Sony Exec Admits He was Banned From MiiVerse for Promoting PlayStation

In a chat with PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has revealed that he's been banned from Nintendo's MiiVerse twice, and admits working with Ken Kutaragi was "incredibly difficult."

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is known to be a gamer of all platforms and not just those made by Sony's PlayStation division. This fact is not only evident if you follow Yoshida on Twitter [https://twitter.com/yosp], but the Sony exec even owns two units of every console so he can play Japanese and US games. Speaking to PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny over the weekend where he detailed his career in the gaming industry, Yoshida admits he has already been banned from Nintendo's MiiVerse social network twice.

The first time was because I had my Twitter account in my profile and that's against the rules...The second time is because I wrote, 'I love PS.' You're not supposed to promote a commercial product in MiiVerse, so they correctly interpreted 'PS' as 'PlayStation.'

In the same chat, Yoshida also talked about his time working with the "Father of PlayStation," Ken Kutaragi. "Working with Kutaragi was incredibly difficult," claims Yoshida, since Kutaragi could do an immediate 180 in terms of what he wanted. "Every week his direction and instructions could change," Yoshida states.

However, even if Kutaragi was hard to work with, the former PlayStation head noticed Yoshida's work and complimented him twice -- which was an odd occurrence since Kutaragi was known to "struggle" in giving compliments to co-workers. "I was complimented by Ken twice!" says Yoshida and adds, "When I say this to my colleagues, they say 'twice? That's a lot!" This is a stark contrast to Yoshida who gives compliments more freely and mentions, "For me, giving a complement is free, it's like a smile from McDonald's...But still, we all love Ken."

If you want to get in touch with Yoshida directly, try reaching him over on Twitter [https://twitter.com/yosp] where he responds to PlayStation fans even during his personal time and mostly gives honest answers instead of canned ones provided by Sony's PR department.

Do any of you remember Kutaragi? While highly improbable, how would you feel if the former father of the PlayStation brand came back?

Hah.

In defence of the Miiverse it is very well moderated, they tend to deal with bullshit quickly and effectively, and it does make it a nicer place to be when all the trolls are nuked from orbit.

That's kinda funny.

Though it might've been even better if he'd been banned twice for calling people "pussy fags" on the NSMBU forums or something.

For those who will inevitably rush to bash Nintendo for this, or claim "First Amendment!!1!!!11" on it:

This is the digital equivalent of standing in the lobby of your competitor's company and boasting aloud about your love for your own brand, how it's better than your competitor's, and trying to convince people to go to your store instead. It is not "unfair" for the competitor to ask you to leave or to have you escorted off the premises as a trespasser.
Aren't we overly defensive today :D ?

On a more on topic note; good to see that they have some decent moderation over on wii-verse.

I was never going to bash nintendo, I was just giggling about the whole situation.

I just find it comical, Yoshida truly is a great boss and leader, he shows himself human almost every other day, He can poke fun at himself and his brand as well as others, and he has a real passion for gaming. What more could you ask for in the position he is in?

Heheh, that's pretty cute. I like to imagine all of the execs occasionally annoy each other over their respective consoles, it'd be a lot funnier then the normal console war bickering we see all the time.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they meet every week for drinks, along with the top execs of the major publishers, and tell each other stories of how they're going to screw their customers next. Kind of like the MOD Squad in the movie Thank You For Smoking.

What if you're just a fan of both? I think they were monitoring his account closely because they knew who he is. If they would ban anyone for saying they love another product then that's bullshit.

As far as hardware design goes, Kutaragi was the worst. I'm glad he's out of the picture there.

Lol. I like how his promotion was simply "I love PS" and posting his Twitter. A little extreme to ban him but it's Nintendo's service after all

Well no it isn't, it's more like wearing a shirt promoting another company while reading in the lobby. You're not intruding on anyone else, they have to observe you to see your company promotion, and it isn't an attempt at conversion. Still completely understand why they would ban for that though. Also, it's not a company's job to uphold freedom of speech in their own services.

One slight issue with the story, the post is actually still there.

https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYMHAAABAADOUKlPwCZ9Cw

Likely it was reported (and thus taken down) until it could be moderated, but they left it up.

Banned twice implies temp bans as well, so might gave been a ban due to a lot or reports or something, if it was a actual proper ban wouldn't make sense that the post that caused it would still be live!

This is true, freedom of speech is not something you have in a private business/location. Hell you don't have full freedom of speech on this forum, there are limitations on what you can say (no hate speech etc) and this is accepted

He did get a little crazy at the end, no? But his footprint in video games can't be dismissed. He did make the PS1 and PS2 a success. And if you think how he usurped Nintendo from its throne, well, that's no small feat. :)

Well, it kind of makes sense that to have in their conduct code not to promote commercial products. Only Nintendo products would make sense to promote because you're using one, so talking about how much you love Mario would only come natural while you were playing the game. Talking about how you love PlayStation just out of nowhere is uncalled for, and so it's clearly meant for promotional reasons, and not just expressing love for it. It's like going in an apple store and just shouting "I love Android!" You're not doing it because you like Android, you're doing it either to promote it, or start some shit. Either way, it's just not cool to do.

Well, they didn't call him "Crazy Ken" for nothing.

OT: I find this kind of endearing in a way. I don't know, just the thought of an executive sitting there with a control in his hands typing 'I love PS.' Just puts a smile on my face.
