Considering Sonic Team actually thought it was a good idea to give Sonic a sword, turn him into a werewolf, and then dump even more unnecessary characters into the franchise, I think we can safely say that if Sonic wants to ever live again (and at this point, he's probably wishing he'd died with Dreamcast) then he's got to go to other hands.
Not going to buy anything Sonic anymore, though, even if it is good. He's had his chance waaaay too many times, and every time has been nothing but evidence of how little Sonic Team apparently cares about their mascot's roots. It's just sad.

Does it even matter. People are still going to ***** & say it's hitler's offspawn, that it ruined sonic, and all the other shit they keep saying. By the way I'm not talking about Escapist's here I mean IGN, Gamespot and all those other bias pricks, as well as those "people" who call themselves sonic fans when they never give any of the games a chance to prove themselves.
Whether or not Sonic Team will be part of the development of Sonic 4 doesn't matter to me, as long as it will hopefully be a good game after all the bad luck the Hedgehog has gotten in the past few years.
Having Sonic as the only character is good I suppose. Sort of like going back to his roots I guess. I don't think it would of been a bad idea to include Tails and Knuckles as long as they had their AI fixed in they'd make team ups. Shadow would also probably be ok as long as they left out the guns he was given in his own game.
To be truthful, if Sonic were to ever have another game that involved having a big roster of other characters to be playable in it than just himself, I'd perfer it to be then based on the archie comic series and made into an rpg like Sonic Chronicles.

Well it's been clear for quite some time now that Sonic Team no longer wants to work on Sonic games.
This is great news... I just wish Sonic 4 was coming out in it's entirety on a GAME DISC... preferably with some retro black and gray "Genesis" grid border graphics around the cover.
I'm sure they'll do it several months after all the episodes are released... I'll probably hold out for that. That way I can set it line next to my original Genesis games and feel bad for geeking out over it. :3
Let's just keep in mind that when this is out and being awesome, and Sonic Team releases the next gimmicky 3D gameplay Sonic game... we ignore that one and consider it non-canon.

So, in the practice of Carlin-esque cynicism; I have a message for sonic fans tentatively waiting for this title;
He's dead folks, He's very dead. It's been "Weekend At Bernie's" for years now. You guys complain and cry every time a new game comes out, and now you guys are crying because his eyes are no longer dilated-black but a nice green? You people don't know what you want, you want another sonic game, but you want it to be Sonic 2? That style of game is dead, and sonic sunk with it. The only reason Mario is still being sold is that their fans aren't finicky, confused lemmings.

I'm still questioning this game's potential to be good. I actually like some of the other characters in the Sonic games (mostly just Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow).
Also, it looks TOO much like Sonic advance and so on. I would rather they take the idea of the 2D parts from Sonic Unleashed and make levels based off those parts alone and cut out the rest of the Sonic Unleashed game.
