Go Sony.

Hackers are really the lowest of the low, even by gamer standards. Grind them into the dirt, Sony.
I agree 100%
I second this.
I....third?....this. I can't stand hackers, nor pirates (and doesn't it break the system so you can play pirated games?).
I fourth it.

I hope Sony knocks out more teeth then are left, fuck hackers.
too bloody right :D
i hate hackers they ruin everything just think of the ppl that had to take loads of other OS like linux and that just cos that twat geohottz had to do stuff the illegal way

Well atleast they give them a chance. Unlike some companies that sue peoples balls off for pirating 1 game that they couldnt afford anyways. Those guys should suck it up and sign the contract and be happy they aint gotten crazy fines.

Thumbs up to Sony tbh.

this isn't nintendo we're talking about who make millions selling dinky things like wiifit to your grandmother and all the nintendo fanboys, and its not microsoft that has its ever-growing frat boy community to support it, this is sony who hardly make any profit with any of the consoles and games they sell. and here you have hackers trying to take what little they make, so no shit they're gonna be defensive. you dont see nintendo trying to stop ds piracy, because they're perfectly content with the millions of people who dont pirate.

I see here a staggering display of short-sightedness. If I own a device, I can do whatever the hell I want with it. End of story. No ifs, buts, and maybes. So what if the device "only allows evil"? Then get the guys for pirating games, *when and if* they have pirated them. I don't know about other countries, but Germany grants the right to make personal copies of any media you own. Let's throw those bastards in the pits, right?

The next step in that course of logic is suing Bit-Torrent users, because clearly it can only be used for evil. I hear that they are training PreCogs now, so in a few years we'll finally be able to bag those vile criminals *before* they break the law.

Sorry for the heated rant, I know this will make my argument all the more unconvincing. It just makes me sick to my stomach when people don't understand that the ends don't justify the means, and especially *why* that is so.

I actually visited the site selling these things: they're not being sold as a device used for homebrew ANYTHING. They are being advertised as an instrument of piracy, pure and simple.

They got what they deserved: and it's a light punishment anyway compared with what uploaders get slapped with.

I never realized I was in such a tiny minority here. I happen to believe that when you buy a piece of hardware, you're allowed to do whatever you want with it because it's yours. When I buy a Dell computer, Dell has no right to tell me that I am not allowed to install Linux on it. Sony is selling me a piece of hardware. If I want to hack it and turn it into a super car stereo, then that's my prerogative and Sony has no right to tell me I can't.

Count me in as well, these people could have been slammed with huge fines and instead are just getting what is pretty much a slap on the wrist. Just be thankful for that and sign the bloody contract. I'm completely backing Sony on this one myself.

I love how most of you assume that all hackers are malicious bastards with a twirly mustache.
If they had a twirly moustache, I would love hackers and become one. My moustache isn't twirly :(

It is an item designed only to hack your Playstation and allow you to use pirated games, both which breaches the EULA of the PS3 software. So yes, Sony can legally do this even if it might be in the grey zone.
EULAs don't supersede local law. Sony would have to prove that the jailbreak was used to play illegal software, and that's damn-near impossible, provided the console isn't connected to the net. And technically, once you've bought the console, you can do whatever you want with it. This isn't like with software, where you have all these legal grey areas. It's hardware, and the law is pretty cut and dry about what you can do with it. If they don't prove what they were doing is legal, they *could* potentially get sued for harassment.

I'm really curious as to what the laws are regarding German mail. At least in the US (as far as I know) no company like Sony has any say or right to hold back your mail and threaten you to sign a contract with them in order to receive something that is yours.
I'm curious if this would fly in the US. If it happened to me I'd question as to how they managed to screen the hacking tools and if the box was opened/ inspected to actually confirm the contents and reported to Sony I would sue the pants off them and bring up the charges of opening my mail and stealing my property. Yes I know these are tools used for a "bad" thing, but I honestly don't see how Sony can legally do something like this. I mean it is the equivalent of person A handing money to person B, person B handing the item in exchange to person A and person C socks A and B in the mouth, takes the item, and holds it ransom.

I'd actually like the device just to have all my games on a harddrive, it was a nice feature on an old modified xbox. Just lug it to a lan and all your games are right there. Modifying to improve the user experience should be allowed yes it can be used for illegal purposes but pretty much anything can. Boo sony.

"doesn't seem like a move that will win a lot of public approval." Since when does Sony care about what people think? Let them go for it says I.

Compared to the lawsuits faced from grubby teenagers who get free music, this seems pretty lenient.

"Sign this piece of paper and we will leave you alone" is a lot nicer than suing them all individually for millions of dollars they don't have.
