Standard business practice. If they are going to shut down for a while, it's usual for businesses to use employees holiday pay to keep paying them. Employee can opt to not get paid if they want.
Yeah, I know that. Just wanted to reiterate that part though.

Nice, I like when companies can stop giving a shit about just money.
This is great idea indeed and I like it. But it can have some downsides on long run. Japan hass tog et their economy and trade going so money start flowing in and out of Japan again. Otherwise they might settle in to economic depression and financial crisis in general, which is bad for a nation that is trying to rebuild it's infrastructure. But I am sure Japanese people are going to come up with some solution on the financial perspective, tax cutting, crediting, benefits, etc... I myself don't know how the Japanese financial system works, but I am sure they'll figure something out - They ain't stupid, that is for sure.

WTF???

Moving holidays and resheduling? If their country is in such a bad fucking state then they should close their ass altogether, it's only an entertainment company after all they're not indispensible for a few months... and while they're at it, seeing as they have more money than god give EVERYONE a PAID holiday.
Yeah, let them close, that means even less money that will be going to aid Japan. It may only be an entertainment company but it is a juggernaut in the industry and closing it down all together would only hurt more people then it would do good.

I'd rather see the Sony workers actually working, to me, when I was working it helped me get my mind of some bad situations (of course nothing on the serious scale of what happened in Japan) but at least these people still have some place to go to work to try and rebuild their country.

I'd rather them donate to the relief fund / clean up rather then just toss their employees out on a paid holiday. There will always be exceptions and each employee should be taken into consideration if they actually do need / want time off.

Sony is doing the right thing in this case by shutting down when they need to in compliance with the Japanese governments regulations while also still giving their employees someplace to work.

Yeesh, people in this thread have a HORRIFIC hatred for Sony, I see.

Good to know all that fan bias is still stirring.

However, despite previous comments from Sony that the Tohoku Earthquake would not delay its new NGP [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109052-Sony-Backpedals-on-NGP-Quake-Delay-Fears], it's hard to envision a situation where a two-week shutdown wouldn't stall the NGP launch - if only for a couple of weeks.
I think that this is such a minor question at this point that it shouldn't even be asked at all. Even on a video game website.

" it's hard to envision a situation where a two-week shutdown wouldn't stall the NGP launch - if only for a couple of weeks."

Actually, you start off with this: "Sony's Japan offices... "
So we're talking about *offices*, which are not production facilities where they build NGPs.
Those might (partially) even be located in China.
