Mario all the way! Not only does he have a bunch of amazing platformers under his belt, but he has several amazing RPG games, a great series of Kart games, Mario Party, and a bunch of sports games(although I don't have much love for those.)

Sonic has several great games, but for me the Mario Galaxy games alone rocket Mario far ahead of Sonic.

Sonic.

My first game for the Gamecube was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and I instantly fell in love with the little blue blur.
Then that calmed down and I fell back in love when I downloaded some Sonic games on my PS3.

Mario has had some breakthroughs but its mostly the same shit year after year, there's also a huge time gap between each one. Sonic games are usually rather different from their predecessors.

You say Sonic is unsophisticated then hold up Mario as a classy beverage.... he's a fat Italian plumber incapable of speech aside from high pitched squeals. Sonic has an established character and his own living breathing world, the mushroom kingdom doesnt have half Mobius' depth. Also not only is Sonic a developed character but he has a whole woodland entourage of woodland creatures who are also possessed of a personality. Mario has his equally monosyllabic brother, whatever the hell toad is and the annoying braindead Peach who is the reason Anita Sarkiesian is angry.

When have you ever felt motivated to save Peach other than when you think "well this is what Mario does". Sonic is out to save his friends and the world they inhabit and have fun along the way. I have no idea why Mario continues his perpetual battle with the reptilian princess thief, he doesnt give away any emotions he just mindlessly repeats.[/quote]

How the characters look has nothing to do with anything. They both look good. Whats this bullshit about living breathing world. You mean different stages for Sonic to run around in. Just like Mario has castles, grass lands, deserts. Most of Sonic's friends are just dead weight anyways. Nobody gives a shit about them. There is no difference between saving a princess, as opposed to saving some animal buddies. Sonic is the one that hasn't really changed at all. In fact they went back to putting him in 2D. If that is your idea of a radical break through, then so be it.

I'm going to have to go with Sonic myself, despite liking both characters. While I like Mario, I've never really felt as captivated by a Mario game since Super Mario RPG introduced a fantastic world and characters both menacing and adorable. After that, Mario decided to pander to a younger and younger audience, defanging their enemies to the point where it's impossible to take them seriously. The last time I felt any kind of awe or agency fighting a Mario boss was the rock monster in Galaxy. Also, other enemies from previous games tend to get swept under the rug (Smithy, Crackletta, etc.) and never seen again, robbing the games of any kind of continuity.

Sonic, for his many missteps, has a wide variety of enemies and monsters to handle. Despite struggling with continuity issues that Mario did (disappearing enemies and vague timelines), it was very clear that they at least were attempting to have a linking narrative. On top of that, the aesthetics for the game didn't pander to just the youngest of children, but attempted to be more complex in some games. I think that if Sonic Team could write to save their lives, they would've had something interesting to work with.

Well apart from 2003-2009 I'd say Sonic. But christ what a crap 6 years Sonic had. I still remember my disappointment with Sonic Heroes.

I've only ever played Sonic games, so I'll say in a somewhat biased way that Sonic is better. All I really need to say as proof is Sonic Colours, and every soundtrack from the series ever.

And plus, I like how he's been an imperfect character from the start. Anyone can make a golden protagonist hero character like Mario, but it takes guts to make your mascot an egotistical braggart. It even describes him as such in the manual for Sonic 1. He's refreshing that way.

I thought versus threads weren't allowed here? Eh oh well.

Anyway, I grew up with Sonic and Sega consoles so my answer is quite obvious. The first Mario game I ever played was Sunshine and the first Nintendo home console I had was the GameCube. I had a GameBoy Color before that, but that was mainly a Pokemon Red and Crystal machine for me. Hell I even had a Game Gear of all things. Now when yeah Sonic had a rough couple of years, but to be honest I didn't mind Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, I quite like Unleashed, and some of the Rider games were fun. Doesn't excuse 06 in the slightest, but hey that one's fun to play from time to time to see the bad decisions made.
For me I'm one of those rare Sonic fans that loves every Sonic game at least a little bit. I started off on the Genesis/Megadrive with Sonic 2, it being my first video game I ever played and owned, and I had every Sonic game on the Megadrive, except CD because I didn't have the 32X attachment for it.
