I'm calling it the Gem from now on because "Sony's new-yet-unreleased motion controller wand" is too much of a mouthful.

Look Sony, ANY NAME WILL DO. Just pick one while everyone's interest in piqued.

There's nothing wrong with the name Gem, it's fine, in many ways it is better than Natal as everyone instantly knows how to pronounce it, just consider how many parents will end up asking to buy the Microsoft 'Nay-tal' rather than 'Nah-tal'?

I guess everyone has already noticed that the only outrageous thing about the controller is that it looks like a vibrator.

I fail to see how this name is Outrageous, Exciting, Avdenturous or in any other way "special".

Now if they had called it something like "Fuckstick of DOOOOOOOOOOM!" Then... maybe. I think some of these excitable analysts need to go get laid.
*ahem*

Noted.

However, Grammar Police for the Rescue! Jem =/= Gem. I has you now, Mr. Funk!

Sony Motion Controller Gets a Truly Outrageous Name

Word has slipped out that Sony's new PlayStation [http://www.playstation.com] motion controller will be called Gem, a name that industry observers around the world are saying is truly, truly, truly outrageous.

The beans were spilled by Microsoft [http://www.ea.com] have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace."

Many analysts have said the name is both exciting and adventurous, while one industry executive who wished to remain anonymous claimed it was "glamorous [and] fashionable" and could bring considerable new fame to Sony's console. "No one else is the same," he added.

Excitement over the newly-christened controller isn't entirely contagious, however; Microsoft has issued a statement affirming its commitment to the rival Natal controller, which is believes is a superior technology. "We're Microsoft!" the company said. "Our controller is better!"

Kotaku [http://www.us.playstation.com/]. "We haven't announced [the] final name at this point."

Ah well. It was truly outrageous while it lasted.

It looks more like an oversized glow-in-the-dark lolly to me than something I would swing around in my bedroom. And lets face it; they're just trying to catch up on the Wii-mote.

EDIT: Hey, I just realized I don't see any safety-straps on that thing. I'm pretty sure a few TV's are gonna get smashed sooner or later :p

If Wii can be said with a straight face, then ANY name will quickly be commonly accepted. I mean seriously, they called the thing a euphemism for urination, "Gem" shouldn't turn too many heads for long. If Gem is the final name, it won't seem that weird for long. Hell, it is a kind of odd name, but its nothing too outlandish NOW.

Uhm, "Gem" is ridiculous? Is our collective-short-term memory so bad that we forgot how stupid "Wii" sounded?

And ffs, "wiimote"? That's just "remote" with a speech impediment.
