I agree with you guys, hacking the PS3 is like buying a Laptop with Windows Vista installed and deciding instead you want to run Linux.

How dare they.

It's not like Sony at times advertised it as a console you could use your own operating system on is it?
Nice sarcasm, but sadly it's wasted here. This device ONLY allows for people to pirate games. It doesn't allow homebrew or anything nifty like that. It is for an illegal purpose only.

I agree that it was a dick move by Sony to remove the "Install Other OS" support from old PS3s, but in this case, they're going after a device which allows only for piracy. And in this instance, I say go for it. If you can't afford to buy the games you shouldn't get to play them. You don't need games to survive, it's not like stealing food so you don't starve to death.

I love how most of you assume that all hackers are malicious bastards with a twirly mustache.

Meh, not too joyous with lawsuits flying everywhere, but I'm sick of piracy. Let them suffer the legal system. It's about time.

Go Sony.

Hackers are really the lowest of the low, even by gamer standards. Grind them into the dirt, Sony.
I agree 100%
I second this.

There is hackers and hackers, my iPhail have been jailbroken since the day I got it, its worthless to me otherwise. Got homebrew on my Wii and copied all the games I own to a HDD so I don't have to switch disks all the time.

When I'm playing CS or something like that I usually go uberrage when hackers are fucking around.

I really don't like hackers and I won't hack my PSP, or my PS3 because I want the makers of the games I enjoy to receive the money they deserve. Now I do have something to say about the pricing of games though. They are for the most part way too expensive. I'm here right now in Russia on a semester abroad from my beloved Canada, and new PS3 games here are $100+!!! They're 40 dollars less in Canada! PSP games here are also way more, like older games that are 9.99 on the North American Playstation Store are still three times as much here, new release PSP games here are also way more, 55-60 dollars, when they're only 40 back home. Hell some new games in the UK are way cheaper than that even right now on Amazon.uk Birth By Sleep is 24 dollars, and in Canada it's still 40, while you can't even find it here.

Bottom line is, both sides need to change. But if you bring the price down, piracy will go down, like with movies (the most expensive new release I've seen here legally is 10 dollars, they're at least twice that in NA, that's a rip off).

I....third?....this. I can't stand hackers, nor pirates (and doesn't it break the system so you can play pirated games?).
The are various reasons to jailbreak your system, like removing region locks, the absolute worst thing console developers ever implemented. Everyone who "hacks" his system for that purpose only has my full support.
But let's face it, for most people it's just to play pirated games.

I was really starting to get annoyed at the people supporting sony here, but you've just clarified the situation.
Thanks.

I like homebrew, even though I've never tried to run any on a console. (Though I do routinely use console game controllers on my PC), but if the device's sole purpose is to allow the playing of pirated games...
Well, that's something entirely different.

I don't like the precedent this kind of stuff sets though, but whatever.
I'm not one to blindly agree with laws, and I find copyright to be increasingly abusive.

Even so, while I once pirated stuff, I've long since realised that it's not worth it.
Even without money, It's just not worth ripping off someone else's work.

(Not that there aren't still temptations; Old software that is almost impossible to get hold of through legal means... Really expensive professional content creation software that no normal person can afford unless they need it for their work...
But even with those kind of temptations, it's difficult to feel justified in taking something that isn't yours.)

So yeah. Under the circumstances, I'll give Sony the benefit of the doubt here.

But really, all I can see happening in the long run with copyright laws being the way they are is some kind of massive disaster that will just be bad for everyone involved.

For some reason when I read this thread title I got a feeling of happiness, along with cheers and applause in my head. It's good to be a PS3 owner when you hear about news like these. ^_^

And though I see how this can be negative PR, I think this just prooves that Sony is protective over their system and doesn't want any hackers on it.

Going after the people who buy these tools doesn't seem like a move that will win a lot of public approval.
Pff, they have it coming, it's illegal, they are doing it, it is entirely up to them. And to be honest, they aren't actually getting fined, their just getting a slap on the wrist here.
It's still probably not a good idea. There's a difference between what you can do and what you should.

And don't get me wrong. I don't hack, pirate, or otherwise screw around with this stuff. I'm not justifying them or saying they're in the right.

But at some point, it becomes impractical to fight a battle. Legally or otherwise.

I think this is fair and I have no sympathy for people targetted by this. The reason I think it is fair is that they are making them sign an agreement never to do it again first before they take legal action against them, which pretty much ammounts to a warning. As long as people have this warning I believe that anyone penalised by this only has themselves to blame.

Hey, good on Sony. Now all they gotta do is target hackers from other countries, and we'll be set.

But those German hackers might not have the best reaction:

Don't hack!
Tell Sony to take care of their root-keys. Without which the "hack" wouldn't have been possible.
So the fact that SONY had a small hole in their system means that Hacking them suddenly should be legal? See if you'd quoted my ENTIRE POST, it wouldn't look like that's basically what you're saying.

How about despite the inevitable holes in SONY's system, you don't hack and perform illegal activity in the first place? Wouldn't that kinda just, make all this litigation stuff go away?

See what I did there?

I had great fun with the headline, which literally says that Sony found a way to threaten hackers without it being illegal. I suppose they did, at that, but in my version of the story there were infestations of flying squirrels. I don't know why.
