Last I checked...

Reverse engineering was legal. But then when spreading the code, that's somehow illegal. ESPECIALLY when it's something he did with his legally owned PS3. Now he has to give his code, computer and all his files to Sony when he doesn't even live in the same state as where they filed suit.

Seriously, our laws need a cleaning out.

I reverse engineer for a living.

It depends on the application/device. Mobile phones are OK, consoles are not (in the US).

It also depends on the method used.

Usually data produced by a device, and in the owners possession, can be reverse engineered.

[General Electric came after me for reverse engineering their data formats on their locomotives, without success. Now GE refuses to work on any project I am involved in.]

The problem is the judge (in this case).

If you read her ruling you would see she has no concept of the internet.

Part of the ruling is that GeoHot ?shall retrieve? code ?which he has previously delivered or communicated.?

Clearly impossible.

After following copyright law for the last 10 years and seeing Napster taken down for "inducement", Limewire asked by the RIAA to pay 1$ billion for infringement, Whitney Harper forced to pay $27K for 34 songs, the DMCA to stop competition in various fields, it wouldn't surprise me that our judges have NO idea about how the internet operates...

Sony should just do this: prevent anyone from logging into PSN if their system is modified from the standard in any way, including a Linux install.

Then, Sony firmware should open up Linux installs for the fat PS3s that were originally shipped with that capability.

With that, I think it will only be a narrow group motivated to use a homebrew system.

Sony cannot undo the fact the PS3 was cracked, and trying to put that genie back in the bottle will be a pathetic waste of effort.
This crack is a little different. All it does is stomp down the Game OS while booting Linux over the top. The next time the system restarts without the exploit, the Linux boot image gets wiped from memory without a trace. People using custom firmware using this method, rather than Linux, are still getting banned if they play online. Offline gameplay is still free reign though.

if only that stupid geo hotz had never tried to get pirate games on their other OS use then this shit storm wouldnt be here
so just learn dont hack for free games that people put time and effort to make and dont hack to ruin games like MW2.
Find me one statement from GeoHotz where he says he did it because he CBA to pay for his games and because he wants to cheat at MW2.
no you dont get it
he made the jailbreak for the ps3 and people use the jailbroken software to hack games on mw2
Ok then, find me a statement by GeoHotz where he endorses people using his software that way.

Intentions of an inventor do not necessarily match those of the users of said inventions. Refer to the guy who found a way to reduce mining accidents and ended up with a bunch of wars with death tolls magnitudes higher then what they would have been without it.

Guys, fail0verflow cracked the PS3 first through an exploit to run OtherOS, then GeoHot took his work and cracked the METLDR so games could be pirated and played. That's why GeoHot is getting prosecuted and fail0verflow isn't. Watch the video I posted earlier. It explains everything and more.
