic. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle consumed quite a bit of my childhood back in the day.

I'm a mario man myself. I find platforming games a lot easier to control. Not to mention the tons of awesome spin-offs there are (the RPGs, Mario Kart, etc.)

Sega does, what Nintendon't.

That's to say Nintendo doesn't make licensed Mario games that are complete garbage. Thus, Mario wins.

I grew up on Mario, never owned a Sonic game and frankly I was never interested to do so. So, Mario all the way.

Mario for me.First game I owned was the first SMB game on NES and I never looked back from there.Sonic..I don't know.I wouldn't say they're bad games(apart from the obvious bad ones)but I just never saw the appeal

That said, Lost Worlds looks absolutely phenomenal.
I must say it's the first Sonic game since the Bioware rpg on DS that has actually piqued my interest

Much more interesting to look at than Mario. And you may criticize the games but at least they are dong something new where as Mario isnt.

There never was any Sonic vs Mario-war in my childhood. I had Nintendo consoles, so I played Mario games. Until Sonic Adventure 2, which I enjoyed a lot. I hadn't played Sonic-games. I have gone back to the 'classic' Sonic-games, but while I enjoyed them, I preferred Mario. I can still go back to Super Mario Bros 3 and enjoy it, but it's partly because of nostalgia.

Mario games have more to offer. I always felt like Sonic was a one trick pony. He does that trick really well. He runs fast, that's about it. There is some really good level design there, some kick ass music. I always feel like I am going on an adventure with Mario. Sonic games feel like a really good hot dog with some yummy chips on the side. Mario games feel like a really good steak dinner with an expensive beverage to wash it down with.

Just because a character still retains some of his classic moves, doesn't mean they haven't tried anything different. This is the most bullshit thing when it comes to Mario games.

Mario 64. It's the first 3D Mario game, so of course it is vastly different. This is where the people usually begin their rant.

Super Mario Sunshine. They gave Mario a water pack. He know has new moves and it makes it play quite differently than Mario 64.

Super Mario Galaxy. If you think this game plays like all the others, then how much booze did you drink. Mario Galaxy added whole bunch of kick ass gravity mechanics and new ways to look at stuff.

Just because Mario is always going to be about platforming for the most part, doesn't mean they haven't tried to keep it fresh.

Samus? no? fine ....

between those two Sonic I guess. purely cause I still go back and play Sonic 3 & Knuckles now an then, can't really say there's a Mario game I go back to, 3? I guess? But I don't remember the last time I played that is.

Metriod trumps both those bitches though, beaten 2, 3 and 4 more times then Sonic and Mario games put together

Mario has had some breakthroughs but its mostly the same shit year after year, there's also a huge time gap between each one. Sonic games are usually rather different from their predecessors.

You say Sonic is unsophisticated then hold up Mario as a classy beverage.... he's a fat Italian plumber incapable of speech aside from high pitched squeals. Sonic has an established character and his own living breathing world, the mushroom kingdom doesnt have half Mobius' depth. Also not only is Sonic a developed character but he has a whole woodland entourage of woodland creatures who are also possessed of a personality. Mario has his equally monosyllabic brother, whatever the hell toad is and the annoying braindead Peach who is the reason Anita Sarkiesian is angry.

When have you ever felt motivated to save Peach other than when you think "well this is what Mario does". Sonic is out to save his friends and the world they inhabit and have fun along the way. I have no idea why Mario continues his perpetual battle with the reptilian princess thief, he doesnt give away any emotions he just mindlessly repeats.

I'm going to have to go with Sonic. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is one of my all time favorite games.

That's not to say I don't like Mario... I especially sunk a big amount of time into New Super Mario Bros. on the DS.

I just prefer the story and characters of Sonic to Mario.
