Ok. This article is pretty wrong. These names and info have nothing to do with the recent Sony hack, they were contest entries from back in 2001. As Devil says, there really isn't any effort involved besides finding the link (they've been posted online for several years). Pretty much the only relation this has to the recent hacks is that Sony only noticed this as they were trying to evaluate their network as a result of the recent hacks.

This isn't a "warning shot" or anything else. Simply a repository of personal information that someone forgot about at some point, which Sony has now fessed up to and shut off (as it should have 10 years ago)

Wait, so if they do more I can find out where my friends live through their accounts and go to them for some lag free fun? Nah, I want them to keep their anonymity and I can't afford gas.
But what they have is the equivalent to a school directory short of phone numbers THAT IS 10 YEARS OLD. All that information is considered invalid now. Huh...At least I didn't hit the panic button.

I've got some good news and some bad news. Here's the bad news: The hackers that were probably behind the attacks on the Sony Online Entertainment [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109568-Sony-Admits-Private-PSN-Info-Has-Been-Stolen-All-Of-It] recently published a horde of stolen personal information online. The good news: It was evidently something that anyone could just look up in a phonebook.
And we know that these where posted by hacker because?

Names and addresses are easy to obtain even for those of us that don't have the ability to maneuver through a firewall using a kernel vulnerability.
*claps* Mad hacking skills indeed.

I don't understand the hackers' inclination to fuck over a bunch of people who haven't done anything to them.
They're trolls. Emotional responses are what they're after. Same deal as the terrorists. The more "outrage" they get, the happier they are.

If none of this information was of any use, then it sounds to me like they're just blowing smoke. Probably trying to scare the public even more about this hack attack on PSN

Pretty sure I'm safe here. Still, what is the purpose here? To be jerks? Congratulations! I already thought the hackers were jerks! No need to do anything else guys.

So, we are 100% sure that the hackers did this? Any evidence? They haven't been very vocal about anything. We're basically taking Sony's word for this. Not saying its a lie. I'm much more willing to believe that the hackers posted this than not. Just being cautious. Could always be an old bit of information that Sony just forgot about. Or it could be intended to mock Sony.

What do the hackers truly "gain" by doing this to people?
Id imagine it is to show that when they got personal data, they got stuff from way back in 2001. If a lot of people are hurt and scared from having a PS3, how many people fall in the group of, "May have given information to Sony in the past decade". I don't have any information on my friends PS3, but did I ever give data to Sony, through an MMO, a trial, or something similar? I'm not so sure.

Look, 2 free games is not enough.
I want blood. Blood of those hackers. Garbage in human form, fit only to be exterminated.

I just hope they read this and realise that most of the people in the world hate them for ruining gamers reputations.

I think I can safely say trollolololololololololololololololololololololol. What else can I say? Everyone on this site and indeed millions of PSN network users got all worked up over 2500 decade old sweepstakes entries. Of course, the hackers told us it was millions of credit card numbers. I guess I can say that this was the best and most successful troll I've ever seen in my life.

I really don't like to keep sounding like the endless skeptic but..

Are we really sure such generally useless and out of date information came from the same hack as put PSN out of commission?

This is seeming more and more like when one nutjob with a bomb strapped to him blows up a bus and sixty different organizations try to claim responsibility for it. .. Only, y'know, without the responsibility claiming.

Still, I guess.. reasons the 'real' hackers might have done it:
Advertising to people might want to buy useful info that they actually have something (not very effective)
Trying to make people think they haven't got much, and thus not bother closing credit cards
Um.. no 'guess that's about it. Kinda weak.
